📚 The Mole Concept |
The mole is the bridge between the invisible world of atoms and the measurable quantities we work with in the laboratory. Understanding this central concept is essential for quantitative chemistry. It allows chemists to count particles by weighing, to predict yields, and to scale reactions with precision. In the IB Chemistry course, the mole concept underpins stoichiometry, gas calculations, concentration and titrations, making it one of the most fundamental topics you will encounter.
1. Introduction to the Mole Concept |
In everyday life, we use familiar counting words like a 'pair' (2) or a 'dozen' (12) to group items. In chemistry, because atoms and molecules are incredibly tiny, we use a much larger grouping called a mole. One mole of any substance contains the same number of specified particles as there are atoms in exactly 12 g of carbon-12. This number is known as the Avogadro constant.
The word 'mole' comes from the Latin word for 'heap' or 'pile', and the symbol for amount of substance is n. The mole is the SI unit for amount of substance and allows chemists to connect the mass of a sample directly to the number of atoms, molecules or ions it contains. Whether you are dealing with solid iron, liquid water or carbon dioxide gas, the mole provides a universal way to compare quantities.
2. Avogadro's Constant and the Definition of the Mole |
Avogadro's constant, given the symbol L or Nᴀ of that species. The relationship between number of particles N and amount n is: N = n × Nᴀ quation is central to translating between the particulate world and the macroscopic world.
s often require students to calculate the number of atoms in a given mass of an element or compound by first finding n and then using Nᴀ.
3. Molar Mass and Relative Masses |
Relative atomic mass Aᵣ is the weighted average mass of an atom of an element compared with 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12. It has no units. The molar mass M of an element or compound is the mass of one mole of that substance, expressed in g mol⁻¹. The numerical value of M is equal to the relative atomic mass Aᵣ or relative molecular mass Mᵣ.
remember that diatomic gases such as O₂ and Cl₂ have M = 2 × Aᵣ, not the single atom mass.
4. Calculating Amount of Substance (n) |
The fundamental formula linking mass m, molar mass M and amount n is:
n = m ÷ M
n = m ÷ M
molar mass is in g mol⁻¹. For example, what is the amount of substance in 9.01 g of water? hree-variable relationship underpins almost every quantitative problem in the IB syllabus.
Another key equation connects amount and number of particles: n = N / Nᴀ es, or how many electrons are involved in electrolysis. Combining n = m / M with N = n × Nᴀ allows you to calculate the number of atoms in a given mass of any substance.
5. Empirical and Molecular Formulas |
The empirical formula gives the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound, while the molecular formula shows the actual number of atoms of each element in one molecule. For many substances, the empirical and molecular formulas are the same, but not always. Glucose, with molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₆, has an empirical formula CH₂O.
Determining the empirical formula typically involves these steps: convert the mass (or percentage composition) of each element to moles by dividing by relative atomic mass; divide all mole values by the smallest number of moles to obtain the simplest ratio; and if necessary, multiply to clear fractions. A common IB problem gives percentage composition data and then asks for the molecular formula using the compound's molar mass.
| Compound | Empirical Formula | Molecular Formula |
| Ethane | CH₃ | C₂H₆ |
| Benzene | CH | C₆H₆ |
| Hydrogen peroxide | HO | H₂O₂ |
mula NO₂ and Mᵣ = 92.0 has multiplier = 92.0 / 46.0 = 2, so the molecular formula is N₂O₄.
6. Molar Volume of a Gas |
. Note that in older specifications you might see 22.4 dm³ mol⁻¹ at 101.3 kPa, but the IB standard is consistently 22.7 dm³ mol⁻¹.
The amount of gas can be calculated from its volume using:
n = V / Vₘ
n = V / Vₘ
For example, what amount of CO₂ is present in 3.00 dm³ of gas at STP? ffer from STP, the ideal gas equation pV = nRT should be used, where R = 8.31 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹.
7. Concentration and Molarity |
In solution chemistry, the concentration of a solute is usually expressed as molarity, symbol c, with units mol dm⁻³. The relationship between amount of solute n, concentration c and volume V (in dm³) is:
n = c × V
n = c × V
50 × 58.5 = 1.46 g. Dilution problems also rely on the conservation of moles: c₁V₁ = c₂V₂.
cV is essential for obtaining correct results on the IA and Paper 2 questions. Students should practise unit conversions until they become automatic.
8. Stoichiometric Relationships |
ethane: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O, the ratio is 1 mol CH₄ : 2 mol O₂ : 1 mol CO₂ : 2 mol H₂O.
ratios. For example, how many grams of water are produced when 4.00 g of methane is burned? mol CH₄ produces 2 mol H₂O, so n(H₂O) = 0.498 mol; mass of water = 0.498 × 18.02 = 8.98 g.
Stoichiometry also applies to gas volumes: using the same equation, 1 volume of methane reacts with 2 volumes of oxygen, producing 1 volume of carbon dioxide (all measured at the same temperature and pressure). This is a direct consequence of Avogadro's law and simplifies gas reaction calculations considerably.
9. Limiting and Excess Reactants |
In many real reactions, one reactant is used up before the others, stopping the reaction. This is the limiting reactant, while the other reactants are in excess. The amount of product formed depends entirely on the limiting reactant. To identify the limiting reactant, calculate the amount of each reactant and compare the mole ratio to the balanced equation.
le, Mg is the limiting reactant. The mass of MgO formed = 0.0823 × (24.31+16.00) = 3.32 g.
n(Mg) = 2.00/24.31 = 0.0823 mol;n(O₂) = 2.00/32.00 = 0.0625 mol。
Recognising the limiting reactant is also vital in industrial contexts to minimise waste and cost. In IB questions, you will often be asked to state which reactant is in excess and by how many moles, and to calculate the mass of product.
10. Percentage Yield and Atom Economy |
In practice, most reactions do not give the full theoretical amount of product. The percentage yield compares the actual amount of product obtained to the theoretical yield calculated from stoichiometry:
% yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100
Atom economy, by contrast, evaluates the efficiency of a reaction pathway based on how much of the starting materials are incorporated into the desired product:
atom economy = (molar mass of desired product / total molar mass of all reactants) × 100
High atom economy is desirable for green chemistry as it reduces waste. Both concepts rely heavily on correct mole calculations. A common source of error is confusing actual mass with theoretical mass or forgetting to convert all masses to amounts before comparing.
11. Titration Calculations |
Acid–base titrations are classic experiments where the mole concept is applied directly. A solution of known concentration (standard solution) is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution by neutralising it until the equivalence point is reached. The key steps are: write the balanced equation; calculate the moles of the known substance; use the mole ratio to find moles of
