📚 Chemical Bonding and Structure |
Chemical bonding is at the heart of chemistry, explaining why atoms combine to form the vast array of substances around us. The type of bonding - ionic, covalent, or metallic - determines the structure and properties of a material, from its melting point to its electrical conductivity. Understanding bonding models allows us to predict and explain the behaviour of elements and compounds.
1. Introduction to Chemical Bonding |
Atoms bond to achieve a more stable electron configuration, often a full outer shell like the noble gases. Metals tend to lose electrons to form cations, while non-metals gain electrons to form anions. This drive for stability leads to the formation of three primary bonding types: ionic, covalent, and metallic, each arising from different combinations of elements and electron behaviour.
In ionic bonding, electrons are transferred; in covalent bonding, electrons are shared; in metallic bonding, electrons are delocalised across a lattice of positive ions. These models help explain the vast diversity of material properties, from the brittleness of salt to the conduction of copper and the hardness of diamond.
2. Ionic Bonding | 离子键
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals. The metal atom loses electrons to become a positively charged cation, while the non-metal atom gains those electrons to become a negatively charged anion. The oppositely charged ions are held together by strong electrostatic forces in a giant ionic lattice, extending in all three dimensions.
The formula of an ionic compound shows the simplest ratio of ions. For example, in sodium chloride (NaCl), each Na⁺ ion is surrounded by six Cl⁻ ions, and vice versa, giving a 1:1 ratio. In magnesium oxide (MgO), the ions are Mg²⁺ and O²⁻, while calcium fluoride (CaF₂) contains Ca²⁺ and F⁻ in a 1:2 ratio to balance charges.
3. Covalent Bonding | 共价键
Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms. Each atom contributes one or more electrons to the shared pair, which is attracted to the nuclei of both atoms, holding them together. This type of bonding leads to the formation of molecules or giant covalent structures.
has two shared pairs (e.g., O=O in O₂), and a triple bond has three shared pairs (e.g., N≡ ry: triple bonds are the strongest and shortest, while single bonds are longer and weaker.
4. Metallic Bonding | 金属键
Metallic bonding occurs between metal atoms. The valence electrons become delocalised and are free to move throughout the lattice, forming a 'sea of electrons' that holds the positive metal ions together. This model explains why metals are good conductors of electricity and heat, as the mobile electrons can carry charge and energy rapidly.
Metals are also malleable and ductile--when a force is applied, layers of ions can slide over each other without breaking the metallic bonding, as the sea of electrons continually surrounds the ions. This contrasts with ionic solids, which shatter when layers are displaced.
5. Electronegativity and Bond Polarity |
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons in a
