📚 B.1 Thermal Energy Transfers |
Thermal energy transfers are fundamental to understanding how energy moves between objects and systems due to temperature differences. In IB Physics Topic B.1, we explore the microscopic and macroscopic descriptions of heat, temperature, internal energy, and the mechanisms of conduction, convection, and radiation. The study also extends to blackbody radiation, Stefan–Boltzmann law, Wien's displacement law, and the greenhouse effect – all essential for explaining climate physics, engineering, and everyday phenomena.
1. Temperature, Heat and Internal Energy |
Temperature is a measure of the average random kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. It is a scalar quantity and is measured in kelvin (K) in the SI system, where 0 K represents absolute zero. Heat, on the other hand, is the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter body to a colder one, driven purely by the temperature difference. Heat is not a property stored inside an object; it is energy in transit, measured in joules (J).
The internal energy of a system is the sum of the total random kinetic energy of its constituent particles and the total potential energy arising from inter-particle forces. During a temperature change with no phase change, the kinetic part changes. During phase changes (melting, boiling), the potential energy part changes while the temperature remains constant.
2. Thermal Equilibrium and the Zeroth Law |
When two objects at different temperatures are placed in thermal contact, energy transfers from the hotter to the colder until they reach the same temperature. This state is called thermal equilibrium. The zeroth law of thermodynamics formalises this: if systems A and B are each in thermal equilibrium with system C, then A and B are in thermal equilibrium with each other. This law justifies the use of thermometers.
A thermometer works by having a physical property – such as the volume of a liquid, electrical resistance, or the pressure of a gas – that varies predictably with temperature. To be meaningful, a temperature scale requires two fixed points, such as the triple point of water (273.16 K) and absolute zero, or the ice point and steam point in Celsius scale.
3. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容
The specific heat capacity, c, of a material is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the substance by 1 K without a change of state. It is a measure of how much a substance resists temperature change. The relationship is given by:
Q = mcΔT
where Q is the thermal energy transferred (J), m is the mass (kg), c is the specific heat capacity (J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹), and ΔT is the temperature change. An experimental determination of c often uses a calorimeter with electrical heating or mixing, applying energy conservation to account for heat losses.
K⁻¹), can absorb a lot of energy with only a small temperature rise, making water an excellent coolant and climate moderator. Metals have relatively low specific heat capacities, so they heat up and cool down quickly.
4. Specific Latent Heat |
When a substance changes phase at constant temperature, energy is absorbed or released without a change in kinetic energy of the particles; instead, the potential energy changes as inter-particle bonds break or form. The specific latent heat, L, is the energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance at constant temperature:
Q = mL
There are two types: specific latent heat of fusion (melting/freezing, Lf) and specific latent heat of vaporisation (boiling/condensing, Lv). For water, Lf ≈ 3.34 × 10⁵ J kg⁻¹ and Lv ue for vaporisation reflects the complete breaking of molecular bonds required to separate molecules into a gas.
During a heating curve for a solid converting to liquid and then to gas, temperature remains constant during phase changes, reflecting the latent heat absorption. Real-world applications include the high energy required to vaporise water, which is why sweating effectively cools the body.
5. Conduction and Convection |
Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material without bulk movement of the material itself. It occurs primarily in solids and is due to the vibration and collision of particles and, in metals, the diffusion of free electrons. The rate of conduction Q/Δt through a uniform bar is given by:
Q/Δt = kA (ΔT)/d
where k is the thermal conductivity (W m⁻¹ K⁻¹), A is the cross-sectional area, ΔT is the temperature difference across length d. Materials with high k (like copper) are good conductors; those with low k (like polystyrene) are insulators.
Convection occurs in fluids (liquids and gases) where a hotter, less dense region rises due to buoyancy forces, carrying thermal energy with it. The sun-driven convection in the atmosphere and the mantle drives weather patterns and plate tectonics. Natural (free) convection is driven by density differences; forced convection uses pumps or fans.
The following table summarises key differences between conduction, convection, and radiation as transfer mechanisms:
| Property | Conduction | Convection | Radiation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium required? | Yes (solids mainly) | Yes (fluid) | No (can travel through vacuum) |
| Particle motion | Vibration and collision | Bulk movement of fluid | Electromagnetic waves |
| Speed | Slow | Moderate | Speed of light (in vacuum) |
6. Thermal Radiation and Blackbody Radiation |
All objects emit electromagnetic radiation due to the thermal motion of their charged particles. This radiation can travel through a vacuum. The spectrum and intensity depend on the temperature and the surface properties of the object. A perfect blackbody is an idealised object that absorbs all incident radiation and, when in thermal equilibrium, emits the maximum possible radiation at every wavelength for a given temperature.
al surfaces have an emissivity ε (0 < ε ≤ 1), where ε = 1 corresponds to a perfect blackbody.
7. Stefan–Boltzmann Law |
The Stefan–Boltzmann law states that the total power radiated per unit area from a blackbody is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature. For a blackbody of surface area A and temperature T:
P = σAT⁴
where σ = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴ is the Stefan– ergy: doubling the temperature increases radiated power by a factor of 16 (since 2⁴ = 16).
In IB problems, the law is often used to determine the equilibrium temperature of an object that absorbs and emits radiation simultaneously, such as a satellite in space or a planet. The net power radiated is Pnet = εσA (Tobj⁴ – Tenv⁴), assuming the surroundings behave as a blackbody.
8. Wien's Displacement Law |
Wien's displacement law links the peak wavelength λₘₐₓ of the blackbody radiation spectrum to the absolute temperature:
λₘₐₓ T = 2.898 × 10⁻³ m·K
nm, corresponding to the green-yellow part of the spectrum, which is why it appears white.
By measuring the peak wavelength of a star, astronomers can estimate its surface temperature. Conversely, the temperature of a filament in an incandescent bulb can be inferred from its colour. The law is a direct consequence of the Planck radiation law and the behaviour of the spectral radiance maximum.
9. The Greenhouse Effect |
The greenhouse effect is a natural process in which certain gases in Earth's atmosphere (CO₂, H₂O vapour, CH₄) absorb outgoing infrared radiation emitted by the warmed surface, re-radiating some of it back down. The incoming solar radiation is primarily in the visible region (peak intensity around 500 nm), where the atmosphere is largely transparent. The Earth's surface warms up and re-emits in the far infrared (peak around 10 µm). Greenhouse gases are effective absorbers in this infrared region.
Without the natural greenhouse effect, Earth's average surface temperature would be about –18 °C rather than the current +15 °C. The enhanced greenhouse effect due to increased CO₂ and other emissions from human activities is causing global warming. Calculations using Stefan–Boltzmann law and radiative balance models illustrate that even small changes in greenhouse gas concentrations shift the equilibrium temperature.
The concept of emissivity is crucial: the atmosphere does not behave as a simple blackbody. A two-layer model helps students understand the energy fluxes: incoming solar radiation, reflected shortwave radiation, longwave radiation emitted by the surface, and atmospheric absorption and re-emission.
10. Applications and Energy Balances |
Understanding thermal energy transfers is essential in designing passive solar buildings, insulating materials, and cooling systems for electronics. Engineers use conduction, convection, and radiation principles to maximise or minimise heat flow. For example, double-glazed windows reduce conduction and convection, and the vacuum in a Thermos flask eliminates conduction and convection while silvered walls minimise radiation.
tate. For a satellite, the absorbed solar power (based on solar constant and cross-sectional area) equals the radiated power from the entire surface, leading to an equilibrium temperature that depends on absorptivity and emissivity.
Graphical analysis of heating and cooling curves, area under Planck curves, and temperature–time graphs are frequently assessed in IB Physics. Students should be able to interpret the slopes and plateaus in relation to specific heat capacity and latent heat, and calculate energy exchanges using the relevant equations.
