📚 Periodic Trends in IB Chemistry | IB
The periodic table organises elements based on their atomic number, revealing repeating patterns in physical and chemical properties. Understanding periodic trends—such as atomic radius, ionisation energy and electronegativity—is fundamental for predicting the behaviour of elements and their compounds. In IB Chemistry, these trends are explained through electron configurations, effective nuclear charge and shielding.
1. Effective Nuclear Charge and Shielding |
The effective nuclear charge (Zeff) experienced by an outer electron is the net positive charge from the nucleus after accounting for the shielding effect of inner-shell electrons. Zeff increases across a period because the number of protons increases while the shielding effect from inner electrons remains approximately constant. Down a group, Zeff remains relatively constant as both nuclear charge and shielding increase.
Shielding is the reduction of the full nuclear charge due to the presence of inner electrons. Electrons in the same shell do not shield each other effectively, leading to a steady increase in Zeff across a period. This increase in Zeff drives many periodic trends, pulling electrons closer to the nucleus.
2. Atomic Radius |
Atomic radius is half the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms. Across a period, atomic radius decreases because the increasing effective nuclear charge pulls the outer electrons closer to the nucleus without a significant increase in shielding. Down a group, atomic radius increases because electrons occupy higher energy levels farther from the nucleus, and the effect of increased nuclear charge is offset by greater shielding and distance.
For the main-group elements, the covalent radius decreases from left to right. Noble gases are not usually included because they do not form covalent bonds; their van der Waals radii are larger. The largest atoms are found in the bottom left of the periodic table, while the smallest are in the top right (excluding noble gases).
3. Ionic Radius |
Cations are smaller than their parent atoms because the loss of outer electrons reduces electron–electron repulsion and often results in the loss of the outermost shell entirely, while the nuclear charge remains unchanged. Anions are larger than their parent atoms because the addition of electrons increases repulsion and the effective nuclear charge per electron decreases.
For isoelectronic species (ions with the same number of electrons), ionic radius decreases with increasing atomic number because the greater nuclear charge pulls the electrons in more tightly. For example, N³⁻ > O²⁻ > F⁻ > Na⁺ > Mg²⁺ > Al³⁺. The trend is a direct consequence of increasing Zeff across the isoelectronic series.
4. Ionisation Energy | 电离能
⁺(g) + e⁻. Across a period, first ionisation energy generally increases because atomic radius decreases and Zeff increases, making it harder to remove an electron.
Down a group, first ionisation energy decreases because atomic radius increases and the outer electron is farther from the nucleus, experiencing greater shielding. Successive ionisation energies always increase for a given element because after each electron removal, electron–electron repulsion decreases and Zeff per electron increases.
Exceptions occur in Period 3: the first ionisation energy of aluminium (578 kJ mol⁻¹) is lower than that of magnesium (738 kJ mol⁻¹) because Mg loses an electron from a filled 3s subshell (3s²), whereas Al has a 3p¹ electron that is higher in energy and easier to remove. Similarly, sulfur (1000 kJ mol⁻¹) has a lower first ionisation energy than phosphorus (1012 kJ mol⁻¹) because the paired electrons in the 3p⁴ subshell of S experience extra repulsion, making electron removal easier.
| Element | Na | Mg | Al | Si | P | S | Cl | Ar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IE₁ (kJ mol⁻¹) | 496 | 738 | 578 | 786 | 1012 | 1000 | 1251 | 1521 |
5. Electron Affinity |
The first electron affinity is usually exothermic (negative ΔH) because the incoming electron is attracted by the nucleus. Across a period, electron affinity generally becomes more exothermic (more negative) as Zeff increases and atomic radius decreases, with halogens showing the most negative values.
endothermic because adding an electron to an already negative ion requires overcoming electrostatic repulsion. In addition, the first electron affinity of fluorine is less negative than that of chlorine, an anomaly caused by the extremely small size of the fluorine atom, which leads to significant electron–electron repulsion in the compact 2p orbitals.
6. Electronegativity | 电负性
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond. Across a period, electronegativity increases due to higher Zeff and decreasing atomic radius. Down a group, electronegativity decreases because atomic radius increases and the bonding electrons are farther from the nucleus. Fluorine is the most electronegative element (4.0 on the Pauling scale), while caesium and francium are the least electronegative.
Electronegativity values help predict bond polarity. A large difference in electronegativity between two atoms leads to an ionic bond, while a small difference favours a covalent bond. The trend closely follows ionisation energy and electron affinity, all driven by effective nuclear charge and atomic size.
7. Metallic and Non-metallic Character |
Metallic character refers to the tendency of an element to lose electrons and form positive ions; it increases down a group and decreases across a period. Non-metallic character refers to the tendency to gain electrons and form negative ions; it increases across a period and decreases down a group. Thus, the most metallic elements are found in the lower left of the periodic table (e.g. Cs, Fr), and the most non-metallic are in the upper right (e.g. F, O).
Physical properties follow these trends: metals are typically shiny, malleable, ductile and good conductors, while non-metals are often dull, brittle and poor conductors. The reactivity of metals with water or acids also follows the trend, with group 1 metals being extremely reactive. Across Period 3, the character changes from highly metallic sodium to the clearly non-metallic sulfur and chlorine.
8. Acid–Base Nature of Oxides |
Metal oxides on the left of the periodic table are typically basic; they react with acids to form salt and water. Non-metal oxides on the right are typically acidic; they react with bases to form salt and water, and many dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions. Amphoteric oxides, such as Al₂O₃, can react with both acids and bases.
Across a period, the acid–base character of oxides shifts from basic, through amphoteric, to acidic. For example, in Period 3: Na₂O is strongly basic, MgO is basic, Al₂O₃ is amphoteric, SiO₂ is weakly acidic (does not dissolve in water but reacts with hot concentrated alkalis), and P₄O₁₀, SO₃ and Cl₂O₇ are strongly acidic, forming phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid and perchloric acid respectively.
9. Trends Across Period 3 |
Period 3 elements (Na to Ar) illustrate all major periodic trends in a clear sequence. Atomic radius decreases from Na to Ar, while first ionisation energy generally rises with the notable drops at Al and S explained by subshell electronic configurations. Electronegativity increases from sodium (0.9) to chlorine (3.0), and metallic character gives way to non-metallic character.
Electrical conductivity peaks at aluminium, reflecting metallic bonding, and then drops sharply at silicon, a metalloid with semiconducting properties. The melting points increase from Na to Si (giant covalent structure in Si gives the highest melting point), then fall for the simple molecular non-metals P₄, S₈, Cl₂ and Ar. The acid–base nature of oxides shifts across the period as described.
