1. Types of Data and Sampling |
Data can be classified as qualitative (categorical) or quantitative (numerical). Quantitative data is further split into discrete (countable, e.g., number of students) and continuous (measurable, e.g., height in cm). Understanding the data type determines which statistical techniques are appropriate.
Reliable conclusions require representative samples. Simple random sampling gives each member of the population an equal chance. Stratified sampling divides the population into subgroups and samples proportionally, preserving key characteristics. Convenience sampling is easier but often biased.
A sample must be large enough to reduce variability and avoid undercoverage. IB exam questions frequently ask you to identify sampling methods and discuss potential sources of bias.
2. Measures of Central Tendency |
Central tendency describes the typical value in a data set. The mean, median, and mode each give a different measure of 'centre'. The sample mean is the sum of all observations divided by the count:
x̄ = (Σxᵢ) / n
The median is the middle value when data are ordered. For an even number of values, it is the average of the two middle numbers. The median resists extreme outliers, while the mean is pulled towards them.
The mode is the most frequent value and is particularly useful for categorical data. In a symmetric distribution the mean, median and mode coincide; in a skewed distribution they diverge.
3. Measures of Dispersion |
Dispersion measures how spread out the data are. The range (maximum – minimum) is simple but sensitive to outliers. The interquartile range (IQR = Q₃ – Q₁) covers the middle 50% of data and is robust to outliers.
The variance and standard deviation provide numerical summaries that use all data points. For a sample, the variance s² is calculated with divisor (n–1):
s² = Σ(xᵢ – x̄)² / (n – 1)
The standard deviation s is the square root of the variance. A small standard deviation indicates data clustered around the mean; a large one signals high variability.
Outliers can be identified using the rule: any point below Q₁ – e Q₃ + 1.5×IQR is a suspected outlier. You must know how to apply this rule on a box plot.
4. Graphical Representations |
Graphs summarise data visually. A histogram displays the frequency distribution of a continuous variable; the area of each bar is proportional to the frequency. Frequency density is used when class widths are unequal.
A box-and-whisker plot (box plot) shows the minimum, Q₁, median, Q₃ and maximum. It highlights the central tendency, spread, and possible outliers at a glance. The cumulative frequency curve visualises cumulative totals and helps estimate medians and percentiles.
IB exams regularly ask you to interpret these graphs, sketch them from data, or compare distributions using shape, centre, and spread. Always label axes and comment on skewness.
5. Introduction to Probability |
Probability is the measure of how likely an event is to occur, expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The sample space (S) lists all possible outcomes. An event A is a subset of the sample space, and its complement A' is everything not in A.
number of favourable outcomes) / (total number of outcomes). The addition rule handles unions:
P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A ∩ B)
If A and B are mutually exclusive (cannot happen together), P(A ∩ B) = 0, so P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B).
若 A 与 B 互斥(不能同时发生),P(A ∩ B) = 0,因此 P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B)。
Venn diagrams and tables are powerful tools for organising outcomes and calculating probabilities. Practice translating word problems into these visual structures.
6. Conditional Probability and Tree Diagrams |
Conditional probability P(A | B) is the probability that A occurs given that B has occurred. It is defined as:
P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) / P(B), provided P(B) > 0
This leads to the multiplication rule: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | h complete branch, the joint probability is the product of the probabilities on that path.
P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A)。
Two events are independent if P(A | B) = P(A), or equivalently P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B). Always check independence using these conditions.
P(A | B) = P(A) 或等价条件 P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B),则两个事件独立。
IB problems often combine conditional probability with 'given that' wording. Highlight keywords and draw the tree or table to avoid confusion.
7. Discrete Random Variables |
probability. The probability distribution must satisfy 0 ≤ P(X = x) ≤ 1 and ΣP(X = x) = 1.
The expected value E(X) is the theoretical mean of X. It is calculated as:
E(X) = Σ x · P(X = x)
Variance measures the spread of the distribution: Var(X) = E(X²) – where E(X²) = Σ x² · P(X = x). The standard deviation is the square root of the variance.
方差衡量分布的离散程度:Var(X) = E(X²) – [E(X)]²,其中 E(X²) = Σ x² · P(X = x)。
You should be able to construct a probability distribution table from a word problem and use the expectation to make decisions in contexts such as games of chance.
8. Binomial Distribution |
The binomial distribution models the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, each with the same probability of success p. If X follows a binomial distribution, we write X ~ B(n, p).
The probability of obtaining exactly k successes in n trials is:
P(X = k) = ⁿCₖ · pᵏ · (1 – p)ⁿ⁻ᵏ
where ⁿCₖ is the binomial coefficient 'n choose k'. The mean and variance of a binomial distribution are E(X) = np and Var(X) = np(1 – p).
二项分布的均值与方差为 E(X) = np 和 Var(X) = np(1 – p)。
You will use your GDC to calculate binomial probabilities, cumulative probabilities, and inverse binomial values. Recognise the binomial setting: fixed n, constant p, independence, and two outcomes (success/failure).
9. The Normal Distribution |
The normal distribution is a continuous probability distribution with a symmetric bell-shaped curve. It is fully characterised by its mean μ and standard deviation σ: X ~ N(μ, σ²). The total area under the curve equals 1.
The empirical rule states that approximately 68% of observations lie within μ ± σ, 95% within μ ± 2σ, and 99.7% should be able to sketch the curve and shade regions corresponding to given probabilities.
To compare values from different normal distributions, standardise using the z-score:
z = (x – μ) / σ
The standard normal distribution Z ~ N(0, 1) allows you to find probabilities and inverse normal values with a GDC. Always draw a diagram, label the mean, and clearly state the probability you are finding.
10. Bivariate Data and Correlation |
Bivariate data involve two variables measured on the same individuals. A scatter plot is the first step to visualise the relationship. Look for direction (positive or negative), form (linear or non‑linear), and strength.
tion coefficient r measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship. r ranges from – ate strong linear correlation, while values near 0 suggest weak or no linear relationship.
It is essential to note that correlation does not imply causation. A high correlation between two variables could be due to a lurking third variable or coincidence. IB examiners often ask you to interpret r in context and comment on reliability.
+ bx. Use it only within the range of the observed data to make predictions, and beware of extrapolation.
