📚 R1.2 Energy cycles in reactions |
Energy changes are at the heart of chemical reactions. Understanding how to measure and calculate the enthalpy change (ΔH) allows chemists to predict whether a reaction will release or absorb heat. In IB Chemistry Topic R1.2, we explore energy cycles, Hess's law, and the use of standard enthalpy changes of formation, combustion, and bond enthalpies to determine unknown ΔH values.
1. Enthalpy and Enthalpy Change |
for a reaction is the heat absorbed or released under constant pressure. ΔH = H(products) – ion (releases heat), while a positive ΔH indicates an endothermic reaction (absorbs heat).
ΔH = H(生成物) – H(反应物)。
2. Standard Enthalpy Changes (ΔH°) |
Standard conditions are defined as a pressure of 100 kPa and a specified temperature, usually 298 K (25 °C). The standard enthalpy change of reaction (ΔHr°) refers to the enthalpy change when reactants in their standard states react to form products in their standard states, measured under standard conditions. Standard states refer to the most stable physical form of a substance at 100 kPa and 298 K, e.g., H2O(l), C(s, graphite), O2(g).
Key standard enthalpy changes include: standard enthalpy of formation (ΔHf°) — the enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states; standard enthalpy of combustion (ΔHc°) — the enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burned in oxygen under standard conditions; and standard enthalpy of neutralization (ΔHneut°) — the enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed from the reaction between an acid and a base under standard conditions.
3. Hess's Law |
Hess's Law states that the total enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the pathway taken, provided the initial and final states are the same. This is a consequence of the law of conservation of energy. Thus, if a reaction can be expressed as the sum of two or more steps, the overall ΔH is the sum of the ΔH values for each step.
For instance, if we want to find the ΔH for the reaction C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g), we can either react them directly,
