📚 X-ray Attenuation | X
X-ray attenuation is the reduction in the intensity of an X-ray beam as it passes through matter. When photons interact with atoms in the material, they can be absorbed or scattered, thereby removing them from the primary beam. This concept is fundamental in medical imaging, radiation shielding, and materials analysis.
1. Exponential Attenuation Law |
itted intensity I after travelling a thickness x is given by the exponential law: I = I₀ e-μx, where I₀ is the incident intensity and μ is the linear attenuation coefficient of the material. This relationship shows that equal thicknesses of material reduce the intensity by the same fraction, not the same absolute amount.
I = I₀ e-μx
Hence the intensity falls continuously and never reaches zero in a finite thickness, but it can be reduced to any desired fraction.
2. Linear Attenuation Coefficient μ |
The linear attenuation coefficient μ is a measure of how quickly a beam is attenuated per unit thickness of material. Its unit is m⁻¹ (per metre). A larger μ means the material is a stronger attenuator. μ depends on the photon energy and the atomic number and density of the material.
For example, lead has a very high μ for diagnostic X-ray energies, making it effective for shielding. Soft tissue has a much lower μ, so X-rays can penetrate to form an image.
3. Half-Value Thickness (HVT) | 半值层(HVT)
X-ray beam to half of its original value. Setting I = I₀/2 in the attenuation law gives x1/2 = ln 2 / μ ≈ 0.693 / μ.
将 I = I₀/2 代入衰减定律可得 x1/2 = ln 2 / μ ≈ 0.693 / μ。
x1/2 = ln 2 / μ ≈ 0.693 / μ
HVT is a convenient way to describe the penetrating power of radiation through a given material. It is used in radiation protection to determine shielding requirements.
4. Mass Attenuation Coefficient |
The linear attenuation coefficient depends on the density ρ of the material. To compare the attenuation of different materials independently of density, we use the mass attenuation coefficient μ/ρ (or μm), with units of m² kg⁻¹. The attenuation law can be rewritten as I = I₀ e-(μ/ρ) ρ x, where ρx is the mass thickness (mass per unit area).
I = I₀ e-(μ/ρ) ρx
Mass attenuation coefficients are roughly independent of the physical state of the material (solid, liquid, gas) and are functions of photon energy and atomic number.
5. Mechanisms of Attenuation |
For X-ray photons in the diagnostic energy range (up to about 150 keV), two main interaction processes contribute to attenuation: the photoelectric effect and Compton scattering.
- Photoelectric effect: The photon is completely absorbed by an atom, ejecting a tightly bound electron (often from the K-shell). The probability of photoelectric absorption varies approximately as Z³/E³, so it is dominant for low photon energies E and high atomic number Z materials.
- Compton scattering: The photon interacts with a loosely bound outer electron, transferring part of its energy to the electron and being scattered with reduced energy and a change in direction. Compton scattering probability depends on electron density and varies slowly with energy; it dominates at medium energies in soft tissue.
Pair production (creation of an electron–positron pair) can occur for photon energies above 1.02 MeV, which is beyond typical diagnostic X-rays but relevant in radiotherapy and high-energy physics.
6. Factors Affecting Attenuation |
The attenuation of X-rays depends on the energy of the photons, the atomic number and density of the material, and the thickness of the material.
Higher photon energy E generally leads to lower μ because the probability of photoelectric absorption decreases rapidly with E. However, near absorption edges (binding energies of electron shells), there is a sudden increase in attenuation as the energy becomes just sufficient to eject inner-shell electrons.
Materials with high atomic number (e.g., lead, bismuth) attenuate X-rays much more strongly than low-Z materials (e.g., soft tissue, water) because of the strong Z dependence of photoelectric absorption.
7. Attenuation and Medical Imaging |
In diagnostic radiography, the X-ray beam passes through the patient, and the transmitted intensity is recorded by a detector. Different tissues attenuate the beam to different extents, producing the contrast in the image. Bone, with relatively high effective atomic number and density, attenuates strongly and appears white on the image. Air-filled lungs attenuate weakly and appear dark. Soft tissue provides intermediate attenuation.
To enhance contrast in certain structures, contrast agents such as barium sulfate (for GI tract) or iodine compounds (for blood vessels) are used. These materials have high atomic numbers and strongly absorb X-rays, making the region filled with them appear much whiter.
The attenuation of the beam must be carefully controlled: too little penetration yields an underexposed image; too much yields an overexposed
