📚 E.5 Fusion and Stars | E.5
Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the stars, converting mass into energy according to Einstein's famous equation. In the dense, hot cores of stars, light nuclei overcome Coulomb repulsion and fuse, releasing enormous amounts of energy that sustain the star against gravitational collapse. Understanding fusion not only unlocks the secrets of stellar structure and evolution but also provides insight into the life cycles of stars, from their birth in nebulae to their final fates as white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes. In the IB Physics syllabus, the topic E.5 brings together ideas from atomic and nuclear physics with astrophysical observation, offering a coherent picture of how fusion governs the observable universe.
1. The Principle of Nuclear Fusion |
Nuclear fusion occurs when two light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy in the process. The most common example is the fusion of hydrogen isotopes. For fusion to occur, the nuclei must overcome the electrostatic repulsion between their positively charged protons. This requires extremely high temperatures (on the order of 10⁷ K) and pressures, conditions that are found in the cores of stars. At such temperatures, matter exists as a fully ionised plasma, and nuclei have sufficient kinetic energy to tunnel through the Coulomb barrier via quantum mechanical effects.
2. The Energy Source of Stars |
A star is a self-gravitating sphere of plasma, where the inward pull of gravity is balanced by the outward pressure generated by nuclear fusion in the core. This condition, known as hydrostatic equilibrium, determines the stability and luminosity of the star. Without fusion, a star would collapse under its own weight and cool rapidly. The energy produced by fusion reactions diffuses outward through the radiative and convective zones over thousands of years before finally being emitted as electromagnetic radiation from the star's surface, or photosphere.
3. Mass–Energy Equivalence and Binding Energy |
tes from the mass difference between the reactants and the products. According to Einstein' otal mass of the products is slightly less than the total mass of the initial nuclei; this 'missing' can also be understood in terms of nuclear binding energy: the binding energy per nucleon increases for nuclei up to iron-56, meaning that fusing nuclei lighter than iron releases energy. The peak of the binding energy curve explains why fusion is exothermic for light elements, while fission is exothermic for heavy elements.
ΔE = Δm c²
4. The Proton–Proton Chain (p–p chain) |
In stars like the Sun, the dominant fusion process is the proton–proton chain. This sequence of reactions converts four protons (hydrogen nuclei) into a helium-4 nucleus, releasing energy in the form of gamma rays, positrons, and neutrinos. The overall reaction can be summarised as:
4 ¹H → ⁴He + 2 e⁺ + 2 νₑ + 26.73 MeV
The chain has several branches, but the most important steps in the ppI branch are: (1) two protons fuse to form deuterium, emitting a positron and a neutrino; (2) deuterium captures another proton to form helium-3, releasing a gamma photon; (3) two helium-3 nuclei merge to produce helium-4 and two protons. The positrons annihilate with electrons, producing further gamma radiation. Neutrinos escape the star almost unimpeded, carrying away a small fraction of the energy.
5. The CNO Cycle | CNO 循环
2 is regenerated at the end. The CNO cycle is highly temperature-dependent (with a rate proportional to T¹⁷ near typical core temperatures), which makes it dominate in hotter, more massive stars where core temperatures exceed 2 × 10⁷ K. The net result is again the conversion of four protons into a helium-4 nucleus, two positrons, two neutrinos, and energy.
6. Stellar Properties: Luminosity and Temperature |
is the total power it radiates into space, measured in watts. It depends on both the star's radius and its surface temperature according to the Stefan–Boltzmann law: L = 4πR²σT⁴, where σ is the Stefan– er stars appearing blue-white and cooler stars appearing red. Astronomers can infer a star's temperature from its spectrum by applying Wien' displacement law: λₘₐₓ T = 2.9 × 10⁻³ m·K, where λₘₐₓ is the wavelength of peak emission.
7. Apparent Magnitude and Absolute Magnitude |
The brightness of a star as observed from Earth is described by its apparent magnitude, m. This is a logarithmic scale where a difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a factor of 100 in brightness. The absolute magnitude, M, is the apparent magnitude a star would have if it were placed at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years). The relationship between apparent magnitude, absolute magnitude, and distance d (in parsecs) is given by the distance modulus formula:
m − M = 5 log(d / 10)
Knowing both magnitudes allows astronomers to calculate the distance to stars and compare their intrinsic luminosities, independent of distance.
8. The Hertzsprung–Russell (H–R) Diagram |
The Hertzsprung–Russell diagram is a fundamental tool in stellar astrophysics that plots stellar luminosity (or absolute magnitude) against surface temperature (or spectral class). Most stars, including the Sun, lie on the main sequence, a diagonal band extending from hot, luminous stars to cool, dim stars. The position of a star on the main sequence is determined by its mass. Giants and supergiants appear above the main sequence, while white dwarfs lie below it. The H–R diagram allows astronomers to track the evolutionary paths of stars and to understand how they change in luminosity and temperature as they exhaust their nuclear fuel.
9. Life Cycle of Low-Mass Stars |
Stars with masses comparable to the Sun spend most of their lives on the main sequence fusing hydrogen into helium. Once the core hydrogen is exhausted, the core contracts and heats up, while hydrogen shell burning begins around the core. The outer layers expand and cool, and the star becomes a red giant. In the core, helium eventually ignites in the 'helium flash' and fuses into carbon and oxygen. When helium is depleted, the star sheds its outer layers as a planetary nebula, leaving behind a dense, hot core known as a white dwarf. The white dwarf has no further fusion reactions and will gradually cool and fade over billions of years.
10. Life Cycle of High-Mass Stars |
For stars more than about 8 solar masses, the evolution is more violent and proceeds faster. After hydrogen and helium burning, the high core temperatures allow successive stages of fusion of heavier elements: carbon, neon, oxygen, and silicon, until an iron core is formed. Iron has the highest binding energy per nucleon, so fusion of iron does not release energy; the core becomes inert. With no energy source to support it, the iron core collapses under gravity, triggering a colossal supernova explosion. During the supernova, elements heavier than iron are synthesised through rapid neutron capture (the r-process) and scattered into space, enriching the interstellar medium.
11. Remnants: White Dwarfs, Neutron Stars and Black Holes |
The final fate of a star depends on its initial mass. Stars up to about 8 solar masses end as white dwarfs, supported by electron degeneracy pressure, with a maximum mass limit of 1.44 solar masses (the Chandrasekhar limit). Stars between 8 and about 25 solar masses leave behind neutron stars, in which neutron degeneracy pressure halts further collapse. A typical neutron star has a radius of about 10 km and an extraordinarily high density. If the core mass exceeds the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff limit (roughly 2–3 solar masses), nothing can stop the collapse, and a black hole forms—a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
12. Fusion as a Potential Energy Source on Earth |
rth could provide a nearly limitless, clean energy supply. The most promising reaction for terrestrial fusion is the deuterium– 6 MeV. To achieve net energy gain, a plasma must satisfy the Lawson criterion, which requires a sufficiently high product of ion density and confinement time at a temperature around 10⁸ K. Current experimental reactors, such as tokamaks and stellarators, use powerful magnetic fields to confine the plasma. Inertial confinement is another approach, using intense laser beams to compress fuel pellets. Although significant scientific progress has been made, a commercial fusion power plant remains a long-term goal that illustrates the same physical principles at work in stellar interiors.
