📚 Catalysis |
Catalysis is a fundamental concept in chemistry that dramatically influences reaction rates without being consumed. A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, enabling chemical transformations to occur more rapidly under milder conditions. Understanding catalysis is essential for both industrial processes and biological systems, and it forms a core topic in A-Level Chemistry examinations.
1. What is Catalysis? |
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing any permanent chemical change itself. It achieves this by providing an alternative mechanism for the reaction, which has a lower activation energy (Eₐ) compared to the uncatalysed pathway. Although the catalyst participates in the reaction, it is regenerated at the end, so it does not appear in the overall stoichiometric equation.
Importantly, a catalyst does not alter the position of equilibrium or the overall enthalpy change (ΔH) of a reaction. It only speeds up the attainment of equilibrium by accelerating both the forward and reverse reactions equally. The Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) also remains unchanged because the catalyst does not affect the thermodynamic stability of reactants or products.
2. Activation Energy and Reaction Pathway |
In any chemical reaction, molecules must overcome an energy barrier known as the activation energy (Eₐ). The catalyst works by offering a different pathway for bond breaking and bond making, which involves lower energy transition states or intermediate species. On an energy profile diagram, this is shown as a lower ‘hump’ for the catalysed reaction compared with the uncatalysed one.
ons increases, and the rate constant k rises according to the Arrhenius equation: k = A e⁻ᴱᵃ/ᴿᵀ. A lower Eₐ exponentially increases the rate constant at a given temperature.
3. Homogeneous Catalysis |
Homogeneous catalysis occurs when the catalyst and the reactants are in the same phase, most commonly in the liquid or gas phase. In such systems, the catalyst often forms an intermediate species with one of the reactants, which then reacts further to give the products and regenerate the catalyst. This cycle is repeated many times, allowing a small amount of catalyst to process a large quantity of reactants.
lowed by H₂O₂ + IO⁻ → H₂O + O₂ + I⁻. The I⁻ ion is consumed in the first step and regenerated in the second, acting as a homogeneous catalyst.
其机理分两步:H₂O₂ + I⁻ → H₂O + IO⁻,然后 H₂O₂ + IO⁻ → H₂O + O₂ + I⁻。
Another important example is the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of esters, where hydrogen ions (H⁺) catalyse the reaction by protonating the carbonyl oxygen, making it more susceptible to nucleophilic attack. Enzymes, although biological, are also a special case of homogeneous catalysts operating in aqueous environments.
4. Heterogeneous Catalysis |
Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst that is in a different phase from the reactants, typically a solid catalyst with gaseous or liquid reactants. The reaction occurs at the surface of the catalyst, so the surface area and active sites play a crucial role. This type of catalysis is heavily utilised in the chemical industry because the solid catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture.
The catalytic activity depends on the ability of reactant molecules to adsorb onto the solid surface. Adsorption can be physisorption (weak van der Waals forces) or chemisorption (strong chemical bonds). For effective catalysis, chemisorption must be strong enough to weaken internal bonds in the reactant but not so strong that the product cannot desorb and free up the active site.
5. Surface Adsorption Theory |
The mechanism of heterogeneous catalysis can be explained by the surface adsorption theory, which consists of several key stages. First, reactant molecules diffuse to the catalyst surface and undergo adsorption at specific active sites. Chemisorption often involves the formation of temporary bonds between the reactant and surface metal atoms, causing bond weakening or breaking in the reactant.
1. Diffusion → 2. Adsorption → 3. Surface Reaction → 4. Desorption → 5. Diffusion away
After the surface reaction forms product molecules, these must desorb from the surface to regenerate the active sites. The overall rate can be limited by any of these steps, and the efficiency is often enhanced by supporting the catalyst on a high-surface-area material such as alumina (Al₂O₃) or silica (SiO₂).
Catalyst poisoning is a serious issue: impurities such as sulfur or arsenic compounds bind strongly to active sites, preventing reactant adsorption. This leads to a permanent or temporary loss of catalytic activity, which must be managed in industrial processes by purifying feedstocks.
6. Catalysis in the Haber Process |
The Haber process for the synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) from nitrogen and hydrogen is a landmark in heterogeneous catalysis. The reaction N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g) has a high activation energy, so it requires a catalyst to proceed at an economically viable rate. A finely divided iron catalyst promoted with small amounts of potassium oxide (K₂O) and alumina (Al₂O₃) is used at temperatures around 450°C and pressures of 200 atm.
The iron catalyst provides surface atoms where nitrogen molecules chemisorb dissociatively, breaking the strong N≡N triple bond. Hydrogen atoms also adsorb, and stepwise hydrogenation of nitrogen atoms leads to ammonia formation. Despite the equilibrium favouring products at lower temperatures, a compromise temperature is used to maintain fast kinetics while still achieving reasonable yields.
7. Catalysis in the Contact Process |
The Contact process oxidises sulfur dioxide (SO₂) to sulfur trioxide (SO₃) in the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Vanadium(V) oxide (V₂O₅) is used as the heterogeneous catalyst. The reaction 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g) is exothermic and proceeds optimally around 450°C under slight pressure.
The mechanism involves a redox cycle of vanadium between the +5 and +4 oxidation states. SO₂ reduces V₂O₅ to V₂O₄, which is then reoxidised by O₂ back to V₂O₅. This ability to change oxidation state easily makes vanadium oxide an excellent catalyst for this oxidation reaction.
8. Catalytic Converters in Automobiles |
Automobile exhausts contain harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and unburnt hydrocarbons. A catalytic converter uses a honeycomb structure coated with a mixture of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) to convert these pollutants into less harmful substances.
reduction of NO); and complete oxidation of hydrocarbons to CO₂ and H₂O. Rhodium is particularly effective for breaking the N–O bond, while platinum and palladium excel at oxidation reactions.
A limitation is that catalytic converters must be hot to function (typically above 300°C), so vehicles emit more pollutants during the first few minutes of operation. The catalyst can also be poisoned by lead, which is why leaded petrol has been phased out worldwide.
9. Enzyme Catalysis |
Enzymes are biological catalysts that are typically globular proteins with a specific three-dimensional shape. They provide an active site where a substrate molecule binds, forming an enzyme–substrate complex. Enzyme catalysis is remarkably efficient and highly specific, often accelerating reactions by factors of millions under mild physiological conditions.
The ‘lock-and-key’ model describes the complementarity between the shape of the active site and the substrate. A more accurate ‘induced-fit’ model suggests the active site undergoes a conformational change upon substrate binding, straining bonds and lowering the activation energy. Enzyme activity is influenced by temperature, pH and inhibitor molecules.
For A-Level examination purposes, common examples include catalase, which decomposes hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, and amylase, which catalyses starch hydrolysis. Students should be able to interpret graphs of enzyme activity against temperature and pH, noting the optimum and denaturation conditions.
10. Autocatalysis and Industrial Importance |
etween manganate(VII) ions and ethanedioate (oxalate) ions in acid solution: 2MnO₄⁻(aq) + 5C₂O₄²⁻(aq) + 16H⁺(aq) → 2Mn²⁺(aq) + 10CO₂(g) + 8H₂O(l). The Mn²⁺ ions produced catalyse the reaction, so the rate initially increases as more catalyst is formed.
Autocatalysis produces an S-shaped (sigmoid) concentration–time curve rather than the usual exponential decay. At the start, the uncatalysed reaction is slow; then as Mn²⁺ builds up, the catalysed pathway dominates and the rate accelerates until reactant concentrations fall significantly.
From an industrial perspective, catalysis underpins more than 90% of chemical manufacturing processes. The development of selective and robust catalysts reduces energy consumption, minimises waste and enables synthesis of materials ranging from fertilisers to pharmaceuticals. Understanding catalysis is therefore not only an academic requirement but also a cornerstone of green chemistry and sustainable development.
