📚 Explaining Electromagnetic Induction |
Electromagnetic induction is the fundamental process by which a changing magnetic field produces an electromotive force (emf) in a conductor. Discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, this principle underpins the operation of generators, transformers, induction motors, and many other devices essential to modern electrical engineering. A thorough grasp of magnetic flux, flux linkage, Faraday's law, and Lenz's law is required to explain and apply the phenomenon in A-Level Physics.
1. Magnetic Flux |
h a plane surface of area A, the flux is Φ = B A cos θ, where θ is the angle between the magnetic field lines and the normal to the surface. When the field is perpendicular to the surface, θ = 0 and flux is maximum, Φ = B A. The SI unit of magnetic flux is the weber (Wb), where 1 Wb = 1 T m².
Φ = B A cos θ
2. Flux Linkage |
a uniform field B, the flux linkage Λ is N Φ = N B A cos θ. Flux linkage accounts for the cumulative effect of the magnetic field across all turns and is directly proportional to the induced emf when it changes. The unit of flux linkage is the weber-turn (Wb-turn).
对于置于匀强磁场 B 中、面积为 A 的线圈,磁通链 Λ = N Φ = N B A cos θ。
Flux linkage = N Φ = N B A cos θ
3. The Phenomenon of Electromagnetic Induction |
An emf is induced in a circuit whenever the magnetic flux linked with the circuit changes. This can be demonstrated by pushing a bar magnet into a coil connected to a sensitive centre-zero galvanometer. The needle deflects in one direction as the magnet moves in, returns to zero when the magnet is stationary, and deflects in the opposite direction as the magnet is withdrawn. No current is induced if there is no relative motion – it is the change in flux that matters, not the static presence of the field.
4. Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction |
Faraday' etic flux linkage. For an average change over time Δt, the induced emf ε is given by ε = N |ΔΦ/Δt| ection of the induced emf. The law implies that a faster change in flux, a larger area, a stronger field, or more turns all increase the induced emf.
ε = -N (ΔΦ/Δt)
5. Lenz's Law |
Lenz's law specifies the direction of the induced current: the induced current flows in such a direction as to oppose the change in magnetic flux that caused it. This opposition is a manifestation of energy conservation. For example, when the north pole of a magnet approaches a coil, the induced current creates a north pole at the coil's end facing the magnet, repelling the incoming magnet. Work must be done against this repulsion, which is transferred into electrical energy. The negative sign in Faraday's law codifies this opposition.
6. EMF Induced in a Moving Conductor |
onductor sweeps out an area L v Δt in a time Δt, changing the flux by B L v Δt. By Faraday' ar to the field, the component v sin θ perpendicular to B is used, giving ε = B L v sin θ.
ε = B L v (for perpendicular motion)
7. Principle of AC Generators |
gh the coil varies as N B A cos ωt (assuming θ = ωt). The induced emf is the derivative, giving ε = N B A ω sin ωt = ε₀ sin ωt, where ε₀ = N B A ω is the peak emf. The output is sinusoidal, and the frequency matches the mechanical rotation. Slip rings and brushes maintain electrical contact while permitting continuous rotation.
感应电动势为导数,得 ε = N B A ω sin ωt = ε₀ sin ωt,其中 ε₀ = N B A ω 为峰值电动势。
ε = ε₀ sin ωt, ε₀ = N B A ω
8. Eddy Currents | 涡流
Eddy currents are induced currents that circulate within bulk pieces of metal when they are exposed to changing magnetic fields. These currents generate heat (I²R losses) and produce magnetic fields that oppose the motion according to Lenz's law, leading to magnetic braking or damping. Eddy currents can be reduced by laminating metal cores, as seen in transformers, to increase resistance and limit current paths. They are usefully exploited in induction heating, metal detectors, and non-destructive testing.
9. Transformers | 变压器
ng flux in a laminated iron core, which links the secondary coil and induces an emf. For an ideal transformer with no losses, the ratio of secondary to primary voltage equals the turns ratio: Vₛ / Vₚ = Nₛ / Nₚ. By energy conservation, the input power equals the output power, so Iₛ Vₛ = Iₚ Vₚ, giving Iₛ / Iₚ = Nₚ / Nₛ. Step-up transformers increase voltage and decrease current; step-down transformers do the opposite.
根据能量守恒,输入功率等于输出功率,故 Iₛ Vₛ = Iₚ Vₚ,进而 Iₛ / Iₚ = Nₚ / Nₛ。
| Ideal Transformer Relations |
| Voltage ratio | Vₛ / Vₚ = Nₛ / Nₚ |
| Current ratio | Iₛ / Iₚ = Nₚ / Nₛ |
10. Energy Considerations and Conservation |
Lenz's law is a direct consequence of the principle of conservation of energy. If the induced current acted to reinforce the flux change instead of opposing it, a small movement would generate even more flux change and thus more induced current, leading to a runaway creation of energy. The opposing force means that mechanical work must be continuously supplied to sustain the motion that generates electricity, as in a generator. The efficiency of real devices is limited by heat losses from resistance and eddy currents, but energy conservation always holds overall.
11. Experimental Demonstrations |
Key classroom demonstrations include: moving a magnet through a coil to show induced emf direction; dropping a strong neodymium magnet down a copper tube to observe magnetic damping from eddy currents; switching a current in one coil to induce a momentary emf in a nearby secondary coil; and rotating a hand-cranked generator to light a bulb. These experiments reinforce the relationship that faster motion produces a larger emf and that the induced effects always oppose the cause according to Lenz's law. Using a CRO or data logger enables quantitative investigation of Faraday's law.
