📚 C.2 Wave Model | C.2
The wave model is a powerful framework in physics that describes how energy and information propagate through a medium or vacuum without the bulk transport of matter. From the ripples on a pond to the light from distant stars, the unified concepts of wavefronts, rays and the principle of superposition allow us to predict and explain reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference. In the IB Physics C.2 topic, students explore Huygens' principle as the fundamental mechanism behind wave propagation, and apply it to understand both classical optics and the behaviour of mechanical waves on strings and in air columns.
1. Wavefronts and Rays |
A wavefront is defined as a surface or line in two dimensions that connects all adjacent points vibrating in phase. For a point source in a uniform medium, wavefronts are spherical surfaces expanding outward; for a distant source, they can be approximated as parallel planes. A ray is an arrow drawn perpendicular to the wavefront, representing the direction of energy transfer. In diagrams, rays are straight lines that show the path along which the wave travels.
2. Huygens' Principle |
Huygens' principle states that every point on a primary wavefront acts as a source of secondary spherical wavelets that spread out in the forward direction at the speed of the wave. The envelope of all these wavelets after a short time interval forms the new wavefront. This construction explains how waves propagate around corners and why the shape of a wavefront can change even in a uniform medium. It also predicts the behaviour of waves when they encounter obstacles or openings.
3. Reflection of Waves Using the Wave Model |
When a wave strikes a flat reflecting surface, Huygens' on the surface emits secondary wavelets. By the time one end of the wavefront has been reflected, the tangent to the wavelets from the other end reconstructs the reflected wavefront at exactly the same angle. This is true for all types of waves — light, sound or water waves — and leads to the law θᵢ = θᵣ where both angles are measured relative to the normal.
θᵢ = θᵣ
4. Refraction of Waves Using the Wave Model |
aves cross a boundary between two media in which their speeds differ. According to Huygens' eed is lower, causing the wavefront to bend. The relationship between the angles of incidence and refraction and the wave speeds in the two media is given by Snell' s wave-based derivation shows that refraction is a natural consequence of the change in wave speed, not a separate optical rule.
n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂
5. Diffraction of Waves |
Diffraction is the spreading of waves as they pass through a narrow gap or around an obstacle. Huygens' principle provides a direct explanation: every point in the gap acts as a source of wavelets, and their superposition results in a curved wavefront beyond the opening. The amount of diffraction becomes significant when the wavelength is comparable to the size of the aperture or obstacle. If the gap is much larger than the wavelength, only the edges show slight bending; if the gap is very small, the emerging waves spread out in almost circular patterns.
6. Superposition and Interference |
The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves occupy the same space, the resultant displacement is the vector sum of the individual displacements. Interference refers to the pattern of reinforcement and cancellation that arises from superposition. Constructive interference occurs when waves are in phase and their amplitudes add; destructive interference occurs when they are completely out of phase. For sustained interference patterns, the sources must be coherent — meaning they maintain a constant phase relationship and have the same frequency.
uce waves, constructive interference occurs when the path difference Δx = mλ (m = 0, 1, 2, …), and destructive interference occurs when Δx = (m+½)λ.
Δx = mλ (constructive) ; Δx = (m+½)λ (destructive)
7. Young's Double-Slit Experiment |
Thomas Young' e bright fringes satisfy d sinθ = mλ, where d is the slit separation and m is the fringe order. The fringe separation Δy on a screen at distance D is given approximately by Δy = λD / d, allowing the wavelength to be measured.
d sinθ = mλ ; Δy = λD / d
8. Single-Slit Diffraction |
. The condition for a dark fringe is a sinθ = mλ, where a is the slit width and m = 1, 2, 3, … t fringes are not equally spaced and the intensity falls off rapidly away from the centre.
暗纹的条件是 a sinθ = mλ,其中 a 是缝宽,m = 1, 2, 3, …(不含 m=0)。
a sinθ = mλ (dark fringes, m = 1,2,3…)
9. Resolution and the Rayleigh Criterion |
e of diameter b, the angular resolution is given by θ = 1.22 λ / b. This criterion is crucial in telescope design, microscopy and satellite imaging, where larger apertures improve resolution.
θ = 1.22 λ / b
10. Standing Waves on Strings and in Pipes |
xist only when the length L is an integer multiple of half-wavelengths: L = nλ/2, with frequencies fₙ = n f₁ = n v / (2L). In a pipe open at both ends, the same harmonic series applies. For a pipe closed at one end, only odd harmonics are present: L = (2n−1)λ/4 and fₙ = (2n−1)v / (4L). End corrections account for the air slightly beyond the physical opening.
String: fₙ = n v / (2L) ; Open pipe: fₙ = n v / (2L) ; Closed pipe: fₙ = (2n−1)v / (4L)
11. The Unifying Wave Model Perspective |
The wave model provides a unified explanation for a vast range of phenomena — from the simple straight-line propagation of light to complex interference colours in thin films. By starting with Huygens' principle, one can derive Snell's law, understand diffraction patterns and even predict the resolving power of lenses. When applied to mechanical systems, the same mathematics describes vibrating strings and air columns. The superposition principle is the key to interference, standing waves and the entire field of wave optics. For IB Physics students, mastering C.2 means seeing waves not just as wiggles, but as a fundamental language of the universe.
