📚 Adaptations of Rice for Wet Environments |
Rice (Oryza sativa) is a staple food for more than half the world's population and is cultivated primarily in flooded paddies. Unlike most terrestrial plants, rice thrives in soils with very low oxygen availability. This remarkable ability results from a suite of morphological, anatomical and physiological adaptations that ensure oxygen supply to submerged organs, prevent toxic ion accumulation and allow germination even under water. This article explores these adaptations in the context of the Cambridge International A Level Biology syllabus.
1. The Challenge of Waterlogged Soils |
In waterlogged soils, the diffusion of gases is about 10,000 times slower than in air. Consequently, oxygen is rapidly depleted by respiring microorganisms and plant roots. Within a few hours of flooding, the soil environment becomes hypoxic or even anoxic. Most plants cannot maintain aerobic respiration under such conditions and suffer from energy shortages, toxic accumulations of reduced metal ions and decreased nutrient absorption. Rice has evolved to cope with these stresses through a combination of structural modifications and metabolic adjustments.
2. Aerenchyma: Internal Air Channels |
One of the most striking adaptations of rice is the formation of aerenchyma - continuous gas-filled spaces in the cortex of roots, stems and leaves. These channels are produced either by cell separation (schizogeny) or by programmed cell death (lysigeny). In rice roots, lysigenous aerenchyma is predominant, creating large longitudinal air conduits that allow oxygen to diffuse from the aerial parts down to the root tips. The internal atmosphere can maintain oxygen concentrations sufficient for respiration even when the external soil is completely anoxic.
