📚 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Principles and Applications |
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful non‑invasive diagnostic technique that exploits the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to produce detailed images of soft tissues inside the human body. By placing a patient in a strong static magnetic field, applying radiofrequency pulses, and using precisely controlled magnetic field gradients, MRI can map the distribution and relaxation properties of hydrogen nuclei, primarily from water and fat. Understanding the physics behind MRI – from quantum spin to signal processing – allows us to appreciate how contrast is generated and how three‑dimensional anatomical information is reconstructed without using ionising radiation.

1. Introduction to MRI | MRI简介
MRI relies on the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei. In clinical MRI, the hydrogen nucleus (a single proton, ¹H) is the principal source of signal because it is abundant in water and fat and has a relatively large magnetic moment. When placed in a strong external magnetic field, many such protons can align with or against the field, producing a small net magnetisation that can be manipulated and detected.
2. Nuclear Spin and Magnetic Moment |
ic moment μ. In the absence of an external field, these magnetic moments are randomly oriented, resulting in zero net magnetisation. A quantum mechanical description shows that for a spin‑½ particle like the proton, two energy states exist in a magnetic field B₀: the low‑energy state aligned parallel (spin up) and the high‑ ned antiparallel (spin down). The energy difference is ΔE = 2μB₀, or more generally ΔE = γħB₀, where γ is the gyromagnetic ratio and ħ is reduced Planck’s constant.
3. Larmor Precession and Resonance |
When a proton with magnetic moment μ is tilted away from the direction of B₀, it experiences a torque that causes it to precess around the field axis, much like a spinning top wobbling in a gravitational field. The angular frequency of this precession, known as the Larmor frequency, is given by:
ω₀ = γB₀
equency is approximately 64 MHz. Resonance occurs when an oscillating magnetic field B₁ (radiofrequency pulse) exactly matches the Larmor frequency, allowing efficient transfer of energy to flip spins between energy levels. This resonance condition is the heart of NMR and MRI.
ω₀ = γB₀
4. RF Excitation and Flip Angle |
to excite the proton spins. The B₁ field is usually perpendicular to B₀. The duration and amplitude of the pulse determine the flip angle α, the angle through which the net magnetisation vector M is rotated away from the z‑ lse duration. Common flip angles are 90° (π/2) and 180° (π). A 90° pulse tips M entirely into the transverse plane, generating maximum detectable signal, while a 180° pulse inverts M, useful in spin‑echo sequences.
5. Relaxation Processes: T₁ and T₂ | 弛豫过程:T₁和T₂
After the RF pulse is turned off, the excited spins return toward thermal equilibrium through two independent relaxation mechanisms. T₁ relaxation, also called spin–lattice relaxation, describes the recovery of the longitudinal magnetisation Mz along B₀. It involves the transfer of excess energy to the surrounding molecular environment (the lattice) and is characterised by the time constant T₁. T₂ relaxation, or spin–spin relaxation, describes the decay of the transverse magnetisation Mxy practice, magnetic field inhomogeneities cause an even faster decay, described by T₂* (T₂‑star), where 1/T₂* = 1/T₂ + γΔB₀/2.
6. Free Induction Decay and Signal Detection |
Immediately after a 90° RF pulse, the precessing transverse magnetisation induces a small oscillating voltage in a receiver coil. This signal, called Free Induction Decay (FID), oscillates at the Larmor frequency and decays exponentially with time constant T₂*. The magnitude of the FID depends on the proton density in the tissue. By measuring the FID and its decay, one can extract information about proton density, T₁, and T₂, which form the basis of MRI contrast.
7. Spatial Encoding: Gradient Coils |
etermine the spatial origin of signal. This is achieved by three orthogonal gradient coils that deliberately superimpose linear magnetic field variations on the main field B₀. The gradient along z (slice‑selection), along y (phase‑encoding), and along x (frequency‑ ched on and off in a precisely timed sequence. The local Larmor frequency becomes position‑ is the gradient vector. This encoding allows recovery of spatial information without any moving parts.
8. Slice Selection |
Slice selection is the first step in MRI spatial encoding. A magnetic field gradient Gz is applied simultaneously with a frequency‑ re excited. The slice thickness Δz is determined by the RF bandwidth Δf and the gradient strength: Δz = (2π Δf) / (γ Gz). By varying the centre frequency of the RF pulse, any desired slice orientation and position can be targeted.
9. Frequency Encoding and Phase Encoding |
Once a slice is excited, the in‑plane spatial information is obtained using frequency encoding and phase encoding. A frequency‑encoding gradient Gx is switched on during signal readout, causing spins at different x positions to precess at slightly different frequencies. Simultaneously, a brief phase‑encoding gradient Gy is applied before readout, imposing a phase shift that depends on the y coordinate. Repeating the sequence with many different amplitudes of Gy (typical values 128, 256 or 512) fills a matrix of data points, each containing a mixture of frequency and phase information.
10. k-Space and Image Reconstruction | k
The raw data acquired during each readout interval are stored as spatial frequency components in a mathematical domain called k‑space. Each line in k‑space corresponds to one phase‑encoding step, and the centre of k‑space contains low spatial frequency information (image contrast), while the periphery contains high spatial frequency information (fine details and edges). A 2D inverse Fourier transform converts k‑space data into a spatial image. The relationship is analogous to representing a waveform as a sum of sine and cosine functions of different frequencies.
11. MRI Contrast and Clinical Uses | MRI
The appearance of tissues in an MRI image depends on the chosen pulse sequence parameters. By adjusting repetition time (TR) and echo time (TE), three primary types of contrast are obtained:
- T₁‑weighted: short TR and short TE; fluids appear dark, fat bright – good for anatomy.
- T₂‑weighted: long TR and long TE; fluids appear bright – ideal for detecting oedema and inflammation.
- Proton density‑weighted: long TR and short TE; contrast based mainly on water content.
MRI is widely used for imaging the brain, spine, joints, abdomen, and cardiovascular system. It is particularly valuable for soft‑tissue differentiation without using ionising radiation.
12. Safety and Limitations |
MRI is generally safe because it uses non‑ionising radio waves and magnetic fields. However, strict safety protocols must be followed. The strong static magnetic field can turn ferromagnetic objects into dangerous projectiles and may affect active implants like pacemakers. Gradient coil switching can generate loud acoustic noise and induce peripheral nerve stimulation. The RF pulses deposit energy that can cause tissue heating, quantified by the specific absorption rate (SAR). Limitations include long scan times, susceptibility to motion artefacts, and high cost. In addition, patients with certain metallic implants or claustrophobia may not be suitable for MRI.
