📚 Modelling with Particles and Waves |
In physics, the behaviour of light, electrons and other entities cannot be explained by a single classical concept. Instead, we construct complementary models – treating them as particles in some experiments and as waves in others. This 'wave-particle duality' is central to modern physics and underpins topics from the photoelectric effect to electron microscopy. Understanding how and when to apply each model is a key skill in A-Level Physics.
1. The Need for Two Models |
Classical physics treats particles and waves as entirely separate: a particle is a localised lump of matter with mass and momentum, whereas a wave is a spread-out disturbance that exhibits interference and diffraction. However, early 20th-century experiments forced physicists to accept that light, previously well described as a wave, could also behave like a stream of particles. Similarly, electrons, traditionally viewed as particles, displayed wave-like interference patterns. No single classical picture is sufficient; hence, we use two complementary models.
2. Key Features of a Particle Model |
In a particle model, energy is carried in discrete packets. For light, these are called photons. A particle has a definite position, momentum and kinetic energy. It does not spread out or superpose; two particles cannot occupy the same space simultaneously. The model explains phenomena where energy is transferred in quantised amounts, such as the photoelectric effect, and where collisions are involved, such as Compton scattering. Photons travel in straight lines and cast sharp shadows, reminiscent of tiny bullets.
A particle's behaviour is summarised by:
- Localised in space and time | 在空间和时间上局域
- Carries momentum p and kinetic energy | 携带动量 p 和动能
- Energy can be counted as discrete quanta E = h f (for photons) | 能量可视为离散量子 E = h f(对于光子)
- No superposition or interference |
3. Key Features of a Wave Model |
A wave model describes energy spread over a region, characterised by wavelength λ, frequency f and amplitude. Waves undergo superposition, producing interference and diffraction patterns when they pass through slits or around obstacles. The classic evidence for the wave nature of light comes from Young's double-slit experiment, where bright and dark fringes are formed. A wave does not have a single, well-defined position; it is delocalised.

4. Evidence for Particle Nature: The Photoelectric Effect |
y f₀, regardless of the intensity. Increasing intensity only increases the number of emitted electrons, not their maximum kinetic energy. This cannot be explained by the wave model, which predicts that a very intense low-frequency light should eventually deliver enough energy to release electrons. Einstein explained this by proposing that light consists of photons, each carrying energy E = h f. An electron absorbs a whole photon' s the work function Φ of the metal, the electron is ejected with kinetic energy Kₘₐₓ = h f – Φ.
The photoelectric equation can be written as:
E = h f = Φ + Kₘₐₓ
This clearly shows the particle-like, one-to-one interaction between a photon and an electron. The wave model fails to account for the sharp frequency threshold and instantaneous emission.
5. Photon Momentum and Radiation Pressure |
h / λ. This prediction of the photon model was confirmed by Compton scattering, in which X-ray photons are scattered by electrons, changing wavelength exactly as if billiard-ball collisions occurred. The momentum of photons also accounts for the tiny pressure exerted by light on surfaces, known as radiation pressure. A wave model would struggle to explain how an electromagnetic wave, without mass, can transfer discrete packets of momentum.
p = h / λ
6. Evidence for Wave Nature: Interference and Diffraction |
tream of particles, two overlapping beams would not produce regions of darkness. Yet Young' ly, monochromatic light passing through a single slit produces a diffraction pattern with a central maximum and faint side maxima. These patterns are accurately predicted by wave theory using path differences and the condition d sin θ = n λ for constructive interference. Thus, light must have wave character.
Such patterns cannot be reproduced by a simple particle model. Even if photons are sent through one at a time, the interference pattern builds up gradually, suggesting each photon goes through both slits like a wave and 'interferes with itself'.
7. Electron Diffraction and de Broglie's Hypothesis |
In 1924, Louis de Broglie proposed that if light waves can behave like particles, then perhaps particles like electrons can behave like waves. He suggested that any moving particle has an associated wavelength, now called the de Broglie wavelength:
λ = h / p = h / (m v)
This hypothesis was confirmed when Davisson and Germer scattered electrons from a nickel crystal and observed a diffraction pattern identical to that of X-rays of the calculated wavelength. Passing electrons through graphite films produced concentric diffraction rings, proving that electrons undergo wave-like scattering. The wave nature of matter is only noticeable for very small particles, because Planck's constant h is so tiny.
8. Calculations Using the de Broglie Wavelength |
The de Broglie wavelength is central to wave-particle duality. For an electron accelerated through a potential difference V, its kinetic energy is e V. Hence,
½ m v² = e V → v = √2 e V / m
Substituting into λ = h / (m v) gives:
λ = h / √2 m e V
le to the spacing of atoms in a crystal. This explains why crystal lattices are suitable gratings for electron diffraction. The ability to tune the wavelength by changing the accelerating voltage is a key advantage in electron microscopy.
m, so small that wave effects are utterly undetectable. This is why we only observe wave behaviour at the atomic scale.
9. Comparing Particle and Wave Models: A Helpful Table |
The following table summarises the contrasting features and the evidence supporting each model.

10. Wave-Particle Duality and Probability Interpretation |
The modern view resolves the apparent contradiction: a 'particle' such as an electron is described by a wave function that gives the probability of finding the particle at a particular location. The wave-like behaviour arises from the superposition of probability amplitudes, and the particle-like behaviour appears when a measurement is made. In the double-slit experiment with single electrons, each electron arrives at the screen as a whole particle, producing a single dot, but many dots build up an interference pattern dictated by the de Broglie wavelength. Thus, the wave determines the probability of where the particle will land.
This interpretation unites the two models: the wave guides the particle, but the energy is always detected in discrete particle-like packets. The duality is not a flaw in our understanding but a fundamental feature of nature at the quantum scale.
11. Application: Electron Microscope |
usands of times shorter than the wavelength of visible light, electron microscopes can resolve much finer details than optical microscopes. The resolving power is directly linked to the wavelength; shorter wavelengths overcome the diffraction limit that blurs images. Thus, modelling electrons as waves has a practical and powerful application in imaging viruses, molecules and nanostructures.
12. Limitations and the Scope of the Models |
Neither the pure particle model nor the pure wave model is complete. The particle model cannot explain interference; the wave model cannot explain the quantisation of photon energy or the instantaneous ejection in the photoelectric effect. We must choose the appropriate model based on the phenomenon under investigation. At A-Level, we use the photon model to handle energy quantisation and momentum exchange, and the wave model to handle propagation, interference and diffraction. Recognising the boundaries of each model is a vital part of understanding modern physics.
