📚 Identifying Forces | 识别力
Forces are at the heart of classical mechanics. In order to apply Newton's laws correctly, you must first identify every force acting on an object. This skill is fundamental in CIE A-Level Physics, from simple static equilibrium to complex dynamics problems involving inclines, pulleys and connected bodies. A clear understanding of the types of forces, their origins and how to represent them in free-body diagrams will set the foundation for solving any mechanics question with confidence.
1. What Is a Force? |
A force is a push or a pull that results from the interaction between two objects. It is a vector quantity, which means it has both magnitude and direction. The SI unit of force is the newton (N). One newton is the force required to give a 1 kg mass an acceleration of 1 m s⁻². In equation form, this is expressed by Newton's second law:
F = ma
Forces can cause objects to accelerate, decelerate, change direction or deform. When analysing a physical situation, we treat the object of interest as a point mass and draw all the forces acting on it. Always ask: 'What is touching the object?' and 'What non-contact forces are present?' This systematic approach prevents missing hidden forces.
2. Contact and Non-contact Forces |
Forces can be classified into two broad categories: contact forces, which require physical touching, and non-contact forces, which act at a distance. In most mechanics problems at A-Level, we deal mainly with contact forces such as normal reaction, tension, friction and elastic forces; the dominant non-contact force is weight (gravity). Electric and magnetic forces do appear in some contexts but are usually described qualitatively.
Contact forces arise from electromagnetic interactions between atoms at the surfaces of objects. Even when a table pushes up on a book, it is the electrons in the table repelling the electrons in the book. However, at our level, we model these forces simply as vectors pointing in specific directions. Recognising whether a force is contact or non-contact helps you decide whether it disappears when objects separate: normal and frictional forces vanish instantly on loss of contact, whereas weight remains.
3. Weight (Gravitational Force) |
Weight is the gravitational force exerted by the Earth (or another planet) on a mass. It always acts vertically downwards towards the centre of the Earth and is given by:
W = mg
where m is the mass in kilograms and g is the gravitational field strength. At the Earth's surface, g is approximately 9.81 m s⁻², but CIE often uses 9.8 m s⁻² or 10 m s⁻², depending on the question. Weight is a non-contact force. Even a freely falling object still experiences weight, though it may appear 'weightless' because there is no contact force opposing its motion.
When drawing free-body diagrams, weight is always represented by a downward arrow starting from the centre of mass. Do not confuse mass (a scalar, measured in kg) with weight (a vector, measured in N). Weight changes if g changes; mass does not. This distinction is frequently tested.
4. Normal Reaction Force |
When an object presses against a solid surface, the surface exerts a contact force perpendicular to itself. This force is called the normal reaction or normal contact force. Its direction is always normal (at 90°) to the surface, pushing away from the surface. The magnitude of the normal force adjusts automatically to balance other perpendicular forces, provided the surface is strong enough.
cos θ, because only the component of weight perpendicular to the slope needs balancing. A common mistake is to always equate normal force with weight – always resolve forces perpendicular to the contact surface to find R.
5. Tension | 张力
Tension is the pulling force transmitted through a string, rope, cable or chain when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends. It is directed along the length of the connector and pulls equally on the objects at both ends. In CIE problems, we often assume the string is light (massless) and inextensible. Under these idealisations, the tension is constant throughout the string and can be represented by a single value T.
When you draw tension, always show it pulling away from the object. A rope can only pull, never push. In pulley systems, the tension on either side of a smooth pulley is the same. If a rope passes over a rough pulley, tensions may differ, but most A-Level problems involve smooth or light pulleys so you can assume a single tension value.
6. Frictional Forces |
Friction is a contact force that opposes relative motion or the tendency for such motion between two surfaces. There are two main types: static friction, which acts when there is no relative motion, and kinetic (dynamic) friction, which acts when surfaces slide past each other. Both forces act parallel to the contact surface.
Static friction can vary from zero up to a maximum value given by:
fₛ ≤ μₛR
Kinetic friction is approximately constant and is given by:
fₖ = μₖR
Here R is the normal reaction force, μₛ is the coefficient of static friction and μₖ the coefficient of kinetic friction. Typically μₛ > μₖ. Friction always acts opposite to the direction of (potential) motion. When identifying forces, always ask whether the surface is rough or smooth. Smooth surfaces imply zero friction, a common simplification in exam questions.
7. Elastic Forces and Hooke’s Law |
Elastic forces arise when a spring or any other elastic object is stretched or compressed. The force exerted by a spring is a restoring force: it tries to return the spring to its natural length. According to Hooke’s law, within the elastic limit, the extension (or compression) is directly proportional to the applied force:
F = kΔx
where k is the spring constant (stiffness) and Δx is the change in length. The direction of the elastic force is always opposite to the displacement from the equilibrium position. In force identification, when you see a spring or an elastic band, include an arrow along the spring's axis pointing towards the natural length if extended, or away if compressed.
8. Drag Forces (Fluid Resistance) |
When an object moves through a fluid such as air or water, it experiences a resistance force called drag. Drag opposes the motion and increases with speed. At low speeds (laminar flow), drag is typically proportional to velocity; at higher speeds, it is proportional to the square of velocity. In many A-Level questions, you will see either a linear model Fd = kv or a quadratic one Fd = kv², where k is a constant that depends on the shape, size and the fluid properties.
Drag is a contact force because the fluid is in contact with the object. It cannot exist in a vacuum. Always include drag when an object moves through a fluid and the question indicates air resistance or viscous force is not negligible. Terminal velocity occurs when drag balances the driving force (like weight), giving a resultant force of zero.
9. Drawing Free-Body Diagrams |
A free-body diagram is a sketch showing a single object isolated from its surroundings, with all the forces acting on it represented by labelled arrows. This tool is indispensable for identifying forces correctly. Always follow these steps: (1) Treat the object as a point particle or draw its outline. (2) Draw weight vertically downwards from the centre. (3) Add normal forces perpendicular to contact surfaces. (4) Include friction parallel to surfaces if applicable. (5) Show tension pulling away along strings. (6) Draw any other forces, such as elastic or drag forces, with appropriate directions and labels.
Do not include forces exerted by the object on its surroundings. Every arrow on a free-body diagram acts on the object of interest. A common error is to draw both the weight and the normal reaction as an action–reaction pair; they are not a Newton’s third law pair unless they act on different objects.
10. Identifying Forces in Typical A-Level Problems | 典型A-Level问题中的力识别
on R perpendicular to the slope, and friction f acting up or down the slope opposing motion. Resolve mg into components: mg sin θ parallel to the slope and mg cos θ perpendicular to it. The net force determines acceleration using F = ma.
o: T − mg = ma for upward acceleration. In a lift, a passenger’s apparent weight is the normal reaction from the floor. This normal force changes when the lift accelerates: it is larger than mg during upward acceleration, smaller during downward acceleration, and equals mg when moving at constant velocity.
Connected bodies via a pulley: draw separate free-body diagrams for each mass. Identify tensions (same magnitude if string is light and pulley smooth), weights and any contact forces. Write equations of motion for each mass and solve simultaneously. Force identification is the first, non-negotiable step before any equation can be written.
Always double-check your force list: are there any forgotten forces like air resistance, spring forces, or thrust? Have you confused mass and weight? Re-draw the free-body diagram if in doubt; clarity here avoids algebraic mistakes later.
