📚 Damped Oscillations |
In an ideal simple harmonic oscillator, the motion would continue forever with constant amplitude. However, in real physical systems, resistive forces such as friction or air resistance cause energy to be gradually removed from the oscillating system. The amplitude of oscillation decreases over time, and the motion is said to be damped. Damped oscillations are fundamental to understanding how mechanical and electrical systems behave under realistic conditions, and they form a key part of the CIE A-Level Physics syllabus.
1. What Are Damped Oscillations? |
Damped oscillations occur when an oscillating system continuously loses energy to its surroundings, usually through a resistive force that opposes the motion. As energy is dissipated, both the displacement amplitude and the total mechanical energy decrease with time. Unlike free oscillations that maintain a steady amplitude, damped oscillations eventually die out unless an external driving force is applied.
2. The Damped Harmonic Oscillator Equation |
The motion of a damped harmonic oscillator is described by a second-order differential equation that includes a velocity-dependent damping term. For a mass m attached to a spring of stiffness k and moving through a medium that provides a resistive force proportional to velocity, –bv, the equation of motion is:
m (d²x/dt²) + b (dx/dt) + kx = 0
rmines how quickly energy is dissipated, while k/m sets the natural angular frequency ω₀ = √k/m of the undamped system.
3. Classification of Damping |
classified according to the magnitude of the damping coefficient b relative to the system' ndary between underdamped and overdamped motion is defined by the condition b² = 4mk, where the discriminant of the characteristic equation becomes zero.
4. Light Damping (Underdamped) |
tes, but the amplitude gradually decreases. The displacement can be written as x(t) = A₀ e–bt/(2m) cos(ω't + φ), where the angular frequency ω' = √(ω₀² – n remains periodic in the sense that successive zero crossings are equally spaced in time.
5. Critical Damping |
Critical damping occurs when b² = 4mk, giving b = 2√mk ortest possible time without oscillating. The displacement is of the form x(t) = (A + Bt)e–ω₀t. Critical damping is deliberately designed into many engineering devices, such as car suspension systems and moving-coil meters, where a rapid, non-oscillatory return to zero is essential.
位移形式为 x(t) = (A + Bt)e–ω₀t。
6. Heavy Damping (Overdamped) |
When the damping coefficient is further increased such that b² > 4mk, the motion becomes overdamped. The system does not oscillate at all; instead, it creeps slowly back to equilibrium. The displacement is a sum of two exponentially decaying terms, and the return to zero is slower than in the critically damped case. Heavy damping is found in systems like door closers or heavily oiled hydraulic mechanisms, where a slow, controlled motion is desirable.
7. Amplitude Decay and Time Constant |
mped oscillations, the amplitude A decreases exponentially with time according to A = A₀ e–t/τ is the amplitude time constant. After one time constant τ, the amplitude falls to about 37% nt provides a convenient measure of how quickly the oscillations die away: a larger τ means lighter damping and a longer-lasting oscillation.
在轻阻尼振荡中,振幅 A 随时间按指数衰减,遵循 A = A₀ e–t/τ,其中 τ = 2m/b 是振幅时间常数。
8. Logarithmic Decrement |
m of the ratio of two successive peak amplitudes: δ = ln(Aₙ / Aₙ₊₁). For a lightly damped system, δ = bT/(2m), where T is the period of the damped oscillation. Experimentally, δ can be obtained easily from a displacement–me graph by measuring the peak heights, providing a direct link to the damping constant b.
9. Energy Dissipation and the Q-Factor |
energy of a damped oscillator is proportional to the square of the amplitude, so E = E₀ e–t/τₑ d in the oscillator to the energy lost per radian of oscillation. For a lightly damped oscillator, Q = ω₀τₑ/2 = ω₀m/b. A high Q indicates low damping and sharp resonance, while a low Q corresponds to strongly damped, broad resonance behaviour.
10. Real-World Examples of Damped Oscillations |
Damped oscillations appear across a wide range of everyday and engineering contexts. A child on a swing that gradually slows down, the needle of a galvanometer that returns to zero without overshooting, and the suspension of a vehicle absorbing bumps all rely on damping. In electronics, an RLC circuit with a resistor provides an electrical analogue of the damped mechanical oscillator, with resistance playing the role of the damping coefficient b. Understanding damping helps engineers design stable structures, comfortable vehicles, and accurate instruments.
