📚 States of Matter |
Understanding the states of matter is fundamental to explaining the physical behaviour of substances around us. In A-Level Chemistry, we examine how the arrangement, movement, and intermolecular forces of particles determine whether a substance exists as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. This topic also introduces ideal gas behaviour, kinetic theory, phase changes, and the interpretation of phase diagrams.
1. Introduction to the Three States |
Matter commonly exists in three physical states: solid, liquid, and gas. The state of a substance depends on the balance between the kinetic energy of particles and the strength of the attractive forces between them. At low temperatures, particles have insufficient energy to overcome these attractions and adopt a fixed, ordered arrangement. At high temperatures, particles move rapidly and independently, filling any available volume.
2. The Kinetic Particle Model |
The kinetic particle model describes how particles behave in each state. In solids, particles vibrate about fixed positions in a regular lattice. In liquids, particles can slide past one another but remain in close contact, giving a fixed volume but no fixed shape. In gases, particles move rapidly in random directions with large spaces between them and negligible forces of attraction except during collisions.
3. Solids: Structure, Bonding and Types |
Solids are classified by the nature of the particles and the bonding that holds them together. Ionic solids, such as sodium chloride, consist of oppositely charged ions in a giant lattice held by strong electrostatic forces. They are hard, brittle, and conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved. Metallic solids have a lattice of cations surrounded by delocalised electrons, which accounts for their malleability, ductility, and electrical conductivity.
Giant covalent (macromolecular) solids, including diamond and silicon dioxide, feature networks of strong covalent bonds throughout the entire structure. They are extremely hard and have very high melting points. Molecular solids, such as ice and iodine, are composed of discrete molecules held together by weak intermolecular forces (van der Waals' forces or hydrogen bonds), making them soft with low melting points.
4. Liquids: Properties and Vapour Pressure |
In a liquid, particles have enough kinetic energy to move past each other but remain held together by attractive forces. This results in a fixed volume, fluidity, and surface tension. At the surface, some particles possess sufficient energy to escape into the gas phase; this process is called evaporation. When the liquid is enclosed, a dynamic equilibrium is established between the liquid and its vapour.
The vapour pressure is the pressure exerted by the vapour in equilibrium with its liquid at a given temperature. It increases with temperature because more particles have the energy to overcome intermolecular forces. A liquid boils when its vapour pressure equals the external atmospheric pressure.
5. Gases and the Ideal Gas Law |
An ideal gas is one whose particles occupy negligible volume and have no intermolecular forces. The behaviour of an ideal gas is summarised by the ideal gas equation:
pV = nRT
ing the gas laws gives the relationship p₁V₁/T₁ = p₂V₂/T₂ for a fixed mass of gas. These equations allow calculation of molar mass and predictions of gas behaviour under changing conditions.
6. Kinetic Theory of Gases and Molecular Speeds |
The kinetic theory provides a microscopic explanation of gas pressure and temperature. Pressure arises from the collisions of gas particles with the walls of a container. The average kinetic energy of the particles is directly proportional to the absolute temperature (Eₖ ∝ T). Therefore, at a given temperature, lighter gas molecules move faster than heavier ones.
Not all particles in a sample have the same speed; they follow a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. The distribution curve shows the most probable speed, the average speed, and the root-mean-square speed. As temperature increases, the curve flattens and shifts to the right, indicating a greater proportion of particles with high kinetic energy.
7. Real Gases: Deviations from Ideality |
Real gases deviate from ideal behaviour under high pressure and low temperature. Under high pressure, particles are forced closer together, so the volume of the particles themselves is no longer negligible compared to the total volume. At low temperatures, the kinetic energy is low, and intermolecular attractive forces become significant, reducing the pressure exerted on the container.
dicates dominant attractive forces, while Z > 1 indicates that the volume of the particles dominates. Carbon dioxide and ammonia show large deviations due to strong intermolecular forces, while hydrogen and helium behave more ideally.
8. Changes of State and Energy Transfers |
State changes — melting, freezing, boiling, condensing, sublimation, and deposition — occur without any change in temperature until the process is complete. During melting, energy absorbed by the solid breaks the intermolecular bonds, causing a transition to the liquid state. The enthalpy of fusion (ΔHfus) is the energy needed to melt one mole of solid at its melting point.
Similarly, the enthalpy of vaporisation (ΔHvap) is the energy required to convert one mole of liquid into gas at the boiling point. This is always larger than ΔHfus because all remaining intermolecular forces must be completely overcome. The relationship between vapour pressure and temperature is described by the Clausius–Clapeyron equation, which explains why boiling points change with external pressure.
9. Heating and Cooling Curves |
When a solid is heated at a constant rate, the temperature rises until the melting point is reached. The temperature then remains constant while the solid melts, despite continued heating. This plateau represents the latent heat of fusion. Once all the solid has melted, the temperature of the liquid rises again until boiling begins, producing a second plateau for the latent heat of vaporisation. Eventually, the gas continues to heat up.
Cooling curves show the reverse sequence, with plateaus corresponding to condensation and freezing. The shape of the curve gives direct evidence of the energy changes associated with phase transitions and can be used to determine the purity of a substance — impurities lower the melting point and broaden the melting range.
10. Phase Diagrams: Water and Carbon Dioxide |
A phase diagram maps the state of a substance as a function of temperature and pressure. It shows the boundaries between solid, liquid, and gas — known as fusion, vaporisation, and sublimation curves. The triple point is where all three phases coexist in equilibrium. The critical point marks the end of the liquid–gas boundary; beyond it, the substance exists as a supercritical fluid.
For water, the fusion curve slopes slightly to the left because ice is less dense than water; increasing pressure favours the liquid phase. This is why ice melts under pressure, a property that makes ice skating possible. In contrast, the fusion curve for carbon dioxide slopes to the right. The triple point of CO₂ lies above atmospheric pressure (5.1 atm), so solid CO₂ (dry ice) sublimes without melting at room pressure.
11. Critical Points and Supercritical Fluids |
The critical temperature (Tc) is the temperature above which a gas cannot be liquefied by pressure alone. The corresponding pressure is the critical pressure (pc). At and beyond the critical point, the distinction between liquid and gas disappears, and the substance becomes a supercritical fluid. This fluid has the density of a liquid and the viscosity and diffusivity of a gas.
Supercritical carbon dioxide is widely used as a green solvent for decaffeinating coffee and in dry-cleaning. The unique properties arise because near the critical point, small changes in pressure or temperature cause large changes in density and solubility. Understanding the critical point also completes the interpretation of phase diagrams for real substances.
pc(H₂O) = 218 atm, Tc(H₂O) = 647 K
pc(CO₂) = 73 atm, Tc(CO₂) = 304 K
