📚 Angular Velocity | 角速度
In A-Level Physics, angular velocity is a fundamental concept used to describe rotational motion quantitatively. Whether examining a spinning top, a planet orbiting a star, or a particle moving in a circle, angular velocity tells us how rapidly the angle changes with time. It bridges the gap between linear and rotational kinematics, linking the familiar speed of a point on a rotating object to the rate at which the whole body turns. Mastering angular velocity opens the door to understanding centripetal acceleration, circular motion dynamics, and even the vector nature of rotation.
1. Angular Displacement and Radian Measure |
Before defining angular velocity, we must recall angular displacement θ. It is the angle through which an object moves along a circular path, measured from a chosen reference line. Unlike everyday angle measurements in degrees, physics uses radians for circular motion because they provide a direct relationship between the distance travelled along the arc and the radius.
One radian (rad) is defined as the angle subtended at the centre of a circle by an arc equal in length to the radius. In symbols, 952; = s / r, where s is arc length and r is radius. Since the circumference of a full circle is 2πr, a complete revolution corresponds to an angular displacement of 2π radians.
For example, a quarter of a circle corresponds to π/2 rad, and half a circle corresponds to π rad. Recognising radian measure is essential because it treats angular displacement as a dimensionless ratio, yet we keep the unit 'rad' to remind ourselves that the quantity describes an angle.
2. Defining Angular Velocity |
Angular velocity ω is the rate of change of angular displacement. For a time interval Δt during which the angular displacement changes by Δθ, the average angular velocity is ωav = Δθ / Δt. The instantaneous angular velocity is given by the limit 969; = dθ/dt. It is the rotational analogue of linear velocity.
969; = Δθ / Δt
Angular velocity describes how fast an object rotates or revolves. If an object completes more radians per second, it has a larger angular velocity. It can be positive or negative depending on the direction of rotation (clockwise or anticlockwise), but its magnitude answers the question "how quickly is it spinning?".
3. Units of Angular Velocity |
Since angular displacement is measured in radians and time in seconds, the SI unit of angular velocity is the radian per second (rad s⁻¹). Because the radian is a dimensionless derived unit, the angular velocity unit is effectively s⁻¹, but we keep 'rad' for clarity. In many engineering contexts, angular speed is also expressed in revolutions per minute (rpm), but physics problems consistently require rad s⁻¹ to maintain consistency with other formulas.
A table of typical angular velocities helps to appreciate the range of rotational motion:
| Object / Motion | ω (rad s⁻¹) |
|---|---|---|
| Earth's rotation about its axis | 7.3 × 10⁻⁵ |
| Second hand of a clock | π/30 ≈ 0.105 |
| Car engine at 3000 rpm | 3000 × 2960;/60 = 314 | 汽车发动机3000 rpm |
| Hard disk drive (7200 rpm) | 7200 × 2π/60 ≈ 754 | 硬盘7200 rpm |
Notice how even a hand of a clock has a finite angular velocity, while Earth's rotation is very slow in rad s⁻¹ terms. Converting from rpm to rad s⁻¹ is a common skill: multiply by 2π and divide by 60.
4. Relationship with Linear Velocity |
One of the most important connections in rotational kinematics is between angular velocity ω and the linear (tangential) speed v of a point at distance r from the axis of rotation. As the object rotates through a small angle Δθ in time Δt, the point moves along an arc of length 916;s = r Δθ.
Dividing by Δt gives v = Δs/916;t = r (Δθ/916;t) = r ω. The formula is therefore:
v = r ω
This holds for any rigid body rotating about a fixed axis; all points on the body have the same angular velocity ω, but their linear speeds increase with distance from the axis. The linear velocity vector is always tangential to the circular path, whereas the angular velocity vector is perpendicular to the plane of rotation.
For example, if a wheel of radius 0.3 m spins at 969; = 10 rad s⁻¹, a point on the rim has speed v = 0.3 × 10 = 3.0 m s⁻¹. Points closer to the centre have lower linear speeds, which explains why the outer edge of a CD spins faster than a point near the centre in terms of linear distance covered per second.
5. Period, Frequency, and Angular Velocity |
For any object moving in a circular path at constant angular velocity, the motion is periodic: the object repeats its position after a certain time interval called the period T. During one period, it sweeps out an angle of 2π radians. Hence 969; = 2π / T.
The frequency f is the number of complete revolutions per second, given by f = 1/T. Consequently, angular velocity can be expressed in terms of frequency:
969; = 2π f
instance, the minute hand of a clock has a period of 3600 s, so its angular velocity is 969; = 2π/3600 ≈ 1.745 × 10⁻³ rad s⁻¹. A rotation of 50 revolutions per second corresponds to 969; = 2π 215; 50 = 100π rad s⁻¹.
Students often find it helpful to remember that 969; = 2π/T and 969; = 2&# ven information relates to period or frequency. Both forms assume the rotation is uniform.
6. Angular Velocity in Uniform Circular Motion |
Uniform circular motion occurs when an object moves in a circle at constant speed. Although the linear speed is constant, the velocity vector changes direction continuously, meaning the object is accelerating. In such motion, the magnitude of the angular velocity ω remains constant.
If we describe the position of the particle by an angle θ that changes linearly with time, we can write 952;(t) = θ₀ + ωt. Here θ constant angular velocity makes it easy to predict the angular position at any later time.
Because ω is constant, the linear speed of a point at radius r is also constant: v = r&# r motion model is the foundation for many topics, including orbital motion and charged particles in magnetic fields.
7. Vector Nature of Angular Velocity |
Although at A-Level we often treat angular velocity as a scalar magnitude, it is technically a vector quantity. The direction of the angular velocity vector ω is given by the right-hand rule: curl the fingers of your right hand in the direction of rotation; your thumb points in the direction of ω.
For a rotation in the anticlockwise direction as viewed from above, ω points upwards along the axis of rotation. For clockwise rotation, it points downwards. This vector direction is perpendicular to the plane of rotation, which explains why angular velocity and linear velocity are so different: linear velocity is tangential, while angular velocity is axial.
Treating ω as a vector becomes particularly important when discussing angular acceleration, torque, and angular momentum in more advanced physics. For CIE A-Level, it is enough to know that angular velocity has a defined direction according to the right-hand rule, even if calculations use only its magnitude.
