📚 Transport in Animals: Blood, Vessels and Heart |
All living cells need a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, while waste products like carbon dioxide must be removed quickly. In large multicellular organisms such as mammals, diffusion alone is far too slow to meet these demands. A specialised transport system – the circulatory system – has evolved to carry materials to and from every cell. The key components are blood, blood vessels and the heart. Understanding how they work together is fundamental to IGCSE Biology and helps explain many aspects of human health.
1. Why Animals Need a Transport System |
Unicellular organisms and very thin animals (e.g. flatworms) can rely on diffusion directly across their body surface because no cell is far from the external environment. However, larger animals have a low surface area to volume ratio and cells buried deep inside the body. Here, simple diffusion cannot supply enough oxygen or remove wastes rapidly enough. Thus, a mass transport system containing a pumping mechanism (the heart), a fluid medium (blood) and a network of tubes (blood vessels) is essential to maintain steep concentration gradients and deliver materials efficiently.
2. Composition and Functions of Blood |
Blood is a tissue consisting of plasma (about 55% of blood volume) and formed elements (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets). Plasma is a pale yellow liquid made up mainly of water, in which proteins, glucose, hormones, mineral ions and urea are dissolved. It transports soluble nutrients, hormones and waste products, and distributes heat around the body.
Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are specialised for oxygen transport. They are biconcave discs with no nucleus, which gives them a large surface area for gas exchange and allows them to pack in more haemoglobin. White blood cells (leucocytes) form part of the immune system: some engulf pathogens by phagocytosis, while others produce antibodies. Platelets are small cell fragments that are essential in blood clotting.
3. Red Blood Cells and Oxygen Transport |
Haemoglobin, the red pigment inside erythrocytes, binds reversibly with oxygen in the lungs to form oxyhaemoglobin. When blood reaches respiring tissues, the lower oxygen concentration causes oxyhaemoglobin to dissociate, releasing O₂ for aerobic respiration. The equation can be summarised as:
Hb + 4O₂ ⇌ Hb(O₂)₄
The absence of a nucleus in mammalian red blood cells also means they cannot repair themselves; they have a limited lifespan of about 120 days and are broken down in the liver and spleen.
4. White Blood Cells and Immunity |
There are two main types of white blood cell involved in defence: phagocytes and lymphocytes. Phagocytes, such as neutrophils and monocytes, can change shape and squeeze out of capillaries to engulf pathogens in a process called phagocytosis. They digest the micro‑organisms using enzymes contained in lysosomes. Lymphocytes produce Y‑shaped proteins called antibodies that bind to specific antigens on the surface of pathogens, marking them for destruction or clumping them together for easier phagocytosis.
5. Platelets and Blood Clotting |
When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets are exposed to collagen fibres in the vessel wall. They become sticky and plug the wound. At the same time, a series of chemical reactions converts the soluble plasma protein fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin threads, which form a mesh that traps more platelets and red blood cells to create a solid clot. Vitamin K is needed for the synthesis of some clotting factors in the liver.
The clot seals the wound, prevents further blood loss and stops pathogens from entering. Later, the clot dries to form a scab, under which new skin cells grow.
6. Blood Vessels: Arteries, Veins and Capillaries |
The three main types of blood vessel differ in structure and function. The table below summarises their key features:
| Feature | Artery | Vein | Capillary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall thickness | Thick, muscular, elastic | Thin, less muscle/elastic | One cell thick |
| Lumen | Relatively small | Relatively large | Very narrow (one cell wide) |
| Valves | Absent | Present (prevent backflow) | Absent |
| Blood flow | Away from heart (high pressure) | Towards heart (low pressure) | Links arteries to veins |
| Function | Carry oxygenated blood (except pulmonary artery) | Carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein) | Exchange of gases, nutrients, waste |
Arteries must withstand high pressure generated by the heart; their thick muscle and elastic walls can stretch and recoil, evening out pulsatile flow. Veins experience much lower pressure and rely on skeletal muscle contraction and valves to return blood to the heart. Capillaries have walls only one cell thick to minimise the diffusion distance, making them ideal sites for material exchange.
7. Structure of the Heart |
The human heart is a muscular, double pump located in the chest cavity. It has four chambers: two upper atria and two lower ventricles. The right side deals with deoxygenated blood, pumping it to the lungs; the left side handles oxygenated blood, pumping it to the rest of the body. The wall of the left ventricle is much thicker than that of the right ventricle because it must generate enough force to send blood all around the body, while the right ventricle only needs to pump to the nearby lungs.
Major blood vessels entering and leaving the heart include the vena cava (brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium), pulmonary artery (takes deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to lungs), pulmonary vein (returns oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium) and aorta (distributes oxygenated blood from left ventricle to the body).
8. The Cardiac Cycle and Heart Valves |
The heart contracts and relaxes in a rhythmic cycle. The sequence is commonly described as: atrial systole (atria contract, forcing blood into ventricles), ventricular systole (ventricles contract, pumping blood out of the heart) and diastole (both atria and ventricles relax, heart fills with blood). Valves between the atria and ventricles (atrioventricular valves) and at the bases of the pulmonary artery and aorta (semilunar valves) prevent backflow of blood, ensuring one‑way circulation.
The 'lub‑dub' sound heard through a stethoscope is caused by the closing of the heart valves: 'lub' when the atrioventricular valves shut during ventricular systole, 'dub' when the semilunar valves close as the ventricles relax.
9. Double Circulation | 双循环
Mammals have a double circulatory system, meaning blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit. The right side drives the pulmonary circulation: deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs, where CO₂ diffuses out and O₂ diffuses in. The now oxygenated blood returns to the left side of the heart. The left side then powers the systemic circulation, sending oxygenated blood to all body tissues before returning as deoxygenated blood to the right side. This arrangement keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate, ensuring that tissues receive blood with a high oxygen content.
10. Coronary Heart Disease and Risk Factors |
The heart muscle itself requires a generous blood supply, provided by the coronary arteries. If these arteries become narrowed or blocked by fatty plaques (atherosclerosis), the heart muscle is starved of oxygen, leading to chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. Major risk factors include a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, high blood pressure and genetic predisposition.
Lifestyle changes – such as reducing intake of animal fats, increasing consumption of unsaturated fats, regular aerobic exercise and not smoking – can significantly lower the risk. Statins are drugs that lower blood cholesterol, and in severe cases a coronary bypass or stent insertion may be required.
11. Practical Investigations on Heart Rate |
Students often investigate how exercise affects heart rate. After measuring the resting pulse (beats per minute) at the wrist or neck, a person performs a set amount of exercise (e.g. step‑ups for 3 minutes), and the pulse is recorded immediately afterwards and at regular intervals until it returns to the resting level. This allows the recovery time to be calculated. In IGCSE exams, you may be asked to plot a line graph of heart rate against time and interpret the shape.
The increase in heart rate during exercise is linked to the greater demand for oxygen and the need to remove extra CO₂ produced by respiring muscles. After exercise, the heart rate remains elevated for a while to repay the 'oxygen debt' – additional oxygen required to break down the lactic acid accumulated during anaerobic respiration.
12. Connecting Structure to Function – Exam Tips |
When answering exam questions, always link the structure of a blood vessel or heart chamber to its function. For example, the left ventricle has a thick muscular wall because it must pump blood at high pressure over long distances. Capillaries have walls one cell thick, which shortens the diffusion pathway for rapid gas exchange. Red blood cells have no nucleus, enabling them to carry more haemoglobin. Use comparative language: 'arteries have thicker walls than veins because…' Memorising the names of the four heart chambers and the four major vessels is essential; sketch a simple diagram to practise labelling.
Be prepared to describe the route of a red blood cell from the right atrium, through the heart, to the lungs, back to the heart and then out to the body, naming each vessel and valve in order. Practise explaining the effect of narrowed coronary arteries on heart muscle and linking risk factors to public health advice. Clear, logical sequencing and use of scientific terms like 'phagocytosis', 'oxyhaemoglobin' and 'systemic circulation' will earn you higher marks.
