📚 Fundamental Particles | 基本粒子
The quest to understand what matter is ultimately made of has driven physicists to uncover a remarkably simple set of fundamental particles. In the Standard Model of particle physics, fundamental particles are those that, as far as we know, cannot be divided into anything smaller. They include quarks, leptons, gauge bosons, and the Higgs boson. This article provides a thorough exploration of these building blocks, their properties, and the conservation rules that govern them, tailored to the CIE A-Level Physics syllabus.
对物质最终由什么构成的探索,促使物理学家揭示了一套极其简洁的基本粒子。在粒子物理学的标准模型中,基本粒子是我们目前所知无法再分割的更小单元。它们包括夸克、轻子、规范玻色子和希格斯玻色子。本文深度剖析这些基本构造单元的性质及相关守恒定律,紧扣 CIE A-Level 物理考纲。
1. The Standard Model: An Ordered Particle Zoo | 标准模型:有序的粒子动物园
The Standard Model classifies fundamental particles into two main groups: fermions (matter particles) and bosons (force carriers and the Higgs). Fermions are further divided into quarks and leptons, each coming in three generations. The model successfully describes three of the four fundamental forces – electromagnetic, weak, and strong – but does not include gravity.
标准模型将基本粒子分为两大类:费米子(物质粒子)和玻色子(力的传递者及希格斯粒子)。费米子又分为夸克和轻子,各自有三代。这个模型成功描述了四种基本力中的三种——电磁力、弱力和强力,但不包括引力。
All ordinary matter is made from first-generation particles: up and down quarks, electrons, and electron neutrinos. The second and third generations are heavier and unstable, typically observed only in high-energy experiments such as cosmic ray interactions or particle accelerators.
所有普通物质都由第一代粒子构成:上夸克、下夸克、电子和电子中微子。第二代和第三代粒子质量更大、不稳定,通常只在宇宙线或粒子加速器等高能实验中才被观察到。
2. Quarks: The First Family of Matter | 夸克:物质的第一家族
Quarks are never found in isolation due to colour confinement; they combine to form hadrons. There are six flavours of quarks: up (u), down (d), charm (c), strange (s), top (t) and bottom (b). Each quark carries a fractional electric charge – either +⅔e or −⅓e – and a baryon number of +⅓.
由于色禁闭,夸克永远无法孤立存在;它们结合形成强子。夸克共有六种“味道”:上 (u)、下 (d)、粲 (c)、奇 (s)、顶 (t) 和底 (b)。每个夸克携带分数电荷——+⅔e 或 −⅓e——以及 +⅓ 的重子数。
The table below summarises the key quantum numbers of the six quarks. Antiquarks have opposite signs for charge, baryon number, and strangeness (or charm, bottomness, topness) where applicable.
下表总结了六种夸克的关键量子数。对应的反夸克在电荷、重子数和奇异数(或粲数、底数、顶数)上符号相反。
| Quark | Symbol | Charge (e) | Baryon number | Strangeness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up | u | +⅔ | +⅓ | 0 |
| Down | d | −⅓ | +⅓ | 0 |
| Charm | c | +⅔ | +⅓ | 0 |
| Strange | s | −⅓ | +⅓ | −1 |
| Top | t | +⅔ | +⅓ | 0 |
| Bottom | b | −⅓ | +⅓ | 0 |
Notice that strangeness is only defined for the strange quark (−1) and its antiparticle (+1). Charm, bottom and top quarks carry their own conserved quantum numbers in strong interactions, but these are less prominent in the A-Level syllabus.
注意奇异数只为奇夸克(−1)及其反粒子(+1)定义。粲夸克、底夸克和顶夸克在强相互作用中有各自守恒的量子数,但它们在 A-Level 考纲中地位较低。
3. Leptons: Electrons, Muons, Taus and Neutrinos | 轻子:电子、μ子、τ子和中微子
Leptons are fundamental fermions that do not experience the strong interaction. There are six leptons: the electron (e⁻), muon (μ⁻), tau (τ⁻) and their associated neutrinos (νe, νμ, ντ). Each charged lepton has a partner neutral neutrino of the same generation.
轻子是不参与强相互作用的基本费米子。共有六种轻子:电子 (e⁻)、μ子 (μ⁻)、τ子 (τ⁻) 以及它们对应的中微子 (νe, νμ, ντ)。每一个带电轻子都有一个同代的中性中微子相伴。
The electron is stable and makes up the outer part of atoms. The muon and tau are heavier and decay via the weak interaction into lighter leptons and neutrinos. Lepton number is conserved in three separate flavours: Le, Lμ, Lτ.
电子是稳定的,构成了原子的外围。μ子和τ子质量更大,会通过弱相互作用衰变成更轻的轻子和中微子。轻子数分三种味分别守恒:Le、Lμ、Lτ。
n number for each flavour is conserved. For example, in neutron beta decay (n → p + e⁻ + ν̅e), an electron (Le = +1) is produced alongside an electron antineutrino (Le = −1), keeping the net electron lepton number zero.
在任何反应中,每一代的轻子数都守恒。例如,在中子β衰变 (n → p + e⁻ + νe) 中,产生一个电子 (Le = +1) 和一个反电子中微子 (Le = −1),净电子轻子数保持为零。
4. Antiparticles: Mirror Images of Matter | 反粒子:物质的镜像
Every fundamental particle has a corresponding antiparticle with the same mass but opposite charge and opposite quantum numbers such as baryon number and lepton number. For example, the positron (e⁺) is the antiparticle of the electron; it has charge +e and Le = −1.
每一种基本粒子都有对应的反粒子,质量相同但电荷、重子数、轻子数等量子数符号相反。例如,正电子 (e⁺) 是电子的反粒子,电荷为 +e,Le = −1。
Antiparticles are denoted by a bar over the symbol, e.g. antiproton (p), antineutron (n), or anti-up quark (u). When a particle and its antiparticle meet, they annihilate, converting their mass into energy in the form of photons or other particles.
反粒子用符号上方加横线表示,如反质子 (p)、反中子 (n) 或反上夸克 (u)。粒子与反粒子相遇时会发生湮灭,质量转化为光子或其他粒子形式的能量。
In the A-Level context, you must be able to apply conservation laws to identify whether a reaction is possible. Annihilation and pair production are classic examples where energy and momentum conservation work together with charge and lepton/baryon number conservation.
在 A-Level 的语境中,你必须能运用守恒定律来判断一个反应是否可能。湮灭和粒子对产生是经典例子,其中能量与动量守恒同电荷及轻子/重子数守恒共同作用。
5. Gauge Bosons: Force Carriers | 规范玻色子:力的传递者
Forces in the Standard Model are mediated by the exchange of gauge bosons. The photon (γ) mediates the electromagnetic force, the W⁺, W⁻ and Z⁰ bosons mediate the weak force, and gluons (g) mediate the strong force. All are fundamental and have spin 1.
标准模型中的力通过规范玻色子的交换来传递。光子 (γ) 传递电磁力,W⁺、W⁻ 和 Z⁰ 玻色子传递弱力,胶子 (g) 传递强力。它们都是基本粒子,自旋为 1。
The W and Z bosons are massive (about 80–90 GeV/c²), which explains the short range of the weak interaction. Photons and gluons are massless, giving electromagnetism and the strong force infinite range in principle, though colour confinement restricts the strong force to about 10⁻¹⁵ m.
W 和 Z 玻色子具有质量(约 80–90 GeV/c²),这解释了弱力的短程性。光子和胶子无质量,原则上使电磁力和强力具有无限作用范围,但色禁闭将强力的作用范围限制在约 10⁻¹⁵ 米。
Gluons carry colour charge themselves, unlike photons which are electrically neutral. This leads to gluon self-interaction and makes the strong force far more complex than electromagnetism.
胶子本身携带色荷,不同于电中性的光子。这导致胶子自相互作用,使强力远比电磁力复杂。
6. The Higgs Boson and Mass | 希格斯玻色子与质量
The Higgs boson (H⁰) is a scalar boson with spin 0, discovered at CERN in 2012. It is associated with the Higgs field, which permeates all of space. Particles acquire mass through their interaction with this field; the stronger the coupling, the greater the mass.
希格斯玻色子 (H⁰) 是自旋为 0 的标量玻色子,于 2012 年在 CERN 被发现。它与充满全空间的希格斯场相关联。粒子通过与该场的相互作用获得质量;耦合越强,质量越大。
Without the Higgs mechanism, the W and Z bosons would be massless, and the weak force would be long-range, contradicting observation. The photon does not couple to the Higgs field and remains massless, preserving the infinite range of electromagnetism.
没有希格斯机制,W 和 Z 玻色子将无质量,弱力将成为长程力,与实验观测矛盾。光子不与希格斯场耦合,保持零质量,维持了电磁力的无限范围。
7. Hadrons: Composite Particles Made of Quarks | 强子:由夸克构成的复合粒子
Hadrons are particles made of quarks bound by the strong force. They are divided into two families: baryons (three quarks, qqq) and mesons (quark–antiquark pair, qq). Protons (uud) and neutrons (udd) are the most familiar baryons.
强子是由夸克通过强力结合而成的粒子,分为两类:重子(三个夸克,qqq)和介子(夸克–反夸克对,qq)。质子 (uud) 和中子 (udd) 是最常见的重子。
Examples of mesons include pions: π⁺ (ud), π⁻ (ud) and π⁰ (uu or dd). Kaons also appear frequently in exam questions: K⁺ (us), K⁻ (us), K⁰ (ds) and anti-K⁰ (ds). Mesons have baryon number 0.
介子的例子包括 π 介子:π⁺ (ud)、π⁻ (ud) 和 π⁰ (uu 或 dd)。考题中也常见 K 介子:K⁺ (us)、K⁻ (us)、K⁰ (ds) 和反 K⁰ (ds)。介子的重子数为 0。
All hadrons are colour neutral: baryons have one red, one green and one blue quark (or anticolours for antibaryons), while mesons consist of a colour–anticolour pair. This requirement explains why isolated quarks cannot be observed.
所有强子都是色中性的:重子有一个红夸克、一个绿夸克和一个蓝夸克(反重子则为反颜色),而介子由一对颜色–反颜色组成。这一要求解释了为何无法观测到孤立夸克。
8. Conservation Laws: Baryon Number, Lepton Number and Strangeness | 守恒定律:重子数、轻子数和奇异数
ark, and 0 for leptons and bosons. Thus protons and neutrons have B = 1, and mesons have B = 0.
粒子相互作用遵循严格的守恒定律。重子数 (B) 在所有相互作用中守恒。每个夸克 B = +⅓,每个反夸克 B = −⅓,轻子和玻色子 B = 0。因此质子和中子 B = 1,介子 B = 0。
Lepton number is conserved separately for each flavour: Le, Lμ and Lτ. For a lepton like e⁻, Le = +1; for its antineutrino, Le muons decay into electrons only when accompanied by the appropriate neutrinos: μ⁻ → e⁻ + ν̅e + νμ.
轻子数按三种味分别守恒:Le、Lμ 和 Lτ。对于 e⁻ 这样的轻子,Le = +1;其反中微子的 Le = −1。这解释了为什么 μ 子衰变成电子时必定伴有相应的中微子:μ⁻ → e⁻ + νe + νμ。
ctions. Kaons, which contain a strange quark, are produced through the strong force in pairs (associated production) to conserve overall strangeness, yet they decay via the weak force, changing S.
奇异数 (S) 在强和电磁相互作用中守恒,但在弱相互作用中可改变 0 或 ±1。含有奇夸克的 K 介子通过强力成对产生(协同产生)以保持总奇异数守恒,但它们通过弱力衰变,改变了 S。
9. Interactions and Exchange Particles | 相互作用与交换粒子
olve photon exchange between charged particles. Weak interactions involve W⁺, W⁻ or Z⁰ bosons, allowing flavour change (e.g. d → u + W⁻).
每一种基本相互作用都可以用费曼图表示,图中显示了虚玻色子的交换。电磁相互作用涉及带电粒子间的光子交换。弱相互作用涉及 W⁺、W⁻ 或 Z⁰ 玻色子,允许味的改变(如 d → u + W⁻)。
Strong interactions occur via gluon exchange between colour charges. The most familiar consequence is the binding of quarks inside hadrons and the residual strong force that holds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus (mediated by virtual pions).
强相互作用通过色荷之间的胶子交换发生。最常见的结果是夸克在强子内部的束缚,以及将原子核中质子和中子结合在一起的剩余强力(由虚 π 介子传递)。
that then decays into an electron and an electron antineutrino: n (udd) → p (uud) + e⁻ + ν̅e. This illustrates both flavour change and the weak force.
在 β⁻ 衰变中,中子里的一个下夸克转变为上夸克,放出一个 W⁻ 玻色子,该玻色子再衰变为一个电子和一个反电子中微子:n (udd) → p (uud) + e⁻ + νe。这同时展示了味的改变和弱力。
10. Quark Confinement and Colour Charge | 夸克禁闭与色荷
Quarks possess a property called colour charge: red, green, or blue. Antiquarks carry anticolour. The strong force between quarks is mediated by eight types of gluons, and
