📚 Standard Enthalpy of Formation: Definition, Calculation and Exam Guide |
The standard enthalpy of formation, written as ΔHf⦵, is one of the cornerstones of thermochemistry in the IB Chemistry syllabus and in A Level courses. It allows chemists to quantify the energy absorbed or released when a compound is created from its elements in their most stable states. Mastering this concept unlocks the ability to calculate enthalpy changes for practically any reaction using tabulated data, making it an indispensable tool for both exams and laboratory work.
1. The Big Picture of Enthalpy Changes |
Enthalpy (H) is a measure of the total heat content of a system. In the laboratory, we rarely deal with absolute enthalpies; instead, we measure enthalpy changes (ΔH) during chemical and physical processes. A negative ΔH indicates an exothermic process, where heat is released to the surroundings, while a positive ΔH signals an endothermic process that absorbs heat. The standard enthalpy of formation is a special type of enthalpy change that serves as a reference point for countless thermochemical calculations.
Many enthalpy changes cannot be measured directly, which is why chemists have built a vast database of ΔHf⦵ values. Once we know the standard enthalpy of formation for every substance involved in a reaction, we can apply Hess's law indirectly to find the overall enthalpy change. This approach lies at the heart of nearly every thermochemical question you will meet in an examination paper.
It is worth remembering that enthalpy is a state function. That means the enthalpy change between two states depends only on the initial and final states, not on the route taken between them. This single property is what makes data tables of ΔHf⦵ so powerful: any reaction can be broken down into imaginary formation steps, and the energies simply add up.
2. What Is the Standard Enthalpy of Formation? |
The standard enthalpy of formation of a compound is the enthalpy change when one mole of the compound is formed from its constituent elements in their standard states, under standard conditions. It is also called the standard molar enthalpy of formation, and its symbol carries two pieces of information: the subscript f tells you it is a formation reaction, and the superscript ⦵ tells you that standard conditions apply.
C(s, graphite) + 2H₂(g) → CH₄(g) ΔHf⦵ = −74.8 kJ mol⁻¹
Every part of the definition is examinable. The phrase 'one mole' means the value is always quoted per mole of the compound produced, so it is an intensive quantity: doubling the equation does not change the value of ΔHf⦵, although doubling a reaction equation does double the ΔH of that reaction. The phrase 'constituent elements' means that only elements may appear on the left-hand side, never compounds.
The units are always kJ mol⁻¹, and the value depends on the physical state of both the elements and the compound. A formation enthalpy is therefore not a property of a formula alone but of a formula in a specified phase, which is why the state symbols in an equation are never optional in thermochemistry.
3. Standard Conditions and Standard States |
Standard conditions in thermochemistry are a pressure of 100 kPa (1 bar) and a specified temperature, conventionally 298 K (25 °C). For species in aqueous solution, the standard concentration is 1 mol dm⁻³. IUPAC defines the standard state at a stated temperature rather than fixing 298 K, but virtually every data table you will use in an examination quotes values at 298 K, so always assume 298 K unless told otherwise.
The standard state of an element is its most stable physical and chemical form under those conditions. This is a favourite examinable list, and getting it wrong will ruin an otherwise perfect calculation:
- Oxygen exists as O₂(g), nitrogen as N₂(g), hydrogen as H₂(g), and the halogens as F₂(g), Cl₂(g), Br₂(l) and I₂(s). | 氧为 O₂(g),氮为 N₂(g),氢为 H₂(g),卤素分别为 F₂(g)、Cl₂(g)、Br₂(l)、I₂(s)。
- Carbon's standard state is graphite, not diamond, even though diamond is also a form of carbon. |
- Metals such as Na, Mg, Al, Fe and Cu are written as solids, and sulfur as the rhombic S₈(s) form at 298 K. | 钠、镁、铝、铁、铜等金属写作固态,硫在 298 K 下写作斜方硫 S₈(s)。
Notice that standard conditions do not include 'room temperature air' or any particular surroundings. Changing the temperature changes the value of ΔHf⦵ slightly, but for the temperature ranges used in school and undergraduate courses the variation is normally ignored.
4. Sign Conventions: Exothermic and Endothermic Formation |
When a compound is more stable than the elements from which it is made, energy is released during its formation and ΔHf⦵ is negative. Most common compounds behave this way. Methane (−74.8 kJ mol⁻¹), water as a liquid (−285.8 kJ mol⁻¹), carbon dioxide (−393.5 kJ mol⁻¹) and ethanol (−277.7 kJ mol⁻¹) are all formed exothermically.
A positive ΔHf⦵ means the compound is less stable, or higher in enthalpy, than its elements at 298 K. Nitrogen monoxide has ΔHf⦵ e) has +228 kJ mol⁻¹; both are thermodynamically unstable relative to their elements, which is exactly why acetylene can release so much energy when it burns or decomposes.
Two sign traps appear constantly in examinations. First, a negative ΔHf⦵ the sign: decomposing one mole of liquid water into its elements has ΔH = +285.8 kJ mol⁻¹.
5. The Three Golden Rules of ΔHf⦵ |
Rule one: the standard enthalpy of formation of any element in its standard state is exactly zero. This is the definitional reference point of the whole scale, in the same way that sea level is the zero of altitude. O₂(g), N₂(g), H₂(g), C(graphite), Br₂(l) and Na(s) all have ΔHf⦵ = 0 kJ mol⁻¹.
Rule two: only the most stable allotrope has a zero value. Diamond, ozone and white phosphorus are elements, but they are not the standard states of carbon, oxygen and phosphorus at 298 K, so their formation enthalpies are non-zero: diamond is about +1.9 kJ mol⁻¹, and ozone about +142.7 kJ mol⁻¹.
Rule three: the value belongs to one mole of a specific phase. Water illustrates this perfectly. ΔHf⦵[H₂O(l)] = −285.8 kJ mol⁻¹ while ΔHf⦵ rence of 44.0 kJ mol⁻¹ is simply the enthalpy of vaporisation. Choosing the wrong phase in a calculation is one of the most common ways to lose marks.
6. Writing Formation Equations Correctly |
A formation equation must satisfy three conditions: exactly one mole of the compound is produced, every reactant is an element in its standard state, and the equation is balanced. Fractional coefficients are perfectly acceptable for the elements, because the definition is anchored to one mole of product rather than to whole numbers of atoms.
H₂(g) + ½O₂(g) → H₂O(l) ΔHf⦵ = −285.8 kJ mol⁻¹
2C(s) + 3H₂(g) + ½O₂(g) → C₂H₅OH(l) ΔHf⦵ = −277.7 kJ mol⁻¹
uid ethanol is formed. If a question asks for the equation corresponding to the formation of two moles of ammonia, the correct answer is N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) → 2NH₃(g) with ΔH = 2 × (−46.1) = −92.2 kJ mol⁻¹, not −46.1 kJ mol⁻¹.
7. Calculating ΔHrxn⦵ from Tabulated Data |
Because enthalpy is a state function, the enthalpy change of any reaction can be written as the total formation enthalpy of the products minus the total formation enthalpy of the reactants. This is the single most used equation in thermochemistry, and it converts a table of numbers into an answer for any reaction you can balance.
ΔHrxn⦵ = Σ ΔHf⦵(products) − Σ ΔHf⦵(reactants)
The symbol Σ means 'sum of', and it reminds you to multiply each tabulated value by its stoichiometric coefficient before adding. Elements in their standard states contribute zero, which is why oxygen, nitrogen and graphite often vanish from the calculation entirely. The standard state symbol ⦵ should appear in your final answer.
| Substance | ΔHf⦵ / kJ mol⁻¹ |
| CH₄(g) | −74.8 |
| CO₂(g) | −393.5 |
| H₂O(l) | −285.8 |
| H₂O(g) | −241.8 |
| C₂H₅OH(l) | −277.7 |
| O₂(g) | 0 |
Notice how the phase of water matters. Using H₂O(g) instead of H₂O(l) in a combustion calculation changes the answer by 44.0 kJ mol⁻¹ per mole of water, which is easily enough to move you outside the accepted answer range.
