📚 Matter and Materials |
Matter is the foundation of physics. It refers to anything that has mass and takes up space, from the air we breathe to the metals in a bridge. Understanding how materials respond to forces is essential for designing safe and efficient structures. In the Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics syllabus, the topic "Matter and Materials" covers density, elasticity, stress, strain, the Young modulus, and the mechanical behaviour of solids. This article will guide you through the key concepts, helping you link microscopic structure with macroscopic properties.
1. Introduction to Matter and Materials |
Matter exists in various states: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Materials are specific types of matter chosen for a purpose based on their mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties. In physics we often simplify by concentrating on how solids deform under load. This deformation can be elastic (recoverable) or plastic (permanent). By studying the relationship between force, extension, stress and strain, we can predict when a material will fail.
2. Density and Its Measurement |
gular solids, volume is calculated from linear dimensions; for irregular objects, volume is measured by displacement of water in a measuring cylinder. Knowing the density helps to identify materials and to predict whether an object will float or sink.
3. Hooke's Law and the Spring Constant |
This is Hooke’s law: F = k e. The constant k is the spring constant (or stiffness) measured in N m⁻¹. A graph of force against extension is a straight line through the origin; the gradient equals k. The area under this graph represents the work done in stretching the spring.
4. Elastic and Plastic Deformation |
Elastic deformation is reversible: the material returns to its original shape when the load is removed. Plastic deformation is permanent; the material does not regain its original dimensions. The elastic limit marks the transition. At the atomic level, elastic deformation involves small displacements of atoms from their equilibrium positions within the interatomic force field, while plastic deformation involves the slipping of atomic planes, leading to irreversible changes.
5. Stress, Strain and Young Modulus |
, we use stress and strain. Tensile stress σ = F / A, where F is the force and A the cross‑ is pascal (Pa) or N m⁻². Because E is a property of the material, it is much more useful than the spring constant for comparing different materials.
拉伸应力 σ = F / A,其中 F 是力,A 是截面积。
σ = F / A ε = ΔL / L₀ E = (F L₀) / (A ΔL) Unit: Pa
1.0 × 10⁻³ / 2.0 = 5.0 × 10⁻⁴. The Young modulus is then 1.0 × 10¹¹ Pa, typical for steel.
6. Stress–Strain Curves for Ductile and Brittle Materials |
A stress–strain graph reveals a material’s character. For a ductile metal such as mild steel, the curve shows a linear elastic region, a yield point (often accompanied by a small stress drop), a region of plastic flow, strain hardening, necking and finally fracture. The maximum stress is the ultimate tensile strength (UTS). A brittle material like glass or cast iron exhibits little or no plastic deformation; its stress–strain curve is almost linear up to fracture, with no distinct yield point.
In ductile curves, the area under the graph up to fracture represents the energy per unit volume absorbed before failure – a measure of toughness. Brittle materials absorb much less energy.
7. Tensile Strength and Breaking Stress |
The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is the maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched before breaking. It is read directly from the stress–strain curve. The breaking stress (fracture stress) is the stress at the point of fracture. For design purposes, engineers use a safe working stress well below the UTS, applying a factor of safety.
The yield stress is the stress at which permanent deformation begins. For materials without a clear yield point, a proof stress (often 0.2 % strain) is used.
8. Ductility, Brittleness and Energy Absorption |
Ductility refers to the ability of a material to be drawn into a wire, undergoing large plastic deformation before fracture. Brittleness means the material fractures with very little plastic deformation. Examples of ductile materials: copper, aluminium, mild steel. Brittle materials: glass, ceramic, cast iron.
A ductile material deforms plastically, absorbing lots of energy; this makes it suitable for car crumple zones. A brittle material can be strong in compression but weak in tension, which is why concrete is often reinforced with steel.
9. Strain Energy and Elastic Hysteresis |
beying Hooke’s law, strain energy E = ½ F e = ½ k e². This equals the area under the force–extension graph. In a stress–strain context, the elastic strain energy per unit volume is ½ × stress × strain = ½ σ ε.
If a material is loaded beyond its elastic limit and then unloaded, the unloading curve does not retrace the loading curve. The area enclosed represents energy dissipated as heat – this is elastic hysteresis.
10. Classification of Engineering Materials |
| Type | Examples | Key Mechanical Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Metals | Steel, aluminium, copper | Ductile, high UTS, crystalline structure, yield point |
| Ceramics | Glass, porcelain, alumina | Brittle, high compressive strength, low tensile strength, stiff |
| Polymers | Rubber, polythene, nylon | Viscoelastic, large elastic strains possible, temperature‑dependent |
Metals are widely used because they can be shaped plastically and offer high toughness. Ceramics are chosen for their hardness and resistance to heat but are easily broken by sudden impacts. Polymers can be designed for flexibility (elastomers) or rigidity, and their stress–strain behaviour is highly nonlinear.
