1. Ionic Bonding: Formation and Properties |
Ionic bonding occurs when a metal atom transfers one or more electrons to a non-metal atom. The metal loses electrons to form a positively charged cation (e.g. Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺), while the non-metal gains those electrons to form a negatively charged anion (e.g. Cl⁻, O²⁻, N³⁻). The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions extends throughout the whole structure, resulting in a giant ionic lattice. In such a lattice, ions are packed in a regular, repeating arrangement, maximising attractive forces and minimising repulsion.
Ionic compounds exhibit characteristic properties that are direct consequences of their bonding and structure. They are crystalline solids at room temperature with high melting and boiling points because a great deal of energy is needed to overcome the strong ionic bonds throughout the lattice. They are hard but brittle — when a layer of ions is displaced, like charges align and repulsion causes the crystal to shatter. In the solid state, ions are locked in place and cannot move, so ionic compounds do not conduct electricity. However, when melted or dissolved in water, the ions become mobile and the substance conducts electricity. Many ionic compounds are soluble in water because water molecules can hydrate the ions, but they are insoluble in non-polar solvents such as hexane.

2. Covalent Bonding: Sharing Electrons |
onal bond. Covalent bonds can be single (one shared pair, e.g. H−H), double (two shared pairs, e.g. O=O) or triple (three shared pairs, e.g. N≡ of a covalent bond increases with bond order, reflected in bond enthalpy and bond length.
Covalent substances can form either simple molecular structures or giant covalent networks. Simple molecular substances, such as H₂O, CO₂ and I₂, consist of small discrete molecules with strong covalent bonds within each molecule but only weak intermolecular forces between molecules. These substances tend to have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures, such as diamond (C), graphite (C) and silicon dioxide (SiO₂), are built from a vast network of covalent bonds extending throughout the entire solid. They have very high melting points, are usually hard, and (with the exception of graphite) do not conduct electricity.
3. Electronegativity and Bond Polarity |
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons in a covalent bond towards itself. The Pauling scale assigns values to elements, with fluorine being the most electronegative (4.0). Moving across a period, electronegativity increases; moving down a group, it decreases. When two atoms with different electronegativities form a covalent bond, the electron pair is not shared equally. The more electronegative atom acquires a partial negative charge (δ⁻), and the less electronegative atom a partial positive charge (δ⁺). This separation of charge creates a polar bond, which has a permanent dipole.
The polarity of a whole molecule depends on both the presence of polar bonds and the molecular geometry. If polar bonds are arranged symmetrically, their dipoles cancel, resulting in a non-polar molecule (e.g. CO₂ is linear, tetrachloromethane CCl₄ is tetrahedral). If the dipoles do not cancel, the molecule is polar (e.g. H₂O is bent, NH₃ is trigonal pyramidal). Examiners frequently ask students to predict molecular polarity or to explain why a particular molecule is polar or non-polar using both bond polarity and shape.
4. Molecular Shapes and Bond Angles (VSEPR) | 分子形状与键角 (VSEPR理论)
The Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory states that electron pairs around a central atom repel each other and arrange themselves as far apart as possible to minimise this repulsion. Both bonding pairs and lone pairs must be considered, but lone pairs repel more strongly than bonding pairs. The number of electron pair domains (bonds + lone pairs) determines the electron-pair geometry, while the actual molecular shape is named according to the positions of the atoms only.
The most common shapes and bond angles tested at Edexcel A-Level are: linear (2 bond pairs, 0 lone pairs, 180°), trigonal planar (3 bond pairs, 0 lone pairs, 120°), tetrahedral (4 bond pairs, 0 lone pairs, 109.5°), trigonal pyramidal (3 bond pairs, 1 lone pair, approx. 107°, as in NH₃), bent or V-shaped (2 bond pairs, 2 lone pairs, approx. 104.5°, as in H₂O), trigonal bipyramidal (5 bond pairs, 0 lone pairs, 90° and 120°), and octahedral (6 bond pairs, 0 lone pairs, 90°). When drawing these shapes, use wedges and dashed lines to show 3D structure.
Lone pairs compress bond angles due to their greater repulsion. For example, the H−N−H angle in ammonia (107°) is slightly less than the ideal tetrahedral angle (109.5°) because the single lone pair occupies more space. In water, two lone pairs reduce the H−O−H angle to about 104.5°. Understanding this trend allows students to predict and rationalise slight deviations from ideal angles.
5. Metallic Bonding: The Electron Sea |
Metallic bonding is described by the electron sea model. In a metal lattice, positively charged metal cations occupy fixed positions, while their outermost electrons become delocalised and move freely throughout the structure. The strong electrostatic attraction between the lattice of positive ions and the ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons accounts for the typical properties of metals: high electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability, ductility and generally high melting and boiling points.
Metals conduct electricity because the delocalised electrons are free to drift through the lattice under an applied potential difference. They are good conductors of heat for the same reason — mobile electrons transfer kinetic energy rapidly. Metals are malleable (can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires) because layers of cations can slide over each other without breaking the metallic bonding; the electron sea simply adjusts to the new arrangement. The strength of metallic bonding depends on the number of delocalised electrons per cation and the ionic radius. For instance, magnesium (Mg²⁺, two delocalised electrons per ion) has stronger metallic bonding and a higher melting point than sodium (Na⁺, one delocalised electron per ion).
6. Intermolecular Forces: Types and Effects |
Intermolecular forces are the attractive forces between molecules. They are much weaker than covalent, ionic or metallic bonds but are crucial in determining physical properties such as melting points, boiling points and solubility. The three main types are London (dispersion) forces, permanent dipole–dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding.
London forces exist between all molecules and atoms. They arise from instantaneous fluctuations in electron distribution, which create temporary dipoles that induce dipoles in neighbouring particles. The strength of London forces increases with the number of electrons (molecular size) and the surface area of contact. This explains why the boiling points of the noble gases and the alkanes increase down the group or with chain length.
Permanent dipole–dipole forces occur only between polar molecules. The partial positive end of one molecule attracts the partial negative end of a neighbouring molecule. These forces add to the London forces, giving polar molecules higher boiling points than non-polar molecules of comparable size. Intermolecular forces can be distinguished experimentally by comparing boiling points or solubility patterns.
7. Hydrogen Bonding and Its Importance |
Hydrogen bonding is a special, particularly strong type of dipole–dipole interaction. It occurs when a hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to a very electronegative atom — nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine — and this hydrogen atom is attracted to a lone pair on a neighbouring N, O or F atom. Hydrogen bonds are typically represented by dotted lines and are about one-tenth as strong as a covalent bond, yet they are the strongest intermolecular force.
Hydrogen bonding has far-reaching consequences. It explains why water has a relatively high boiling point for a small molecule, why ice is less dense than liquid water (the open lattice structure), and why alcohols are soluble in water. In biology, hydrogen bonds hold together the two strands of DNA and stabilise the secondary structures of proteins. In the exam, you may be asked to draw hydrogen bonds between molecules such as H₂O, NH₃ or HF, clearly showing the relevant lone pairs and partial charges.
8. Dative Covalent Bonds |
A dative covalent bond (also called a coordinate bond) is a covalent bond in which both electrons of the shared pair come from the same atom. Once formed, a dative bond is indistinguishable from a normal covalent bond. It arises when an atom with a lone pair (the donor) donates that pair to an electron-deficient atom or ion (the acceptor). Common examples include the ammonium ion NH₄⁺, the hydronium ion H₃O⁺, and the dimer of aluminium chloride, Al₂Cl₆. In transition metal chemistry, ligands donate lone pairs to form coordinate bonds with the central metal ion.
When representing dative bonds in diagrams, an arrow is often drawn from the donor atom to the acceptor atom. For NH₄⁺, the lone pair on nitrogen is donated to a H⁺ ion. It is essential to show that after bond formation all four N−H bonds are equivalent. In Al₂Cl₆, each aluminium atom accepts a lone pair from a chlorine atom on the neighbouring AlCl₃ unit, bridging the two units.
9. Bond Enthalpy and Bond Length |
erage energy required to break one mole of a given covalent bond in the gaseous state. For diatomic molecules, the bond dissociation enthalpy is exact; for larger molecules, average bond enthalpies are used. Bond enthalpy reflects bond strength: a higher bond enthalpy means a stronger bond. Multiple bonds have higher bond enthalpies than single bonds between the same atoms (e.g. C≡ nd strength is inversely related to bond length: the shorter the bond, the stronger it is.
m of bond enthalpies of bonds broken) − (sum of bond enthalpies of bonds formed). This calculation assumes that all reactants and products are in the gaseous state and that average bond enthalpies are accurate. The formula is central to many Edexcel questions; students must be able to identify which bonds are broken and which are formed from displayed formulae.
ΔH ≈ Σ E(bonds broken) – Σ E(bonds formed)
ΔH ≈ Σ E(断裂键) – Σ E(形成键)
10. Properties of Solids: Ionic, Covalent and Metallic |
The physical properties of solids reflect their bonding type and structure. Ionic solids (e.g. NaCl, MgO) are hard, brittle, have high melting points, are often soluble in water, and conduct electricity when molten. Metallic solids (e.g. Cu, Fe, Al) are shiny, malleable, ductile, conduct electricity and heat in the solid state, and have variable melting points depending on the strength of metallic bonding. Giant covalent solids (e.g. diamond, graphite, SiO₂) are very hard (except graphite), have extremely high melting points, and do not conduct electricity — graphite is an exception because each carbon atom forms three sigma bonds, leaving one delocalised electron per atom to move between layers.
