📚 Comparing Gravitational and Electric Fields |
In A-Level Physics, gravitational and electric fields are both examples of force fields that influence objects without direct contact. They share striking similarities in their mathematical descriptions, yet arise from fundamentally different properties: mass and charge. Understanding the parallels and differences between these two fields deepens our grasp of classical physics and prepares students for more advanced topics in electromagnetism and gravitation.
1. Fundamental Nature and Sources |
Gravitational fields are produced by masses and act on other masses. Every object with mass creates a gravitational field around it, and the field extends to infinity. Electric fields are produced by electric charges and act on other charges. Crucially, mass comes only in one 'type' while charge exists in two distinct signs: positive and negative. This simple fact leads to a profound contrast: gravitational forces are always attractive, whereas electric forces can be attractive or repulsive.
2. Force Law and Direction |
Both fields obey an inverse square force law between point sources. For gravitation, Newton's law states that the force between two point masses m₁ and m₂ separated by distance r is
F = G m₁ m₂ / r²
directed along the line joining the centres of mass, and is always attractive. For electrostatics, Coulomb's law gives the force between two point charges Q₁ and Q₂ as
F = k Q₁ Q₂ / r² where k = 1/(4πε₀)
The direction of the electric force depends on the sign of the charges: opposite charges attract, like charges repel. Thus, the electric force vector can point either way along the line of centres, while the gravitational force vector always points towards the source mass.
F = G m₁ m₂ / r²
F = k Q₁ Q₂ / r² 其中 k = 1/(4πε₀)
3. Field Strength Definitions |
Gravitational field strength g at a point is defined as the force per unit mass acting on a small test mass placed at that point:
g = F / m
It is a vector quantity and its direction is the direction of the force on the test mass, i.e. towards the source mass. Electric field strength E is defined as the force per unit positive charge acting on a small positive test charge:
E = F / q
The direction of E is the direction of the force on a positive test charge. For a positive source charge, E points radially outward; for a negative source charge, E points radially inward. The SI units also reflect the difference: N/kg for g and N/C (or V/m) for E.
g = F / m
E = F / q
4. Inverse Square Law for Radial Fields |
For a point mass M or any spherically symmetric distribution of mass, the gravitational field strength at a distance r from the centre is
g = GM / r²
Similarly, for a point charge Q, the magnitude of the electric field strength at a distance r is
E = kQ / r² = Q / (4πε₀ r²)
Both display inverse square behaviour: if the distance doubles, the field strength drops to one quarter. Plots of g or E against 1/r² yield straight lines through the origin for ideal point sources. This mathematical parallel allows many of the same techniques – such as flux considerations and Gauss's law – to be applied to both fields, although the underlying physics differs.
g = GM / r²
E = kQ / r² = Q / (4πε₀ r²)
5. Potential and Potential Energy |
Both fields are conservative, which means the work done in moving a test object between two points is independent of the path taken. The gravitational potential Vg at a point is the work done per unit mass in bringing a small test mass from infinity to that point:
Vg = – GM / r
With the zero of potential taken at infinity, Vg is always negative. The electric potential V due to a point charge Q is the work done per unit positive charge:
V = kQ / r = Q / (4πε₀ r)
the sign of Q. Potential energy relationships are directly analogous: for gravity U = m Vg r electricity U = q V. In both cases, the force is the negative gradient of potential: g = –dV_g/dr and E = –dV/dr along a radial line.
Vg = – GM / r
V = kQ / r = Q / (4πε₀ r)
6. Equipotential Surfaces | 等势面
Equipotential surfaces are surfaces on which the potential is constant. For a point mass or point charge, these surfaces are concentric spheres centred on the source. Field lines are always perpendicular to equipotential surfaces. In a uniform gravitational field, equipotential surfaces are horizontal planes; in a uniform electric field between parallel plates, they are planes parallel to the plates. No work is done when moving along an equipotential surface because the change in potential is zero. This holds for both gravitational and electric cases.
7. Uniform Fields and Parallel Plates |
cal situations, fields can be treated as uniform over a limited region. Close to the Earth' 1 N/kg and field lines vertical and equally spaced. A uniform electric field can be produced by applying a potential difference V across two parallel conducting plates separated by a small distance d. The field strength is then constant:
E = V / d
The field lines run straight from the positive plate to the negative plate, perpendicular to the plate surfaces. This arrangement is widely used to accelerate or deflect charged particles, for example in oscilloscopes and inkjet printers.
E = V / d
8. Motion of Charged Particles vs. Masses in Uniform Fields |
a parabola, determined solely by initial velocity and g, independent of the mass of the object. In a uniform electric field, a particle of charge q and mass m experiences a force F = qE. Its acceleration is a = qE/m, which depends on the charge-to-mass ratio q/m. Electrons, with their very large q/m, are easily deflected. The parabolic path of a charged particle moving between deflecting plates can be analysed using the same kinematic equations as projectile motion, but with a replaced by qE/m.
9. Superposition Principle |
Both gravitational and electric fields obey the principle of superposition. The resultant field at any point is the vector sum of the fields that would be produced by each source individually. For several masses, gtotal = g₁ + g₂ + g₃ + ... . For several point charges, Etotal ion to the sign and direction of each contribution. This principle is essential for calculating the field due to an extended body or a system of charges, such as the Earth's gravitational field or the electric dipole field.
10. Field Line Representation |
Field lines are a powerful visual tool for both fields. The spacing of lines represents field strength: closer lines indicate a stronger field. For radial fields, lines radiate outwards from a positive charge or inwards towards a negative charge or a mass. An important distinction: gravitational field lines always point towards the source mass, reflecting the always-attractive nature of gravity. Electric field lines, however, start on positive charges and end on negative charges, and can be closed loops in induced fields (beyond the scope of this comparison). The number of lines crossing a given area is proportional to the flux, which can be connected to the enclosed source using Gauss's law.
11. Shielding and Materials |
A remarkable contrast exists in how materials interact with these fields. Electric fields can be completely blocked inside a conductor in electrostatic equilibrium (the Faraday cage effect). Conductors reshuffle their free charges to cancel external fields within the enclosure. Dielectrics weaken the electric field by a factor equal to the relative permittivity εᵣ. No analogous shielding exists for gravity. Gravitational fields pass through all known materials without absorption or reflection, and no material has been found that can act as a gravitational insulator. This asymmetry arises because mass has only one sign, preventing a redistribution that cancels an external field, and because there is no 'gravitational permittivity' in standard physics.
