📚 Thermal Concepts |
Thermal physics is the study of heat, temperature, and the transfer of energy on both macroscopic and microscopic scales. In IB Physics, thermal concepts form the foundation for understanding energy changes in systems, phase transitions, and the behaviour of matter at different temperatures. This article covers the essential thermal concepts, linking everyday observations to rigorous physical laws.
1. Temperature and Thermometers |
Temperature is a measure of the average random kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. It is a scalar quantity and determines the direction of spontaneous heat flow—from a region of higher temperature to one of lower temperature. Thermometers rely on thermometric properties such as the expansion of a liquid, the resistance of a metal, or the pressure of a gas at constant volume. A good thermometer must be sensitive, have a wide range, and respond linearly to temperature changes.
To calibrate a thermometer, two fixed points are needed—commonly the ice point (0 °C) and the steam point (100 °C) under standard atmospheric pressure. In the Celsius scale, the interval between these points is divided into 100 equal parts. Modern thermometry often uses the triple point of water (0.01 °C) as a more precise reference.
2. Heat, Internal Energy, and the Zeroth Law |
Heat (Q) is energy transferred between a system and its surroundings solely due to a temperature difference. It is a process quantity, not a property stored in a system. Internal energy (U) is the total energy of all particles in a system—the sum of their random kinetic energies and the potential energies arising from intermolecular forces. When heat flows into a system, its internal energy increases, provided no work is done.
The zeroth law of thermodynamics states that if two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other. This seemingly simple law underpins the concept of temperature and justifies the use of thermometers: a thermometer must reach thermal equilibrium with the object being measured to indicate an accurate temperature.
3. Kelvin and Celsius Temperature Scales |
ing with temperature differences, ΔT (in K) is numerically equal to Δθ (in °C). This equivalence simplifies thermal calculations, as specific heat capacities can be expressed in J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹ or J kg⁻¹ °C⁻¹ without conversion.
Using the absolute scale is essential in the ideal gas equation and in radiation laws, where temperature appears to the fourth power. The triple point of water (273.16 K) provides a single fixed point for defining the Kelvin.
4. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容
is mass and Δθ is the temperature change. The SI unit of c is J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹. Materials with high specific heat capacities absorb a lot of energy for a small temperature rise, making them useful as thermal stores or coolants.
| Substance | Specific heat capacity / J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹ |
|---|---|
| Water | 4186 |
| Aluminium | 900 |
| Iron | 450 |
| Copper | 385 |
| Air (at constant pressure) | ≈1000 |
Water's exceptionally high specific heat capacity (4186 J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹) explains why coastal regions experience milder climates than inland areas—the sea stores vast amounts of thermal energy during the day and releases it slowly at night. In engineering, water is a primary coolant in car engines and power stations for the same reason.
5. Phase Changes and Latent Heat |
During a phase change—melting, freezing, boiling, or condensing— es energy without a change in temperature. This energy is called latent heat because it is 'hidden' uired to change phase at constant temperature. For fusion (solid ↔ liquid) we write Q = mLf, and for vaporisation (liquid ↔ gas) Q = mLv.
For water, Lf ≈ 3.34 × 10⁵ J kg⁻¹ and Lv t heat of vaporisation explains why steam at 100 °C can cause far more severe burns than boiling water at the same temperature: the steam must first condense, releasing over 2 million joules per kilogram, before it can cool down.
Evaporation is a cooling process because the particles with the highest kinetic energy escape from the liquid surface, reducing the average kinetic energy of the remaining liquid. This principle is at work when sweat evaporates from the skin, drawing heat from the body.
6. Thermal Conduction | 热传导
Conduction is the transfer of heat through a material without bulk movement of the material itself. It occurs predominantly in solids where particles vibrate about fixed positions and pass kinetic energy to neighbouring particles. In metals, free electrons also drift and collide, greatly enhancing the rate of conduction. The thermal conductivity k of a material quantifies how well it conducts heat; metals have high k values, while insulating materials like fibreglass or air have low k values.
A(Δθ/d), where A is the cross-sectional area, d is the thickness, and Δθ is the temperature difference across the slab. Reducing conduction is key in thermal insulation— etween panes, and a vacuum flask uses a near-vacuum gap to virtually eliminate conduction.
7. Convection | 对流
Convection is the transfer of heat by the mass movement of a fluid (liquid or gas). When a fluid is heated from below, it expands, becomes less dense, and rises. Cooler, denser fluid then sinks to take its place, establishing a convection current. This mechanism efficiently transports thermal energy in fluids and is responsible for phenomena such as sea breezes, mantle convection in the Earth, and the circulation of water in a heating system.
Forced convection, achieved with fans or pumps, enhances the rate of heat transfer. Car radiators use a pump to circulate coolant and a fan to blow air over the fins, dramatically increasing the cooling rate. In natural convection, the driving force is the buoyancy caused by density differences, and the process ceases in a microgravity environment where buoyancy disappears.
8. Thermal Radiation |
n requires no material medium and can propagate through a vacuum. All objects at a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. The net power radiated by an ideal black body is given by the Stefan– ma;AT⁴, where ε is the emissivity (0 < ε ≤ 1), σ is the Stefan– onstant (5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴), A is the surface area, and T is the absolute temperature.
Good emitters are also good absorbers of radiation. Dark, matt surfaces have high emissivity (close to 1), while shiny, light-coloured surfaces have low emissivity. This is why a brightly polished teapot stays hotter for longer, and why solar panels often have dark, matte absorbers. The vacuum
