📚 Capacitor Networks |
Capacitors are fundamental components in electrical circuits, capable of storing charge and energy. Understanding how multiple capacitors behave when connected in networks – series, parallel, or combinations – is essential for circuit analysis. In A-Level Physics (CIE), capacitor networks require applying charge conservation and Kirchhoff’s laws to determine equivalent capacitance, voltage distribution, and stored energy.
1. Capacitance and the Capacitor |
he charge stored on one plate and V is the potential difference across the plates. The larger the capacitance, the more charge it stores for a given voltage. In networks, we often treat capacitors as ideal, ignoring leakage and parasitic effects.
2. Series Connection of Capacitors |
When capacitors are connected in series, the same charge Q flows onto each capacitor because the inner plates are isolated from the rest of the circuit. The total voltage Vtotal across the series combination is the sum of the individual voltages: Vtotal = V₁ + V₂ + V₃. Using V = Q/C, we obtain Q/Ctotal = Q/C₁ + Q/C₂ + Q/C₃. Cancelling Q gives the series formula.
利用V = Q/C,得到Q/Ctotal = Q/C₁ + Q/C₂ + Q/C₃。
1/Ctotal = 1/C₁ + 1/C₂ + 1/C₃
The equivalent capacitance is always less than the smallest individual capacitance. This result is opposite to the behaviour of resistors in series.
For two capacitors in series, a convenient form is:
Ctotal = (C₁ × C₂) / (C₁ + C₂)
3. Parallel Connection of Capacitors |
In a parallel arrangement, all capacitors share the same voltage V. The total charge stored is the sum of the individual charges: Qtotal = Q₁ + Q₂ + Q₃. Using Q = CV, we get Ctotal V = C₁ V + C₂ V + C₃ V. Cancelling V yields the parallel formula.
Ctotal = C₁ + C₂ + C₃
The equivalent capacitance is the sum of the individual capacitances and is larger than any single capacitance. This is analogous to resistors in parallel but with the sum instead of reciprocal sum.
4. Charge Conservation in Capacitor Networks |
The principle of charge conservation is fundamental in network analysis. In any isolated part of a circuit, the net charge remains constant. For capacitors in series, the inner plates (connected to each other but not to the battery) must have a total charge of zero initially; after charging, equal and opposite charges appear on these plates. In more complex networks, identifying isolated “nodes” helps assign charges, ensuring that the algebraic sum of charges on plates connected to a floating node equals zero.
lates, if no external connection exists, the initial net charge is zero, and the final charges must satisfy Q₁ + Q₂ + Q₃ = 0 with appropriate sign conventions.
5. Simplifying Mixed Networks |
Many practical circuits contain both series and parallel combinations. To find the equivalent capacitance, we simplify step‑by‑step: first identify pure series or parallel subgroups, replace each with its equivalent capacitance, and redraw the circuit. Repeat this process until a single effective capacitance remains. This reduction technique is similar to that used for resistor networks, but the series formula for capacitors is the reciprocal sum.
While simplifying, remember that series‑reduced capacitors carry the same charge, whereas parallel‑reduced capacitors share the same voltage. This understanding is needed when you later calculate individual charges or voltages from the simplified network.
6. Voltage Division Across Capacitors in Series |
pacitance: V₁ = Q / C₁, V₂ = Q / C₂, etc. The smallest capacitor drops the largest voltage – a fact critical for avoiding dielectric breakdown.
Using the equivalent capacitance, we can express the voltage across a specific capacitor in terms of the total applied voltage Vtotal:
V₁ = Vtotal × (Ctotal / C₁)
Equivalently, V₁ = Vtotal × (1/C₁) / (1/C₁ + 1/C₂ + … sential when designing circuits that must stay within the rated voltage of each component.
7. Energy Stored in Capacitor Networks |
A capacitor stores energy in the electric field between its plates. The energy can be written in three equivalent forms:
E = ½ C V² E = ½ Q V E = ½ Q² / C
For a network, the total stored energy is simply the sum of the energies stored in each capacitor. This total can also be computed directly from the equivalent capacitance and the applied voltage: Etotal = ½ Cequiv Vtotal². In series, where charge is common, Etotal = ½ Q Vtotal = ½ Q² / Cequiv; in parallel, Etotal = ½ Cequiv V². Energy combines as a scalar regardless of the network topology.
Note that in an ideal capacitor network with no resistance, the energy supplied by the battery equals the stored energy; however, in real circuits, resistive losses must be considered during charging.
8. Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law in Capacitor Circuits |
Kirchhoff’s voltage law (KVL) states that the algebraic sum of potential differences around any closed loop is zero. For a loop containing a battery and several capacitors, the supply voltage equals the sum of the individual capacitor voltages. This principle is used to derive the series relationship and to formulate equations for multi‑loop networks.
When combined with charge conservation at nodes, KVL produces a set of simultaneous equations. Solving these yields the charges and voltages on all capacitors. For steady‑state DC conditions, no current flows, so KVL applies directly to the capacitor voltages. This approach is particularly powerful for circuits that cannot be reduced by simple series‑parallel combinations.
