📚 Energy Resources & Electricity Generation |

Electricity is a secondary energy source because we must generate it from primary sources. Understanding how we convert different energy resources into electrical power is crucial for IGCSE Physics. This article covers fossil fuels, nuclear power, renewables, the mechanics of generators, and how the national grid transmits electricity efficiently.

1. Energy Resources Overview |

Energy resources are classified as non-renewable (finite) and renewable. Non-renewable resources include fossil fuels and nuclear fuel. Renewable resources are replenished at a rate comparable to consumption, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, geothermal, and biomass. Electricity generation involves converting the energy stored in these resources into a form that turns a turbine connected to a generator, or directly using photovoltaic cells.

2. Fossil Fuels: Coal, Oil and Natural Gas |

Fossil fuels formed from the remains of dead organisms over millions of years. They are burned in power stations to heat water into steam, which drives a turbine. Coal is the most abundant but produces the most CO₂ and pollutants. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, mainly releasing CO₂ and water vapour. Oil is used less for electricity generation but more for transport. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and sulphur dioxide, which causes acid rain. These resources are non-renewable and will eventually run out.

3. Nuclear Power | 核能

Nuclear power stations use the heat from nuclear fission (splitting of uranium-235 or plutonium nuclei) to produce steam. The fuel is contained in fuel rods inside a reactor core. Control rods absorb neutrons to regulate the chain reaction. A coolant (often water or gas) transfers heat to a steam generator. Nuclear fuel has a very high energy density; one kilogram of uranium can produce as much energy as thousands of tonnes of coal. Nuclear power produces no greenhouse gases during operation, but carries risks of accidents, radioactive waste disposal, and high decommissioning costs. It is a non-renewable resource because uranium ore is finite.

4. Thermal Power Station: Turbine and Generator |

Most large-scale electricity generation (coal, gas, oil, nuclear) relies on a thermal cycle. A heat source boils water into high-pressure steam. The steam rushes through nozzles and spins a turbine (a set of blades mounted on a shaft). The turbine shaft is connected to a generator. Inside the generator, a magnet rotates within coils of wire (or coils rotate in a magnetic field); this induces an alternating voltage according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. The result is alternating current (AC) electricity. The steam is then condensed and recycled. The overall efficiency is limited by the maximum steam temperature and the heat rejected to the condenser.

An alternating current generator (alternator) produces an alternating potential difference. Slip rings and brushes maintain the electrical connection. In IGCSE Physics, you might recall that the induced emf depends on the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.

5. Solar Energy |

Solar energy is harnessed in two main ways: photovoltaic (PV) cells and solar heating. PV cells convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials. They produce direct current (DC) and can be used for small-scale applications or connected in arrays for grid supply. Solar thermal power stations use mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a boiler, producing steam to drive a turbine. Solar energy is renewable, abundant, and produces no pollution during operation. However, it is intermittent (not available at night, reduced by cloud) and requires large areas for significant generation. The initial cost of PV panels is high, but running costs are very low.

6. Wind Power | 风能

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of moving air into electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft connected to a gearbox and then a generator. The generator produces AC electricity. Wind is a clean, renewable source with low running costs. However, wind is variable and unpredictable; turbines do not generate power when wind speed is too low or too high. They can be considered visually unattractive, produce noise, and may pose a threat to birds. Offshore wind farms can capture stronger, more consistent winds but are more expensive to install and maintain.

7. Hydroelectric Power |

Hydroelectric power stations use the gravitational potential energy of water stored behind a dam. When water is released, it flows through turbines, spinning them and driving generators. Hydroelectric energy is renewable, reliable (where there is sufficient rainfall), and produces no direct carbon emissions. Dams can also provide flood control and water supply. However, building large dams can cause environmental and social disruption, flooding large areas of land and displacing communities. There is also a risk of dam failure. Pumped-storage schemes can store energy by pumping water back to the upper reservoir when electricity demand is low.
