📚 A.1 Kinematics | 运动学
Kinematics is the branch of physics that describes the motion of objects without considering the forces that cause the motion. It establishes the mathematical framework for answering questions about position, displacement, velocity, and acceleration. In the IB Physics syllabus, A.1 Kinematics builds the essential vocabulary and tools needed to analyse motion in one and two dimensions, paving the way for more advanced topics such as dynamics and energy.
1. What is Kinematics? |
Kinematics focuses purely on the 'how' of motion — where an object is, how fast it is moving, and how its velocity changes over time. It deliberately separates itself from dynamics, which asks 'why' motion occurs by studying forces. A key idea in kinematics is that all motion is relative; we must define a frame of reference when describing position and velocity.
2. Scalar and Vector Quantities in Motion |
In kinematics we distinguish between scalar quantities, which have magnitude only, and vector quantities, which have both magnitude and direction. Distance is the total path length travelled, a scalar, while displacement is the straight-line change in position, a vector. Similarly, speed is a scalar and velocity is a vector. Understanding this distinction is critical for correctly describing and calculating motion.
Vectors are usually represented by arrows where the length indicates magnitude and the arrowhead indicates direction. Vector addition follows the tip-to-tail rule, and a vector can be resolved into perpendicular components using trigonometry. This component approach is especially useful in two-dimensional motion.
3. Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration |
Displacement Δx is defined as the change in position: Δx = xfinal - x_initial. It is a vector. Average velocity vavg is displacement divided by the time interval Δt. Instantaneous velocity is the gradient of a displacement–time graph, or mathematically the limit of average velocity as Δt approaches zero. In IB notation we often write v for instantaneous velocity.
Acceleration a describes how quickly velocity changes. Average acceleration is aavg = Δv / Δt. Instantaneous acceleration is the gradient of a velocity– is also a vector; a change in speed or a change in direction both constitute acceleration.
4. Uniformly Accelerated Motion and the SUVAT Equations | 匀加速运动与SUVAT方程
When an object moves in a straight line with constant acceleration, its motion can be described by four interrelated equations, known as the SUVAT equations. They link displacement s, initial velocity u, final velocity v, constant acceleration a, and time t.
| Equation | Missing quantity |
|---|---|---|
| v = u + a t | s | v = u + a t |
| s = u t + ½ a t² | v | s = u t + ½ a t² |
| s = ½ (u + v) t | a | s = ½ (u + v) t |
| v² = u² + 2 a s | t | v² = u² + 2 a s |
These equations apply only when acceleration is constant and motion is along a straight line. It is essential to choose a sign convention: typically, one direction is taken as positive, and all vector quantities are assigned positive or negative signs accordingly.
5. Graphs of Motion |
Graphs provide a powerful visual tool for analysing kinematic behaviour. The three most important graphs are displacement–time (s–t), velocity–time (v–t) and acceleration–time (a–t). The gradient of an s–t graph gives velocity; the gradient of a v–t graph gives acceleration; and the area under a v–t graph gives displacement. Similarly, the area under an a–t graph gives the change in velocity.
For uniform acceleration, the s–t graph is a parabola, the v–t graph is a straight line with constant gradient, and the a–t graph is a horizontal line. Learning to switch between these graphs and interpret their features is a key skill in IB kinematics.
6. Free Fall and the Acceleration due to Gravity |
ling solely under the influence of gravity, with negligible air resistance. Near the Earth' the SUVAT equations apply directly with a = g or a = -g depending on the sign convention.
en downward is positive. Free fall problems often involve finding time of flight, final velocity or total displacement.
7. Projectile Motion |
ly, the motion is uniformly accelerated with acceleration aᵧ = -g (if upward is positive).
For a projectile launched with speed u at an angle θ to the horizontal:
vₓ = u cosθ, x = u cosθ t
vᵧ = u sinθ - g t, y = u sinθ t - ½ g t²
The time of flight, maximum height H, and horizontal range R are given by:
R = (u² sin2θ) / g, H = (u² sin²θ) / (2g)
These formulas assume launch and landing at the same vertical height. Air resistance is ignored in this idealised model.
8. Relative Velocity |
The velocity of an object depends on the observer's frame of reference. The relative velocity of object A with respect to object B is vAB = vA - vB, where vA and vB are velocities measured in the same reference frame. This vector subtraction can be performed in one or two dimensions.
For example, a boat crossing a river experiences a resultant velocity that is the vector sum of its own velocity relative to the water and the river current's velocity relative to the bank. Understanding relative velocity helps solve problems involving moving walkways, aircraft in wind and boats in currents.
9. Problem-Solving Strategies for Kinematics |
Successful kinematic problem solving begins with a clear diagram showing the initial situation, coordinate axes and sign convention. Identify the known quantities (u, v, a, s, t) and the unknown you need to find. Select the SUVAT equation that contains only one unknown. For projectile motion, treat horizontal and vertical motions separately and link them through the common time t.
Always check that your answer makes physical sense. Verify units, sign convention, and whether the motion model (constant acceleration, negligible air resistance) is appropriate for the situation. Practising with a variety of problems — from falling objects to angled projectiles — builds confidence and deepens conceptual understanding.
