1. Scalars and Vectors |
Scalar quantities are those that have magnitude only, such as speed (m/s), distance (m), mass (kg), time (s), and energy (J). Vector quantities possess both magnitude and direction; common examples include velocity, displacement, force, acceleration, and momentum. When vectors are added, the direction must be taken into account – you can use the tip-to-tail method or resolve each vector into perpendicular components. For instance, adding two forces of 3 N and 4 N at right angles yields a resultant force of 5 N at an angle of 53° to the 3 N force.
2. Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration |
t, given by v = Δs / Δt, and is also a vector. Acceleration (a) represents how quickly the velocity changes: a = Δv / Δt, in m/s². If an object' initial value u to a final value v over time t, the average acceleration is expressed as:
加速度(a)表示速度变化的快慢:a = Δv / Δt,单位为 m/s²。
a = (v - u) / t
Displacement is not the same as distance; distance is the total path length (scalar), whereas displacement is the straight-line difference between start and end points with a specified direction.
stantaneous velocity. A straight, sloping line indicates constant velocity; a horizontal line means the object is at rest (velocity = 0). When the graph is curved, the velocity is changing – you must draw a tangent to the curve at the point of interest and calculate its gradient.
4. Velocity-Time Graphs |
On a velocity-time graph, velocity is plotted against time. The gradient of the graph represents acceleration. The area between the graph line and the time axis gives the displacement traveled in that time interval. For example, a horizontal line shows zero acceleration (constant velocity), while a straight sloped line indicates uniform acceleration. The area under a velocity-time graph can be found by splitting it into simple shapes like rectangles and triangles. If the graph dips below the time axis, the area corresponds to displacement in the opposite direction.
5. Equations of Motion (SUVAT) | 运动方程(SUVAT)
For an object moving with constant acceleration along a straight line, four equations link the five key quantities: displacement (s), initial velocity (u), final velocity (v), acceleration (a), and time (t). These are collectively known as the SUVAT equations and are widely used to solve kinematics problems.
v = u + at
s = ut + ½at²
v² = u² + 2as
s = ½(u + v)t
These equations are valid only when acceleration is constant. When tackling a problem, list the known quantities and the one you need to find, then select the equation that contains all of them. Always take care with signs; choose a positive direction and ensure all vector quantities such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration carry the correct sign.
6. Free Fall and Acceleration due to Gravity |
Objects falling freely near the Earth' ten approximated as 9.8 m/s². In the absence of air resistance, all objects fall with this same acceleration regardless of their mass. Free fall problems can be solved using the SUVAT equations by setting a = g (or a = -g depending on the chosen sign convention). For an object dropped from rest (u = 0), the displacement after time t is:
s = ½gt²
Remember to keep the sign convention consistent throughout the calculation, for example taking downward as positive.
7. Projectile Motion |
he initial velocity into horizontal and vertical components. The horizontal component of velocity remains constant (if air resistance is ignored) because there is no horizontal acceleration. The vertical component experiences a constant downward acceleration due to gravity (g = 9.81 m/s²). If an object is projected with speed u at an angle θ to the horizontal, the components are:
ux = u cos θ, uy = u sin θ
flight is determined entirely by the vertical motion. The maximum height reached is H = uy² / (2g), and the horizontal range is R = ux y is parabolic, and the motion in the two directions can be treated independently using the SUVAT equations.
8. Forces and Newton's First Law |
Newton's first law of motion states that an object will remain at rest or continue to move with constant velocity unless acted upon by an external resultant force. This tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion is called inertia. When the net force on an object is zero, the object is said to be in equilibrium: it may be stationary or moving at a constant speed in a straight line. For example, a car cruising at a steady speed on a flat road has the driving force balanced by resistive forces.
