📚 Types and States of Matter | 物质类型与状态

Understanding what matter is, how it is classified, and the different states it can adopt forms the foundation of chemistry. In the IB Diploma Programme, the topic of types and states of matter connects the macroscopic properties we observe with the behaviour of particles at the atomic and molecular level. This article explores the classification of matter into pure substances and mixtures, examines the three common states of matter, and extends the discussion to kinetic particle theory, phase changes, diffusion, and more exotic states such as plasma and Bose–Einstein condensates.

理解物质是什么、如何分类以及它可以呈现哪些不同状态,是化学的基础。在IB文凭课程中,物质类型与状态这一主题将我们观察到的宏观性质与原子和分子层面粒子的行为联系起来。本文探讨物质分为纯物质和混合物的分类,检视常见的三种物质状态,并将讨论扩展到粒子运动理论、相变、扩散以及更奇特的状态,如等离子体和玻色–爱因斯坦凝聚态。

1. Introduction to Matter | 物质简介

Matter is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space (volume). Everything we can touch, see, or measure in the physical universe is made of matter, from the tiny dust particles floating in sunlight to the vast oceans and mountains that shape our planet.

物质被定义为任何具有质量并占据空间(体积)的东西。我们在物理宇宙中能触摸、看到或测量的一切都是由物质构成的,从阳光下飘浮的微小尘埃到塑造地球的辽阔海洋和山脉。

At the microscopic level, all matter consists of tiny, constantly moving particles – atoms, molecules, or ions. The specific arrangement of these particles and the forces between them dictate the physical state and properties of the material, such as hardness, fluidity, and compressibility.

在微观层面上,所有物质都由微小的、不断运动的粒子(原子、分子或离子)组成。这些粒子的排列方式以及它们之间的作用力决定了材料的物理状态和性质,例如硬度、流动性和可压缩性。

2. Classification of Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures | 物质分类:纯物质与混合物

Chemists classify matter into two broad categories: pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance has a fixed, definite composition and characteristic properties that do not vary from sample to sample. Pure substances are further divided into elements and compounds. In contrast, a mixture contains two or more substances that are physically combined, meaning their proportions can vary and each component retains its own properties.

化学家将物质分为两大类:纯物质和混合物。纯物质具有固定且确定的组成,以及不同样品之间不会变化的特性。纯物质进一步分为元素和化合物。相反,混合物包含两种或多种以物理方式混合在一起的物质,这意味着它们的比例可以变化,且各组分保持自身的性质。

Pure SubstancesMixtures
Elements (e.g., O₂, Fe, Au)Homogeneous mixtures (e.g., salt water, air)
Compounds (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, NaCl)Heterogeneous mixtures (e.g., sand in water, oil and vinegar)

One useful way to distinguish a pure substance from a mixture is by examining melting and boiling points: pure substances melt and boil at sharp, fixed temperatures, whereas mixtures typically melt or boil over a range of temperatures. This distinction is often employed in the laboratory to assess purity.

区分纯物质和混合物的一个实用方法是检查熔点和沸点:纯物质在尖锐而固定的温度下熔化和沸腾,而混合物通常在一个温度范围内熔化或沸腾。这一区别常用于实验室评估物质的纯度。

3. Elements: The Simplest Form of Matter | 元素:物质的最简形式

An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Each element consists of only one type of atom, characterised by a unique number of protons in its nucleus – the atomic number. The Periodic Table organises all known elements according to their atomic number and recurring chemical properties.

元素是一种不能用化学方法分解成更简单物质的纯物质。每种元素仅由一种类型的原子组成,其特征是原子核中具有独特的质子数,即原子序数。元素周期表根据原子序数和周期性化学性质将所有已知元素组织起来。

Some elements exist as individual atoms (monatomic), such as helium (He) and neon (Ne), while many others naturally form molecules of two or more identical atoms bonded together, such as dioxygen (O₂) and nitrogen (N₂). Elements like carbon can also form giant covalent networks, giving rise to allotropes such as diamond and graphite with strikingly different physical properties.

有些元素以单个原子形式存在(单原子),例如氦(He)和氖(Ne);而许多其他元素自然形成由两个或更多相同原子键合在一起的分子,例如氧气(O₂)和氮气(N₂)。碳等元素还可以形成巨型共价网络,从而产生同素异形体,如金刚石和石墨,具有截然不同的物理性质。

4. Compounds: Chemical Combinations | 化合物:化学结合

A compound is a pure substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically combined in a fixed ratio. The resulting substance has properties that are entirely different from those of its constituent elements. For example, water (H₂O) is a liquid at room temperature, yet it is formed from hydrogen and oxygen, both of which are gases under the same conditions.

化合物是由两种或多种不同元素以固定比例化学结合而成的纯物质。生成的物质具有与其组成元素完全不同的性质。例如,水(H₂O)在室温下是液体,但它由氢和氧形成,在相同条件下两者均为气体。

Compounds can be classified by the type of bonding holding their particles together. Ionic compounds, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), consist of a lattice of positive and negative ions held together by strong electrostatic forces; they tend to have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water. Covalent compounds, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), exist as discrete molecules with weaker intermolecular forces, resulting in lower melting and boiling points and poor electrical conductivity.

化合物可以根据将其粒子结合在一起的键合类型进行分类。离子化合物,如氯化钠(NaCl),由正负离子组成的晶格通过强大的静电力结合在一起;它们往往具有高熔点,并在熔融或溶于水时导电。共价化合物,如二氧化碳(CO₂)和甲烷(CH₄),以离散分子形式存在,具有较弱的分子间作用力,因而熔点和沸点较低,导电性较差。

5. Mixtures: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous | 混合物:均相与非均相

Mixtures can be separated into homogeneous and heterogeneous types based on the uniformity of their composition. A homogeneous mixture, also called a solution, has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout; the components are mixed at the molecular level and cannot be visually distinguished. Air, salt water, and metal alloys such as brass (copper and zinc) are familiar examples.

混合物可依据组成均匀性分为均相和非均相两类。均相混合物,也称为溶液,整个体系具有一致的外观和组成;各组分在分子水平上混合,无法用肉眼区分。空气、盐水和合金如黄铜(铜和锌)都是常见的例子。

A heterogeneous mixture, on the other hand, does not have a uniform composition; the different components can often be seen as separate phases. Suspensions, such as muddy water, and emulsions, like oil shaken with vinegar, are typical heterogeneous mixtures. The components of a mixture can be separated by physical techniques such as filtration, distillation, chromatography, or evaporation, exploiting differences in physical properties like boiling point, particle size, or solubility.

另一方面,非均相混合物不具有均匀的组成;不同组分通常以分离的相的形式可见。悬浊液(如泥水)和乳浊液(如油与醋摇匀)是典型的非均相混合物。混合物的组分可以通过物理技术进行分离,如过滤、蒸馏、色谱法或蒸发,这些方法利用了物理性质(如沸点、粒径或溶解度)的差异。

6. States of Matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas | 物质的状态:固态、液态和气态

The three most familiar states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. In the solid state, particles are tightly packed in a regular, ordered arrangement. They vibrate around fixed positions, giving solids a definite shape and a fixed volume that do not depend on the container. Solids are almost incompressible and, due to strong inter-particle forces, have high densities.

三种最常见的物质状态是固态、液态和气态。在固态中,粒子紧密堆积,呈规则有序的排列。它们在固定位置附近振动,使得固体具有确定的形状和固定的体积,与容器无关。固体几乎不可压缩,由于粒子间作用力强,密度较高。

Liquids have particles that are still close together but no longer held in fixed positions; they can slide past one another. As a result, a liquid has a fixed volume but takes the shape of the bottom part of its container. Liquids flow, have slightly lower densities than their corresponding solids, and are only slightly compressible.

液体的粒子仍然紧密聚集,但不再保持在固定位置;它们可以彼此滑动。因此,液体具有固定的体积,但呈现其容器底部的形状。液体可以流动,密度略低于其对应的固体,且仅可轻微压缩。

In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, colliding with each other and the container walls. Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume; they expand to fill the entire available space and are highly compressible. The density of a gas is much lower than that of solids or liquids.

在气体中,粒子相距很远,沿所有方向快速运动,彼此碰撞并与容器壁碰撞。气体既无固定形状,也无固定体积;它们会膨胀以充满可用的整个空间,并且高度可压缩。气体的密度远低于固体或液体。

7. Kinetic Particle Theory and State | 粒子运动理论与物质状态

The kinetic particle theory explains the behaviour of solids, liquids, and gases in terms of the motion, spacing, and interactions of their particles. All particles possess kinetic energy, and the average kinetic energy of the particles is directly proportional to the absolute temperature (Kelvin scale). As temperature increases, particles vibrate or move more vigorously.

粒子运动理论通过粒子的运动、间距和相互作用来解释固体、液体和气体的行为。所有粒子都具有动能,粒子的平均动能与绝对温度(开尔文温标)成正比。随着温度升高,粒子振动或运动更加剧烈。

In a solid, the kinetic energy is relatively low; the particles can only vibrate about mean positions and cannot overcome the strong attractive forces holding them together. When the solid is heated, the vibration amplitude increases until, at the melting point, the particles have enough energy to break free from their ordered arrangement and slide over one another, forming a liquid. Further heating gives particles sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the remaining intermolecular forces, allowing them to move freely and become a gas. The particle model thus successfully accounts for changes of state without any change in the particles' chemical identity.

在固体中,动能相对较低;粒子只能在平衡位置附近振动,无法克服将其束缚在一起的强大吸引力。当固体受热时,振幅增大,直到在熔点处粒子获得足够能量,脱离有序排列并彼此滑动,形成液体。进一步加热使粒子获得足够的动能来克服残余的分子间力,使其自由移动并变为气体。因此,粒子模型成功地解释了状态的变化,而粒子的化学性质不发生任何变化。

8. Phase Transitions and Energy | 相变与能量

ling and evaporation), condensation (gas → liquid), sublimation (solid → gas without passing through the liquid phase), and deposition (gas → solid, the reverse of sublimation).

物质状态之间的变化称为相变。每种相变都有特定的名称,并伴随能量的吸收或释放。最常见的相变有:熔化(固→液)、凝固(液→固)、汽化(液→气,包括沸腾和蒸发)、冷凝(气→液)、升华(固→气而不经过液态)和凝华(气→固,升华的逆过程)。

Melting, boiling, evaporation, and sublimation are endothermic processes; they require an input of energy to overcome the attractive forces between particles. In contrast, freezing, condensation, and deposition are exothermic processes; energy is released as bonds form between particles. During a phase change, the temperature of a pure substance remains constant even though heat is being added or removed. This plateau is clearly visible on a heating or cooling curve and provides evidence that the energy supplied is used to change the potential energy arrangement of the particles, not their average kinetic energy.

熔化、沸腾、蒸发和升华是吸热过程;它们需要输入能量以克服粒子间的吸引力。相反,凝固、冷凝和凝华是放热过程;当粒子间形成键时能量被释放出来。在相变过程中,纯物质的温度即使加热或冷却也保持恒定。这一平台在加热或冷却曲线上清晰可见,并证明了所供应的能量用于改变粒子的势能排布,而非平均动能。

9. Diffusion and the Particle Model | 扩散与粒子模型

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, driven by the random motion of particles. It occurs in all states of matter but at markedly different rates. Diffusion provides direct evidence for the kinetic particle theory and the idea that particles are in constant, random motion.

扩散是粒子在随机运动的驱动下从高浓度区域向低浓度区域的净移动。它在所有物质状态中都会发生,但速率明显不同。扩散为粒子运动理论以及粒子处于持续随机运动的想法提供了直接证据。

Gases diffuse the fastest because their particles are far apart and move at high speeds with frequent collisions. A classic demonstration is placing a few drops of bromine liquid in a gas jar; the red‑brown vapour gradually spreads throughout the jar. In the famous ammonium chloride ring experiment, concentrated ammonia solution (NH₃) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) are soaked into cotton wool at opposite ends of a glass tube. The gases diffuse and react to form a white ring of ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl). The ring forms closer to the hydrochloric acid end because the heavier HCl particles diffuse more slowly than the lighter NH₃ particles, in agreement with Graham's law of effusion. Liquids also undergo diffusion, but much more slowly because particles are closer together. Diffusion in solids is extremely slow and negligible at room temperature.

10. Beyond the Common States: Plasma and BEC | 常见状态之外:等离子体与玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚

Although solids, liquids, and gases dominate everyday experience, two other states of matter are recognised in advanced studies: plasma and Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). Plasma is a highly energetic, ionised gas consisting of free electrons and positive ions. It is the most abundant state of matter in the universe, found in stars, lightning, and fluorescent lamps. Because plasma contains charged particles, it conducts electricity and responds strongly to electromagnetic fields.

尽管固体、液体和气体在日常生活中占主导地位,但在深入学习中还有另外两种物质状态被认可:等离子体和玻色–爱因斯坦凝聚态(BEC)。等离子体是一种高能量的电离气体,由自由电子和正离子组成。它是宇宙中最丰富的物质状态,存在于恒星、闪电和荧光灯中。由于等离子体含有带电粒子,它能导电并对电磁场产生强烈响应。

At the opposite extreme of temperature, when a gas of bosons (particles with integer spin) is cooled to temperatures near absolute zero, the particles lose their individual identities and coalesce into a single quantum state, forming a Bose–Einstein condensate. In this state, quantum mechanical effects become observable on a macroscopic scale, such as superfluidity. While not part of the standard IB syllabus for all routes, these states illustrate the rich diversity of matter beyond the classic solid–liquid–gas model.

在温度的另一个极端,当一种玻色子(整数自旋的粒子)气体被冷却到接近绝对零度的温度时,粒子失去个体身份,凝聚成一个单一的量子态,形成玻色–爱因斯坦凝聚态。在这种状态下,量子力学效应在宏观尺度上变得可观察,比如超流现象。尽管并非所有IB课程路径的标准大纲内容,但这些状态展示了超越经典固‑液‑气模型的丰富物质多样性。
