📚 Energetics and Thermochemistry |
Energetics, often called thermochemistry, is the branch of chemistry that deals with the heat absorbed or released during chemical reactions and physical transformations. It allows us to predict whether a reaction is feasible, how much energy it will transfer, and why some processes need a continuous energy supply to occur.
1. The System and Surroundings |
In thermochemistry, we define the 'system' as the chemical reaction or physical process under study, while the 'surroundings' comprise everything else in the universe that can exchange energy with the system. An open system can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings; a closed system exchanges energy but not matter; an isolated system exchanges neither.
The total energy of the universe is constant: ΔUuniverse = 0. Energy lost by the system equals energy gained by the surroundings, which is a direct consequence of the first law of thermodynamics.
2. Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |
An exothermic reaction releases heat to its surroundings, causing the temperature of the surroundings to rise. The enthalpy change, ΔH, is negative. Typical examples include combustion of fuels, neutralisation of strong acids and bases, and respiration.
An endothermic reaction absorbs heat from its surroundings, so ΔH is positive. The reaction mixture feels colder, and the process requires a continuous input of energy. Photosynthesis, thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate, and the reaction between citric acid and sodium hydrogencarbonate are common examples.
3. Standard Enthalpy Changes |
To compare enthalpy changes fairly, we use standard conditions: a pressure of 100 kPa (1 bar), a stated temperature (usually 298 K), and all substances in their standard states. A standard enthalpy change is denoted by the symbol ΔH°.
Important standard enthalpies include:
| Standard enthalpy of reaction (ΔrH°) | Enthalpy change when molar quantities of reactants react under standard conditions. |
| Standard enthalpy of formation (ΔfH°) | Enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states. |
| Standard enthalpy of combustion (ΔcH°) | Enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is burned completely in oxygen under standard conditions. |
| Standard enthalpy of neutralisation (ΔneutH°) | Enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed from the neutralisation of an acid by a base under standard conditions. |
By definition, the standard enthalpy of formation of any element in its most stable form is zero.
4. Calorimetry and Experimental Determination |
Enthalpy changes can be measured experimentally using a calorimeter. The heat transferred, q, is calculated from the mass of the solution or water, its specific heat capacity, and the temperature change: q = m c ΔT.
For a simple coffee-cup calorimeter under constant pressure, ΔH = –q/n, where n is the number of moles of the limiting reactant. Common sources of error include heat loss to the surroundings, incomplete combustion, and the heat capacity of the calorimeter itself.
In bomb calorimetry, combustion occurs at constant volume, and the measured ΔU can be converted to ΔH using the relation ΔH = ΔU + ΔngasRT.
5. Hess's Law |
Hess's Law states that the total enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the route taken, provided the initial and final conditions are the same. This is a direct consequence of enthalpy being a state function.
Using Hess's Law, an unknown ΔH can be calculated by combining known enthalpy changes from formation, combustion, or other reactions. A common approach is to construct an enthalpy cycle or an energy level diagram.
For any reaction: ΔH° = Σ ΔfH°(products) – Σ ΔfH°(reactants)
6. Bond Enthalpies | 键焓
Bond enthalpy is the energy required to break one mole of a specific covalent bond in the gaseous state, averaged over a range of compounds. In bond-breaking, energy is absorbed (endothermic); in bond-making, energy is released (exothermic).
The approximate enthalpy change of a reaction can be estimated using mean bond enthalpies: ΔH = Σ (bonds broken) – Σ (bonds formed). This method is less accurate because mean bond enthalpies ignore the specific molecular environment.
7. Enthalpy of Formation and Combustion Calculations |
Standard enthalpies of formation are widely used to calculate reaction enthalpies via Hess's Law. When combustion data are available, the cycle is built around the common combustion products (CO₂, H₂O).
For example, to find ΔfH° of ethanol, you can use its ΔcH° together with the ΔcH° values of carbon and hydrogen. The cycle links the elements to the products via combustion, allowing the unknown formation enthalpy to be deduced.
8. Born-Haber Cycle (HL) |
The Born-Haber cycle is an application of Hess's Law to the formation of an ionic compound from its elements. It breaks the overall process into steps: atomisation of the metal and non-metal, ionisation energy, electron affinity, and lattice formation.
The lattice enthalpy (ΔLH°) is the enthalpy change when one mole of an ionic solid is formed from its gaseous ions. It is always exothermic and its magnitude indicates the strength of the ionic bonding. The cycle allows ΔLH° to be calculated from experimental data when direct measurement is impossible.
ΔfH° = Σ(atomisation energies) + IE + EA + ΔLH°
9. Entropy (ΔS) | 熵
Entropy, S, is a measure of the dispersal of energy and the disorder or randomness of a system. The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy of the universe always increases for a spontaneous process: ΔSuniverse > 0.
Entropy increases when a solid melts, a liquid vaporises, or the number of gaseous molecules increases in a reaction. Standard molar entropies (S°) of gases are generally much larger than those of solids.
10. Gibbs Free Energy and Spontaneity |
The Gibbs free energy change, ΔG, determines whether a reaction is thermodynamically feasible at constant temperature and pressure. It combines enthalpy and entropy: ΔG° = ΔH° – TΔS°, where T is the temperature in kelvin.
A reaction is spontaneous (feasible) when ΔG° < 0. The effect of temperature can be analysed via the sign of ΔH° and ΔS°:
- ΔH° < 0 and ΔS° > 0 ⇒ ΔG° always negative; reaction feasible at all temperatures.
- ΔH° > 0 and ΔS° < 0 ⇒ ΔG° always positive; reaction never feasible.
- ΔH° > 0 and ΔS° > 0 ⇒ ΔG° negative only at high T.
- ΔH° < 0 and ΔS° < 0 ⇒ ΔG° negative only at low T.
e temperature at which a reaction becomes feasible can be found by setting ΔG° = 0, giving T = ΔH°/ΔS°.
11. Linking ΔG° to Equilibrium | ΔG°
There is a direct relationship between the standard Gibbs free energy change and the equilibrium constant K: ΔG° = –RT ln K. When ΔG° is very negative, K ≫ 1 and the position of equilibrium lies to the right; when ΔG° is very positive, K ≪ 1 and the equilibrium favours reactants.
This equation helps to explain why some exothermic reactions do not go to completion – they have a small positive ΔS° that makes ΔG° only slightly negative, resulting in a moderate K value.
12. Key Equations Summary |
Mastering energetics requires fluency with a compact set of equations:
q = m c ΔT ΔH = –q/n ΔH° = ΣΔfH°(prod) – ΣΔfH°(react)
ΔH = Σ(bonds broken) – Σ(bonds formed)
ΔG° = ΔH° – TΔS° ΔG° = –RT ln K ΔSuniv = ΔSsys + ΔSsurr > 0
Consistent unit practice (kJ mol⁻¹ for ΔH, J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹ for S, temperature in K) is essential to avoid calculation errors in IB and Cambridge examinations.
