📚 Pre-U CAIE Geography: Core Knowledge Consolidation | Pre-U CAIE
Cambridge Pre-U Geography rewards candidates who can move fluently between physical and human geography, and who can justify that movement with evidence, models and case studies. Command words such as 'explain', 'assess' and 'to what extent' are testing the quality of your reasoning, not just your recall. This revision guide consolidates the essential content of the syllabus - earth systems, fluvial and coastal processes, glacial and periglacial environments, weather and climate, population, settlement, development, resources and hazards - together with the geographical skills and fieldwork thinking that hold the whole subject together.
1. Earth Systems and Feedback Mechanisms |
The Earth is best understood as an integrated system of four interacting spheres: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere, with the cryosphere often treated as a fifth. A system is any set of interrelated components that form a working whole. Systems are classified by what crosses their boundaries. An open system exchanges both energy and matter with its surroundings; a closed system exchanges energy only; an isolated system exchanges nothing.
Almost every landform studied in Pre-U Geography sits within a cascading system, in which stores of material are linked by fluxes. The universal budget equation allows you to quantify change over time and is worth memorising for any sediment, energy or water question.
Inputs − Outputs = ΔStore (∆ = change over the study period)
Feedback loops determine whether a system is stable or self-reinforcing. Positive feedback amplifies an initial change, driving the system away from equilibrium: melting ice lowers albedo, so more solar radiation is absorbed, so warming accelerates and more ice melts. Negative feedback dampens change and restores equilibrium: increased evaporation produces more cloud, which reflects incoming short-wave radiation and cools the surface.
- Dynamic equilibrium - the system fluctuates around an average state with no long-term trend. |
- Threshold - a critical value beyond which the system abruptly reorganises. |
- Tipping point - a threshold that, once crossed, makes the change effectively irreversible. |
2. The Drainage Basin and the Hydrological Cycle |
The global hydrological cycle is a closed system: solar energy drives evaporation, gravity drives precipitation and runoff, and the total volume of water is essentially fixed. Within it, the drainage basin - the area drained by a river and its tributaries, bounded by the watershed - operates as an open system, gaining water through precipitation and losing it through evaporation, transpiration and discharge to the sea.
You should be able to name and sequence the stores and fluxes confidently. Stores include the ocean (the largest), ice caps and glaciers, groundwater, soil moisture, lakes, rivers and the atmosphere. Fluxes include interception, infiltration, percolation, throughflow, groundwater flow, baseflow, overland flow, channel flow, evaporation, transpiration, condensation and precipitation.
The storm hydrograph is the single most examined diagram in this topic. A steep rising limb, a short lag time and a high, narrow peak indicate a flashy, rapid-response catchment; a gentle rising limb, long lag time and low, broad peak indicate a slow-response catchment.
Three quantitative relationships are frequently required. Discharge is the volume of water passing a point per second; the runoff coefficient expresses how much rainfall becomes river flow; and the unit hydrograph assumes a constant relationship between rainfall amount and discharge for a given storm duration.
Q = A × V | Runoff coefficient (%) = (Runoff ÷ Precipitation) × 100
3. Fluvial Processes and Landforms |
River processes operate through erosion, transport and deposition, and the balance between them changes downstream. Erosion occurs by hydraulic action (the force of water compressing air in cracks), abrasion (material scouring the bed and banks), attrition (particles colliding and becoming smaller and rounder) and solution (chemical removal of soluble rock such as chalk or limestone). Transport occurs as traction, saltation, suspension and solution, with suspended load dominant in the lower course.
The long profile of a river is concave, steep at the source and gentle near the mouth, and tends towards a graded profile in which the river has just enough energy to transport its load. Base level is the lowest point to which a river can erode. If base level falls, the river is rejuvenated: it cuts downwards, producing knick points, incised meanders and river terraces, while renewed lateral erosion removes earlier floodplains.
- Upper course: vertical erosion dominates. Waterfalls, potholes, gorges, V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs.
- Middle course: lateral erosion and deposition balance. Meanders, slip-off slopes, river cliffs, point bars. |
- Lower course: deposition dominates. Floodplains, levees, oxbow lakes, deltas, distributaries. |
The Hjulström curve summarises the relationship between stream velocity and particle size, showing that clay particles require unusually high velocities to entrain (cohesion) but very low velocities to remain in transport, whereas sand is the most easily entrained size fraction.
4. Coastal Systems and Landforms |
Coasts are open systems best studied as sediment cells (littoral cells) - self-contained stretches of coastline in which sediment is recycled with limited transfer across cell boundaries. Inputs come from rivers, cliff erosion and offshore sources; transfers include longshore drift and tidal currents; outputs include offshore loss into deep water and loss to dune fields or estuaries.
Wave type determines the dominant process. Constructive waves have a low frequency, long wavelength, low height and strong swash with weak backwash, so they build beaches. Destructive waves are frequent, short, tall and have little swash but a powerful backwash, so they remove sediment. Longshore drift transports material obliquely up the beach in the swash direction and straight back down the beach with the backwash, producing a zig-zag movement.
- Erosional: headlands and bays, cliffs and wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks, stumps, blowholes. |
- Depositional: beaches, spits, bars, tombolos, sand dunes, salt marshes, mudflats. |
Sea level change links coastal geography to climate change. Eustatic change is a global change in ocean volume (glacio-eustatic during glacial-interglacial cycles), whereas isostatic change is local land-level movement caused by loading and unloading of ice or sediment. Their interaction produces emergent coastlines (raised beaches, abandoned cliffs) and submergent coastlines (rias, fjords, drowned valleys).
5. Glacial and Periglacial Systems |
A glacier is a mass of ice that deforms and moves under its own weight, and its behaviour is governed by mass balance. Accumulation occurs through snowfall, avalanching and refreezing of meltwater; ablation occurs through melting, sublimation and calving. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) separates the accumulation zone from the ablation zone, and a positive net balance causes the glacier to advance, whereas a negative balance causes retreat.
Net mass balance = Accumulation − Ablation
Glacial erosion operates by abrasion (rock fragments grinding the bed) and plucking or quarrying (meltwater refreezes around blocks and tears them away). Erosion is most effective where the ice is thick, fast-moving and underlain by well-jointed rock. Together with freeze-thaw weathering, this produces the classic upland assemblage: cirques, arêtes, pyramidal peaks, U-shaped valleys, hanging valleys, truncated spurs, ribbon lakes and roche moutonnées.
| Drumlin | 鼓丘 | Deposition under moving ice; blunt end points up-ice | 冰下沉积,钝端指示上游方向 |
| Terminal moraine | 终碛 | Deposition at the maximum extent of an advance | 冰川前进最大范围处的堆积 |
| Esker | 蛇形丘 | Sand and gravel deposited by subglacial meltwater streams | 冰下融水河道沉积的砂砾脊 |
| Kame | 冰砾阜 | Sorted material deposited at the ice margin | 冰缘处堆积的分选物质 |
| Outwash plain | 冰水冲积平原 | Fluvioglacial deposition by meltwater beyond the snout | 冰舌外侧融水形成的冰水沉积 |
Periglacial environments are those where freeze-thaw processes dominate but ice sheets are absent. Permafrost is ground that remains below 0 °C for two or more consecutive years; the overlying active layer thaws each summer. Characteristic features include patterned ground (stone polygons), pingos, solifluction lobes, blockfields and thermokarst, and their stability is directly threatened by Arctic warming.
6. Weather, Climate and Climate Change |
Weather is the short-term state of the atmosphere; climate is the long-term average and variability of weather, conventionally over 30 years. The global energy budget explains the latitudinal temperature gradient: insolation is most intense near the equator where the sun's rays are near-vertical, and most diffuse at the poles where they strike at a low angle and pass through a greater depth of atmosphere.
Energy is redistributed by atmospheric and oceanic circulation. Three cells operate in each hemisphere: the Hadley cell (tropical convection, rising air at the ITCZ, descending air at about 30° producing subtropical deserts), the Ferrel cell (mid-latitude westerlies and the polar front) and the polar cell. The Coriolis force deflects moving air to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere, and it also powers the jet streams.
Climate change is examined as the difference between natural and anthropogenic forcing. Natural drivers include Milankovitch cycles (eccentricity about 100,000 years, obliquity about 41,000 years, precession about 23,000 years), volcanic activity (sulphate aerosols produce short-term cooling) and variations in solar output. Anthropogenic drivers are primarily greenhouse gas emissions, land-use change and aerosol release.
