📚 Moments | 力矩
When a force is applied to an object, it can cause the object to turn or rotate about a specific point. The turning effect produced by a force is known as the moment of a force. Understanding moments is fundamental in A-Level Mechanics because it explains how levers, bridges, and even our own bodies maintain rotational equilibrium. In the Edexcel specification, you are expected to define moment, apply the principle of moments, work with couples, and solve problems involving non-perpendicular forces.
1. Definition of a Moment |
The moment of a force about a point is the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to that point. In simpler terms, moment measures how effectively a force can cause rotation around a pivot. The point is often called the pivot or fulcrum. The SI unit of moment is the newton metre (N m). Although force and distance are both vector quantities, moment is often treated as a quantity that can have a clockwise or anticlockwise sense; in the Edexcel course, you will assign positive and negative signs to distinguish the direction of rotation.
Imagine pushing a door open. If you apply the force close to the hinges, you need a much larger force to produce the same turning effect as when you push near the handle. That is because the perpendicular distance from the hinge (pivot) to the handle is larger, so the moment is greater for the same applied force. Similarly, a spanner turning a nut works on this principle: a longer spanner gives a larger moment with less effort.
2. Equation for Moment |
The fundamental equation for the magnitude of a moment is:
Moment (M) = Force (F) × Perpendicular distance (d)
where d is the shortest distance from the pivot to the line along which the force acts. This distance is always measured at right angles to the direction of the force. If a force acts directly through the pivot, its perpendicular distance is zero and it produces no moment.
In many exam problems, the force is not applied at a right angle to the lever arm. You must then either resolve the force into components parallel and perpendicular to the lever arm, or find the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action using trigonometry. Only the component of force perpendicular to the lever arm contributes to the moment. You will often see the relationship expressed as:
M = F × d × sin θ
where θ is the angle between the force and the lever arm. This form is especially useful when the line of the force and the lever arm are not perpendicular.
3. Principle of Moments |
For an object in rotational equilibrium, the total sum of clockwise moments about any pivot must equal the total sum of anticlockwise moments about that same pivot. This is known as the principle of moments. Together with the condition that the resultant force is zero (translational equilibrium), the principle makes it possible to calculate unknown forces acting on beams, levers, and other structures.
itions are adjusted until the beam is horizontal. At this point, the total anticlockwise moment (weight₁ × distance from pivot) equals the total clockwise moment (weight₂ × distance from pivot). This experiment is a core practical in the Edexcel specification.
When solving problems, always choose a pivot that eliminates the most unknown forces. Often it is useful to take moments about a support or a point where an unknown reaction force acts, because the moment of that force will be zero and it will not appear in your equation.
4. Couples and Torque |
A couple consists of two equal and opposite forces whose lines of action are parallel but do not coincide. A couple produces pure rotation without any resultant translational force. The moment of a couple, sometimes called torque, is given by:
a couple = One of the forces (F) × Perpendicular distance (d) between the lines of action
Note that you multiply the magnitude of one force by the whole perpendicular distance between the two forces, not by the distance to a pivot. The moment of a couple is independent of the pivot point, which makes it a particularly useful concept in rotational mechanics. Steering wheels, bicycle pedals, and electric motors all rely on couples to produce rotation.
In Edexcel exam questions, you may be asked to calculate the torque provided by a couple acting on a coil in a magnetic field or on a simple mechanical system. The same principle applies: identify the two equal and opposite forces and the perpendicular separation between them, then multiply.
5. Centre of Gravity and Stability |
The centre of gravity (COG) of an object is the point through which the entire weight of the object appears to act. For a uniform, symmetrical body, the COG lies at its geometric centre. When you calculate moments due to the weight of a uniform beam, you can treat the entire weight as acting at the COG, which for a uniform beam is its midpoint.
Stability depends on the position of the centre of gravity and the area of the base. An object will topple over if a vertical line drawn downwards from its COG falls outside its base of support. The lower the centre of gravity and the wider the base, the more stable the object. This explains why racing cars have a very low COG and why double-decker buses are tested on a tilt test to ensure their stability.
In mechanics problems, knowing the COG allows you to include the weight in moment calculations without having to consider the distribution of mass. For non-uniform objects, the COG can be found experimentally by suspending the object from different points and drawing vertical lines; the COG is the intersection of those lines.
6. Solving Equilibrium Problems |
In a typical Edexcel mechanics problem, you may be given a horizontal beam supported at one or more points, with several forces acting. To find unknown forces, follow these steps: draw a clear free-body diagram showing all forces and their distances from a chosen pivot; apply the principle of moments taking clockwise and anticlockwise moments about that pivot; use the condition that the total upward force equals the total downward force if the beam is in translational equilibrium. Sometimes you need to take moments about two different points to generate enough equations.
Always resolve forces vertically first if necessary, then write the moment equation. To avoid sign errors, decide at the start whether you will treat clockwise moments as positive. As long as you are consistent, the algebra will work.
A classic example: a uniform plank of length L rests on two supports at its ends. A weight is placed somewhere on the plank. To find the reaction forces at the supports, take moments about one support; this eliminates the reaction at that support from the equation. You can then find the other reaction and use the vertical force balance to find the remaining one.
7. Non-Perpendicular Forces and Components |
at the end of a rod of length r, making an angle θ with the rod. The moment about the pivot at the other end is F × r × sin θ. Alternatively, you can extend the line of action and find the perpendicular distance from the pivot to that line, which equals r sin θ.
e force and the lever arm, and then visualise the perpendicular component. If the force acts along the lever (θ = 0° or 180°), the moment is zero; if the force is perpendicular (θ = 90°), the moment is maximum, F × r.
In equilibrium problems with inclined beams (e.g. a ladder leaning against a wall), you must often resolve forces and take moments about a carefully chosen point. For ladder problems, taking moments about the point where the ladder touches the floor or the wall can simplify calculations because unknown forces at those points may have zero moment.
8. Applications: Levers and Bridges |
Levers are simple machines that use the principle of moments to magnify an effort force. In a class-1 lever, the pivot lies between the load and the effort (e.g. a crowbar). In a class-2 lever, the load is between the pivot and the effort (e.g. a wheelbarrow). In a class-3 lever, the effort is between the pivot and the load (e.g. tweezers). By arranging the distances, a small effort can balance a large load if the effort is farther from the pivot than the load.
Bridges and cranes are more complex structures, but their analysis relies on the same fundamental principles. A beam bridge supported at both ends can be analysed like a plank. The forces in the cables of a suspension bridge or the jib of a crane also obey the principle of moments. Engineers design these systems so that the moments created by loads are safely balanced by tension or compression in structural members.
9. Experiment: Verifying the Principle of Moments |
n either side, using loops of string. The distances of the weights from the pivot are recorded, along with the values of the weights. You then calculate the anticlockwise moment (weight × distance) and the clockwise moment. When the ruler is balanced horizontally, these two totals should be equal, within experimental uncertainty.
Key sources of error include the mass of the ruler itself if it is not perfectly uniform, friction at the pivot, and parallax when reading the scale. To improve accuracy, use a sharp pivot and take readings with the eye level with the scale. Repeating the experiment with different combinations of weights and distances provides multiple data points to confirm the principle.
10. Common Mistakes and Exam Tips |
Many students lose marks by not identifying the correct perpendicular distance. If a force acts at an angle, you must use the perpendicular component or find the perpendicular distance. Drawing a clear diagram and labelling forces and distances is essential. Another error is forgetting to include the weight of a uniform beam when it is given; remember that the weight acts at its centre.
In problems involving supports, students sometimes take moments about the wrong point and make the algebra harder. Always choose the pivot to eliminate an unknown reaction. Also, when writing the principle of moments, ensure you correctly identify the sense (clockwise or anticlockwise) of each force. Assign a consistent sign convention and stick to it.
In an exam, check that your answer is reasonable. If a reaction force turns out to be negative, it means the direction you assumed is opposite to the actual direction; state that clearly. Finally, practise as many past paper questions as you can—Edexcel often combines moments with forces in equilibrium and even with centre of mass calculations.
