📚 S2.3 The metallic model | S2.3
In IB Chemistry, the metallic model provides the foundation for understanding how metal atoms bond together and why metals exhibit such distinctive properties—electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability, ductility and lustre. This model pictures a regular lattice of positive metal ions immersed in a mobile ‘sea’ of delocalised valence electrons. The electrostatic attraction between the cations and the electron sea constitutes the metallic bond. In this article we will explore the electron-sea model, the factors that govern metallic bond strength, the trends in melting points, and the special role of alloys in modifying metallic behaviour.
1. What is the Metallic Model? |
The metallic model describes the structure and bonding in metals. In a solid piece of metal, the atoms release their outer-shell (valence) electrons into a common pool. The remaining parts of the atoms become positively charged ions (cations), which arrange themselves in a closely packed, regular three-dimensional lattice. The delocalised electrons are free to move throughout the entire lattice and are not attached to any particular cation. The whole structure is held together by the electrostatic attraction between the lattice of positive ions and the surrounding sea of negative electrons.
2. The Electron Sea Model |
The electron sea model is the simplest visualisation of metallic bonding. Picture a lattice of Na⁺ ions in sodium metal, each having lost one valence electron. Those electrons become delocalised and move randomly among the ions, behaving like a fluid of negative charge. This delocalisation means the electrons are shared collectively by all the ions, not localised in individual bonds. Because the electrons are mobile, the metallic bond is non-directional; a cation can shift its position without breaking a specific bond, which is the key to understanding malleability.
3. Electrostatic Attraction in Metallic Bonding |
A metallic bond may be defined as the electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and the delocalised electrons. The strength of this attraction depends on two main factors: the magnitude of the positive charge on the metal ion and the size (ionic radius) of the ion. A higher charge density—meaning a larger charge concentrated on a smaller ion—leads to a stronger attraction to the electron sea. Conversely, larger ions with lower charge produce weaker metallic bonds.
4. Factors Affecting Metallic Bond Strength |
The following table illustrates how ionic charge and radius affect the strength of metallic bonding across sodium, magnesium and aluminium. These three metals all have a giant metallic lattice structure, but their melting points increase significantly from Na to Al because the cations increase in charge from +1 to +3 while the ionic radius decreases.
| Metal | Cation | Ionic charge | Approx. ionic radius / pm | Melting point / °C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium (Na) | Na⁺ | +1 | 102 | 98 |
| Magnesium (Mg) | Mg²⁺ | +2 | 72 | 650 |
| Aluminium (Al) | Al³⁺ | +3 | 54 | 660 |
The trends are clear: as the ionic charge increases and the ionic radius decreases, the attraction between the cations and the delocalised electrons becomes stronger, requiring more energy to overcome—hence the higher melting point.
5. Melting Points of Metals |
Melting points of metals show a general correlation with the strength of the metallic bond. Group 1 metals (alkali metals) have only one valence electron per atom and form +1 ions with relatively large radii, so their metallic bonds are weak and melting points low. Across a period, from Group 1 to Group 13, the charge on the cation increases and the ionic radius decreases, giving a steep rise in melting points. Transition metals, such as iron and copper, are characterised by very high melting points because they can release electrons from both the 4s and 3d subshells, producing ions with higher effective charges and relatively small radii—hence exceptionally strong metallic bonding.
6. Electrical Conductivity | 导电性
Metals are excellent electrical conductors because the delocalised electrons can flow through the lattice when a potential difference is applied. The electron sea model explains this simply: the electrons are already mobile; an electric field merely imposes a net drift on their random motion. Since the electrons do not belong to any particular ion, they can carry charge from one end of the metal to the other without disrupting the lattice. In contrast, ionic compounds conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved because their ions are fixed in the solid lattice.
7. Thermal Conductivity | 导热性
The same mobile electrons are responsible for the high thermal conductivity of metals. When one part of a metal is heated, the electrons gain kinetic energy and move more rapidly. These energetic electrons travel through the lattice and collide with other electrons and with cations, transferring kinetic energy throughout the structure very efficiently. This process is much faster than the lattice vibrations (phonons) that transmit heat in insulators, which is why metals feel cold to the touch when we quickly draw heat away from the skin.
8. Malleability and Ductility |
Malleability (ability to be hammered into sheets) and ductility (ability to be drawn into wires) are classic metallic properties that arise from the non-directional nature of the metallic bond. When a force is applied, layers of cations can slide past one another. The delocalised electron sea immediately adjusts to the new positions, continuing to hold the cations together. No specific bonds are broken because the electrons are not localised. This is very different from an ionic crystal, where sliding layers bring ions of the same charge opposite each other, causing repulsion and the crystal to shatter.
9. Lustre and Other Properties |
Metals typically have a shiny, reflective surface because the delocalised electrons can absorb and re-emit photons of many wavelengths. When light strikes a metal, the electron sea oscillates and re-radiates the light, giving the characteristic metallic lustre. Metals are also opaque to visible light and often produce a ringing sound when struck (sonority), again related to the tightly packed lattice and the ability of cations to transmit vibrations efficiently without breaking bonds.
10. Alloys: Definition and Types |
An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals, or a metal with a non-metal (such as carbon), which has been designed to enhance certain properties. Common examples include steel (iron with a small percentage of carbon), brass (copper and zinc) and bronze (copper and tin). Alloys can be classified as substitutional alloys, where the atoms of the added metal replace some of the host metal atoms in the lattice, or interstitial alloys, where smaller atoms (like carbon) fit into the spaces (interstices) between the larger metal atoms.
11. Why Alloys Are Stronger |
Pure metals are often too soft for many practical applications because the regular layers of identical ions can slide easily. In an alloy, the introduction of atoms of a different size distorts the regular lattice. This distortion hinders the movement of cation layers over one another, making it more difficult for the layers to slide. The electron sea still holds the structure together, but the irregular lattice impedes slip, thereby increasing hardness and strength. This is why steel (iron with interstitial carbon) is far harder than pure iron, and why brass is stronger than pure copper.
12. Comparison with Ionic and Covalent Solids |
It is helpful to contrast the metallic model with other giant structures. The table below summarises key differences in bonding, structural units and typical properties.
| Property | Giant metallic (e.g. Cu) | Giant ionic (e.g. NaCl) | Giant covalent (e.g. diamond) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonding type | Electrostatic attraction between cations and delocalised electrons | Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions | Strong covalent bonds between atoms throughout the lattice |
| Structural units | Positive ions in a sea of electrons | Positive and negative ions alternating in a lattice | Atoms connected by a network of covalent bonds |
| Melting / boiling point | Generally high (wide range) | High | Very high |
| Conducts electricity? | Yes, as solid and liquid | Only when molten or dissolved | No (except graphite) |
| Malleable / ductile? | Yes | No—brittle | No—hard and brittle |
The metallic model is unique in having delocalised electrons that remain freely mobile in the solid state, giving metals their characteristic conductivity and mechanical flexibility. This understanding is central to the IB syllabus and provides a powerful tool for predicting and explaining the behaviour of metals and alloys.
