📚 Periodicity of Physical Properties in Elements |
In atomic physics and materials science, the periodic table organises elements in a way that reveals repeating patterns in their physical properties. This periodicity arises from the repeating electron configurations as atomic number increases. Understanding these trends helps predict behaviours such as conductivity, hardness, melting point, and more.
1. Atomic Radius Trends |
Atomic radius is defined as half the distance between the nuclei of two adjacent atoms in a solid or a molecule. Across a period from left to right, the atomic radius decreases because the increasing nuclear charge attracts the electron cloud more strongly, while the shielding effect of inner electrons remains nearly constant. The electrons are pulled closer to the nucleus.
Down a group, the atomic radius increases as new electron shells are added, increasing the distance between the nucleus and the outermost electrons. The screening effect of inner shells also reduces the effective nuclear attraction on the outer electrons.
2. First Ionisation Energy |
The first ionisation energy is the minimum energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of singly charged positive ions. It follows a periodic trend: generally increasing across a period and decreasing down a group.
Across a period, the ionisation energy rises because the atomic radius decreases and the effective nuclear charge increases, making the outer electrons harder to remove. However, small irregularities occur: for example, the ionisation energy of boron is lower than that of beryllium because the 2p electron in boron is at a higher energy level than the 2s electrons in beryllium, making it easier to remove. Similarly, oxygen has a lower first ionisation energy than nitrogen due to electron–electron repulsion in the doubly occupied 2p orbital.
Down a group, ionisation energy decreases because the outer electrons are farther from the nucleus and experience more shielding, so less energy is needed to remove them.
3. Electronegativity | 电负性
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract bonding electrons towards itself in a covalent bond. On the Pauling scale, fluorine is the most electronegative element. The trend parallels that of ionisation energy: electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a group.
This occurs because across a period, the increased nuclear charge pulls bonding electrons more effectively, while down a group the increased atomic radius and shielding reduce the attraction.
4. Melting and Boiling Points |
Melting and boiling points reflect the strength of the forces holding atoms, molecules, or ions together. Across a period, these temperatures vary in a characteristic way. In Period 3, for example, sodium, magnesium, and aluminium are metals with strong metallic bonding; their melting points increase from Na to Al as the number of delocalised electrons and the charge of the ion cores increase. Silicon is a giant covalent network solid with very high melting point. Phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine form simple molecular solids with weak van der Waals forces, leading to low melting and boiling points. Argon has extremely low values due to its monatomic nature.
Down a group, the melting and boiling points of metals generally decrease because the atomic radius increases and the metallic bonding weakens as the delocalised electrons are farther from the larger ion cores. For molecular solids, melting points often increase down the group due to greater polarizability and stronger London dispersion forces.
5. Density | 密度
Density depends on atomic mass, atomic radius, and the crystal structure. Across a period, the density of metals tends to rise to a maximum near the middle of the transition metals, then falls for the non-metals. In Period 3, density increases from sodium to aluminium, drops for silicon, and remains low for phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine. Transition metals like iron, copper, and tungsten have exceptionally high densities due to close-packed crystal structures and high atomic masses.
Down a group, density generally increases because the atomic mass increases more rapidly than the atomic volume. For example, the density of group 1 metals rises from lithium to caesium, though the trend is not entirely smooth due to different crystal structures.
6. Electrical Conductivity | 导电性
Electrical conductivity depends on the availability of charge carriers and their mobility. Metals are excellent conductors because they have a sea of delocalised electrons that can move freely under an electric field. Across a period, conductivity is high for metals, drops sharply for semimetals like silicon and germanium, and becomes negligible for non-metals except for graphite (a form of carbon), which conducts due to delocalised electrons between its layers.
In terms of band theory, metals have overlapping valence and conduction bands, so electrons can easily be excited. Semiconductors have a small energy gap between the valence and conduction band, and conductivity increases with temperature or doping. Insulators have a large band gap. Periodicity of conductivity is closely tied to the electronic band structure and the number of valence electrons.
7. Thermal Conductivity | 热导率
Thermal conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct heat. In metals, heat is primarily carried by free electrons, so good electrical conductors are also good thermal conductors (Wiedemann–Franz law). Across a period, thermal conductivity follows a similar trend to electrical conductivity, peaking for metals like copper and silver and dropping for non-metals.
Diamond (carbon) is an exception: it has extremely high thermal conductivity despite being an electrical insulator, because lattice vibrations (phonons) efficiently transfer heat through its strong covalent bonds. Across group 14, thermal conductivity decreases from diamond to silicon and germanium as bond strengths weaken.
