1. What is Work?
In physics, the word 'work' has a very precise meaning: work is done when a force moves an object in the direction of the force. If you push a stationary wall with all your might but it does not budge, you have done no work in the physics sense, even though you feel exhausted. For work to be done, there must be motion, and the motion must be along the line of the force. Crucially, work is a measure of energy transfer – doing work on an object transfers energy to it. The amount of work done is exactly equal to the amount of energy transferred. This is why both work and energy are measured in joules (J).
2. The Work Done Equation |
ce of 1 newton moves an object 1 metre in the direction of the force. Because work = force × distance, 1 J is equivalent to 1 N m. You can rearrange the equation to find force (F = W/d) or distance (d = W/F) if required. At GCSE, most problems assume the force acts in the direction of motion, so the full force is used.
W = F × d
3. Energy Transfer and Work | 能量转移与功
ntial energy store. If you push a box along a rough floor, you do work against friction, and the energy is transferred to the thermal energy store of the box and floor, making them slightly warmer. The golden rule is: work done = energy transferred. This equation forms a bridge between the ‘forces and motion’ topic and the ‘energy’ topic you study separately.
4. Kinetic Energy | 动能
is the mass in kilograms (kg) and v is the speed in metres per second (m/s). Notice that speed is squared. This means that if you double the speed of a car, its kinetic energy quadruples, not just doubles. This quadratic relationship explains why high-speed crashes are so much more destructive, and why braking distances increase dramatically as speed increases. For OCR GCSE, you will be asked to calculate kinetic energy, rearrange the equation to find mass or speed, or link kinetic energy to other forms through energy conservation.
Eₖ = ½ m v²
5. Gravitational Potential Energy |
An object lifted above the Earth' = m g h. In this formula, m is mass (kg), g is the gravitational field strength (on Earth ~ nergy is converted entirely into kinetic energy. You can often set Eₚ at the top equal to Eₖ at the bottom to solve for speed.
Eₚ = m g h
6. Elastic Potential Energy |
ompressed spring is given by: Eₑ = ½ k x². Here, k is the spring constant, measured in newtons per metre (N/m), which tells you how stiff the spring is – evices, or combined with other energy equations to find speeds after a spring is released.
Eₑ = ½ k x²
7. Conservation of Energy |
The law of conservation of energy is one of the most fundamental principles in physics. It states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred from one store to another. In any closed system (where no external forces transfer energy in or out), the total energy remains constant. Consider a pendulum swinging in a vacuum. At the highest point, the bob has maximum Eₚ and zero kinetic energy. As it swings downward, Eₚ decreases and Eₖ increases. At the lowest point, Eₚ is minimum (you may set it to zero there) and Eₖ is maximum. Throughout the cycle, the sum Eₚ + Eₖ remains unchanged. In real life, air resistance and friction gradually transfer mechanical energy to the thermal store of the surroundings, so total mechanical energy seems to decrease, but the total energy of the universe is still conserved.
8. Power | 功率
ime in seconds (s). One watt equals one joule per second (1 W = 1 J/s). You can rearrange this to find time or energy: W = P × t. This equation is often combined with the work done equation (W = F d) or with gravitational potential energy. For example, a motor lifting a mass at constant speed does work mgh in time t, so its power output is P = mgh / t. Make sure you use consistent units, especially if distances are given in centimetres or time in minutes.
P = W / t
9. Efficiency | 效率
No machine is perfect; during any energy transfer, some energy is always lost – ntage, is calculated using: efficiency = (useful output energy ÷ total input energy) × 100% ivalently, you can use power: efficiency = (useful power output ÷ total power input) × 100%. The result can never exceed 100% (unless you have discovered a perpetual motion machine! e an efficiency less than 1. For example, an electric motor might have an efficiency of 85%, meaning 15% power data, or to explain ways to improve it, such as using lubrication or upgrading components.
efficiency = (useful output energy / total input energy) × 100%
10. Energy Dissipation and Useful Energy |
During processes, energy often spreads out into the surroundings and becomes less useful – this is called energy dissipation. The classic example is a car engine: only about 25% of the chemical energy in the fuel is transformed into kinetic energy that moves the car; the remaining 75% becomes thermal energy that is transferred to the engine components, exhaust gases, and surrounding air, plus some sound energy. This waste energy is not destroyed, but it is difficult to harness for further useful tasks. Designers combat dissipation by reducing friction (using ball bearings, low-friction coatings), using thermal insulation (to keep heat in), and streamlining objects (to reduce air resistance). In exam answers, always link dissipation to friction, air resistance, or electrical resistance, and explain that
