📚 Nitrogen Gas: The Inert Backbone of Our Atmosphere |
Nitrogen gas is the silent majority of our atmosphere, surrounding us at all times yet rarely commanding attention. As the seventh most abundant element in the universe and the backbone of essential biomolecules, nitrogen's diatomic form (N₂) defines the very air we breathe. This article explores the structure, properties, reactions, and significance of nitrogen gas from a Cambridge A-Level Chemistry perspective.
1. Occurrence and Isolation |
Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in Earth's atmosphere, accounting for roughly 78% by volume. Despite its abundance, obtaining pure nitrogen on an industrial scale usually involves the fractional distillation of liquid air. Air is filtered, compressed, cooled to about -200 °C, and then separated in a fractionating column. Nitrogen, with a boiling point of -196 °C, distils off before oxygen (boiling point -183 °C) and argon. This yields high-purity nitrogen gas, which is stored in cylinders or used directly in chemical plants and metallurgical operations. Membrane separation and pressure-swing adsorption are also employed for smaller-scale, on-site generation.
2. Molecular Structure and Bonding |
A nitrogen molecule consists of two nitrogen atoms linked by a very strong triple covalent bond (N≡N), involving one sigma and two pi bonds. The bond dissociation enthalpy is +945 kJ mol⁻¹, one of the highest known for a diatomic molecule. The bond length is 109.8 pm, consistent with short multiple bonding. The molecule is non-polar and highly symmetric (D∞h). Its molecular orbital configuration shows a large energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), meaning significant energy is required to promote an electron for reaction. This electronic structure is the fundamental reason for nitrogen's resistance to chemical attack.
3. Physical Properties |
Nitrogen is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless diatomic gas under standard conditions. It is only sparingly soluble in water; about 2.3 cm³ of nitrogen dissolves in 100 g of water at 20 °C. Nitrogen is neither flammable nor does it support combustion, which is why it is used to extinguish fires in confined spaces, although it does not chemically extinguish flames. Its density at STP is 1.25 g dm⁻³, slightly less than that of air (1.29 g dm⁻³). Liquid nitrogen, obtained by further cooling, is a cryogenic fluid with a boiling point of -196 °C, widely used as a coolant and for preserving biological samples. Solid nitrogen exists at temperatures below -210 °C.
4. Chemical Inertness and Activation |
The exceptional thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the N≡N bond renders nitrogen virtually inert at room temperature. Reactions involving nitrogen gas typically require high temperatures, catalysts, or electrical discharges to overcome the large activation energy barrier. In the Haber process, an iron-based catalyst and temperatures around 450 °C are needed to make the reaction with hydrogen viable. In nature, lightning bolts provide momentary extreme conditions—temperatures reaching 30 000 °C—that can rupture the triple bond, allowing nitrogen to combine with oxygen. Without these activation mechanisms, the vast atmospheric reservoir of nitrogen would remain largely inaccessible to living organisms.
5. Reaction with Hydrogen: The Haber Process |
The most economically significant reaction of nitrogen gas is its reaction with hydrogen to produce ammonia, the foundation of synthetic fertilisers and numerous chemical intermediates:
N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g) ΔH = -92 kJ mol⁻¹
This exothermic reversible reaction proceeds with a decrease in the number of gas molecules. According to Le Chatelier's principle, the equilibrium yield of NH₃ is favoured by high pressure and low temperature. However, a low temperature makes the rate unacceptably slow. The industrial compromise uses a pressure of about 200 atm and a temperature of 450 °C with a finely divided iron catalyst doped with promoters such as K₂O and Al₂O₃. The ammonia is continuously removed by condensation, shifting the equilibrium to the right.
6. Reaction with Oxygen: Formation of NOₓ | 与氧反应:氮氧化物的形成
At extremely high temperatures, such as those found in internal combustion engines, blast furnaces, and lightning discharges, nitrogen reacts directly with oxygen to form nitrogen monoxide:
N₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2NO(g) ΔH = +180 kJ mol⁻¹
This reaction is highly endothermic and the equilibrium constant is negligible at ambient temperatures, but it becomes significant above 1500 °C. The NO produced is rapidly oxidised in air to nitrogen dioxide, NO₂, a reddish-brown, pungent, and toxic gas. NO₂ dimerises to N₂O₄ and is a key contributor to photochemical smog and acid rain. These nitrogen oxides, collectively called NOₓ, are serious atmospheric pollutants, and their formation is one of the main drawbacks of high-temperature combustion of fossil fuels.
7. Reaction with Metals: Nitride Formation |
Highly electropositive metals, particularly those of Groups 1, 2, and 13, can react with nitrogen gas upon heating to form ionic or covalent nitrides. Lithium is unique among the alkali metals in reacting readily with nitrogen even at room temperature:
6Li(s) + N₂(g) → 2Li₃N(s)
Magnesium also forms a nitride when burnt in air, which is why the product of magnesium combustion is a mixture of MgO and Mg₃N₂:
3Mg(s) + N₂(g) → Mg₃N₂(s)
₂(aq) + 2NH₃(g). This hydrolysis provides an indirect laboratory route to ammonia and demonstrates the chemical fixation of atmospheric nitrogen into a bioavailable form.
8. Laboratory Preparation of Nitrogen Gas |
A classic method for generating nitrogen gas in the laboratory relies on the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrite. Since ammonium nitrite is highly unstable and explosive when dry, it is generated in situ by gently warming a solution containing ammonium chloride and sodium nitrite:
NH₄Cl(aq) + NaNO₂(aq) → NH₄NO₂(aq) + NaCl(aq)
NH₄NO₂(aq) → N₂(g) + 2H₂O(l)
The evolved gas may contain traces of nitrogen oxides, which can be removed by passing it through a saturated solution of iron(II) sulfate. The nitrogen is collected over water because it has very low solubility. Another route is the oxidation of ammonia by a hot copper(II) oxide or by heating potassium dichromate with ammonium chloride, but the nitrite method remains the most convenient for A-Level demonstrations.
NH₄Cl(aq) + NaNO₂(aq) → NH₄NO₂(aq) + NaCl(aq)
NH₄NO₂(aq) → N₂(g) + 2H₂O(l)
9. Industrial and Commercial Uses of Nitrogen Gas |
Owing to its inertness and low cost, nitrogen gas is used extensively as a protective atmosphere. In metallurgy, it prevents oxidation during annealing and heat-treating of steels. In welding, a nitrogen shield is used for some stainless-steel applications. The electronics industry relies on nitrogen to create oxygen-free environments during the manufacture of semiconductors and flat-panel displays. In food packaging, nitrogen flushes out oxygen to prolong shelf life and prevent rancidity. Liquid nitrogen serves as a cryogenic refrigerant for storage of cells, sperm, and biological tissue, in cryosurgery to remove warts and lesions, and for rapid freezing of food. Nitrogen is also used in the pressurisation of aircraft tyres and in fire suppression systems for server rooms.
10. Environmental Role and the Nitrogen Cycle |
Nitrogen gas is the ultimate source and sink in the global nitrogen cycle. Through biological nitrogen fixation, symbiotic bacteria such as Rhizobium in legume root nodules and free-living bacteria like Azotobacter convert atmospheric N₂ into ammonia, which is subsequently oxidised by nitrifying bacteria to nitrites and then nitrates. These soluble ions are absorbed by plants and used to synthesise amino acids and proteins. Decomposers release ammonium ions back into the soil, and denitrifying bacteria complete the cycle by reducing nitrates back to N₂ gas. Human activity—mainly the industrial Haber process for fertilisers and the combustion of fossil fuels—has more than doubled the global flux of reactive nitrogen species. This surge contributes to eutrophication of water bodies, acid deposition, and the release of nitrous oxide (N₂O), a potent greenhouse gas.
