📚 Pre-U Cambridge Business: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | Pre-U Cambridge
Pre-U Cambridge Business exams require more than just memorising business theories. You must demonstrate the ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar contexts, analyse implications, and construct well-supported evaluative arguments. Understanding the marking criteria is essential to achieving top grades, as examiners reward depth, balance, and precision. This guide unpacks the assessment objectives, command words, structure, and evaluation techniques you need to master Pre-U Business questions.
1. Why Exam Technique Decides Your Grade |
In Pre-U Business, the same body of knowledge can earn very different marks depending on how it is presented. Examiners do not mark you on how much you know; they mark you against assessment objectives that are published in the syllabus. A candidate who writes three tight, context-linked analytical paragraphs will usually outscore a candidate who writes six paragraphs of generic theory. Technique is therefore not a cosmetic layer added at the end of revision - it is the mechanism that converts knowledge into marks.
Strong answers tend to share three features: they are narrow rather than broad, they use the specific evidence given in the question or case study, and they reach a defensible judgement. Weak answers tend to be broad rather than narrow, use textbook examples that ignore the context, and stop at description without ever evaluating. Reading examiner reports for Pre-U Business repeatedly reveals the same comment: candidates described what happened instead of explaining why it happened and whether it mattered.
2. Paper-by-Paper Structure |
Pre-U Business consists of three components: Paper 1 (Multiple Choice and Short Answers), Paper 2 (Data Response), and Paper 3 (Case Study). Each paper tests different skills, but all require application, analysis, and evaluation. Paper 1 has compulsory short-answer questions and one essay; Paper 2 presents real-world data for analysis; Paper 3 demands deep engagement with a pre-released case study. Knowing the format helps you allocate revision time effectively.
The practical implication is that you should not revise all three papers in the same way. Paper 1 rewards speed and precision: definitions must be exact, calculations must be correct, and the essay must still contain evaluation even though it is shorter. Paper 2 rewards interpretation: you must read a table, graph or extract, identify the trend, and connect it to a business concept. Paper 3 rewards depth of preparation: because the case study is released in advance, examiners expect you to know the business well enough to discuss strategy, finance, marketing and operations in a joined-up way.
- Paper 2 | 试卷二: data interpretation + application to a real-world context 数据解读 + 应用于真实情境
- Paper 3 | 试卷三: extended analysis and evaluation of a pre-released case 对预发布案例的延伸分析与评估
3. Assessment Objectives in Detail |
Pre-U Business uses four assessment objectives: AO1 Knowledge and understanding (30%), AO2 Application (30%), AO3 Analysis (20%), and AO4 Evaluation (20%). AO1 rewards accurate recall of business concepts, theories, and terminology. AO2 requires you to apply this knowledge to the specific context presented in the question or case study. AO3 measures how well you develop logical chains of reasoning about causes and consequences. AO4 rewards balanced judgement supported by evidence.
| Assessment Objective | Weighting | What Examiners Reward |
| AO1 Knowledge and understanding 知识与理解 | 30% | Accurate concepts, theories and precise terminology 概念、理论与术语准确 |
| AO2 Application 应用 | 30% | Use of the specific context, data and stakeholders 使用具体情境、数据与利益相关者 |
The weighting matters strategically. Because AO2 carries the same weight as AO1, an answer that defines a concept perfectly but never mentions the business in front of you cannot access half the marks. Conversely, because AO3 and AO4 together equal 40%, roughly two marks in every five at the top end depend on reasoning and judgement rather than recall.
4. Command Words Decoded |
Command words tell you which assessment objectives are available in a question and therefore how much time the question deserves. Define and State are pure AO1 - one accurate sentence is enough. Describe adds detail but still stops short of reasoning. Explain and Analyse require AO3: you must show a mechanism, not just a statement. Discuss, Evaluate, Assess and To what extent are AO4 command words: a one-sided answer is structurally incapable of reaching the top band.
| Command Word | Main AO | What It Requires |
| Explain 解释 | AO1 + AO3 | A mechanism: because... therefore... |
| Analyse 分析 | AO2 + AO3 | Break down causes and consequences 拆解原因与后果 |
| Discuss 讨论 | AO3 + AO4 | Two sides plus a conclusion 两面加结论 |
| To what extent 在多大程度上 | AO4 | A graded judgement, not yes or no 分程度的判断,而非是非题 |
A common error is treating To what extent as a request for two lists of advantages and disadvantages. It is not. The question asks for a degree of agreement with a claim, so your conclusion should contain a qualifier: largely true, but only if certain conditions hold. Naming those conditions is what earns the highest AO4 marks.
5. The Anatomy of a High-Scoring Answer |
Every extended Pre-U Business answer can be built from the same five-step skeleton. This structure works for a six-mark explain question and for a twenty-mark evaluative essay; only the number of repetitions changes. The point is that each step maps onto an assessment objective, so nothing is wasted and nothing is missing.
Point → Context Evidence → Analysis Chain → Counter-argument → Weighted Judgement
ure, a stakeholder or a fact from the case. The third (Analysis Chain) earns AO3 by extending the consequence over at least two links, for example: lower price → higher volume → but thinner margin → lower retained profit. The fourth and fifth elements earn AO4 by acknowledging the opposite case and then weighing it.
6. Application (AO2): Anchoring Answers in the Context | 应用(AO2):把答案锚定在情境中
Application is the objective most often lost by otherwise knowledgeable candidates. The test is simple: cover the name of the business in your answer. If the sentence still reads as true for any company in any country, it is theory, not application. Application means using the specific product, market, stakeholder, figure or constraint that the question supplies.
Three techniques raise AO2 quickly. First, use quantities: not costs rose but unit costs rose from 12 to 15 dollars per unit. Second, name stakeholders: not employees were affected but the 400 warehouse staff facing redundancy. Third, use the constraint the case gives you: limited cash, a family ownership structure, an overseas competitor entering the market. These details force your analysis in a specific direction rather than a generic one.
Analysis is the difference between a list and an argument. A list says: lower prices increase demand, increase sales revenue, and may reduce profit. An analysis says: if the firm cuts price by 10 per cent while variable cost per unit stays at 8 dollars, contribution per unit falls from 4 to 2 dollars, so the firm must more than double its sales volume merely to hold total contribution constant - and the case tells us it has no spare capacity to do so. The second version shows a mechanism and reaches a conclusion the reader could not have predicted from the first sentence.
Useful analytical connectors include: therefore, which means that, as a result, this in turn leads to, however this assumes that, in the short run, in the long run. Each connector should carry a genuine logical step. A common weakness is the chain that leaps from cause to final consequence without the intermediate links, which examiners treat as assertion rather than analysis.
Evaluation answers the question so what. It requires three ingredients: a counter-argument, a criterion for weighing the two sides, and a final judgement. The criterion is what most candidates omit. Typical criteria include time horizon (short run versus long run), scale of financial impact, reversibility of the decision, fit with the firm's objectives, and the reliability of the evidence available.
Notice how the judgement is graded rather than binary. Instead of writing the firm should relocate, write relocation is likely to be justified only if the projected labour cost saving exceeds 2 million dollars a year, which the case suggests is uncertain because demand in the new market is unproven. This formulation names the condition, quantifies it where possible, and links back to context - three AO4 behaviours at once.
9. Theories, Models and Terminology |
Pre-U Business rewards accurate use of concepts, but only when they are used as tools rather than decoration. Ansoff's matrix helps you classify a growth option as diversification rather than market penetration. Break-even and contribution analysis helps you quantify the risk of a price change. Stakeholder mapping helps you explain why a decision may be resisted even when it is financially sound. The Breakeven formula is worth memorising precisely.
Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ (Price − Variable cost per unit)
Terminology should be used with precision: revenue is not profit, cash flow is not profit, and market share is not market growth. Examiners are trained to spot and penalise loose usage. Where a model is named, it should be applied to the case in the same sentence, for example: positioning the launch as a market development under Ansoff is risky here because the brand has no recognition outside its home region.
10. Data Response and Case Study Technique |
Paper 2 and Paper 3 both put evidence in front of you, and the marks depend on how you read it. In a data response, always start by identifying the direction, the magnitude and the timing of the change. A rise of 0.5 per cent is not the same finding as a rise of 50 per cent, and a change that starts in year three often has a different cause from one present from year one.
For Paper 3, the pre-released case rewards preparation that goes beyond reading. Build a one-page profile of the business: objectives, financial position, competitive position, key stakeholders, and three strategic issues. Then pre-write skeleton evaluative paragraphs for the two or three most likely questions. Because the case is known in advance, the marginal return on this preparation is unusually high compared with general revision.
11. Common Mark Losses and How to Fix Them | 常见失分点与修正方法
Certain errors appear again and again in Pre-U Business scripts: answers that define terms without applying them, one-sided evaluations, analysis without a chain, conclusions that merely restate the introduction, and calculations presented without interpretation. Each has a straightforward fix that can be practised deliberately rather than discovered on exam day.
- Definition-only answers | 只下定义: add a sentence beginning In this case...
- One-sided evaluation | 单方面评估: add however plus a criterion 补一个 however 加一个标准
- Assertion without reasoning | 无推理的断言: insert at least two therefore or which means that links 至少插入两个 therefore 或 which means that
- Calculator without commentary | 只算不评: after every figure, state what it implies for the decision 每个数字后说明它对决策意味着什么
- Repetitive conclusion | 重复式结论: end with a condition, not a summary 以条件收尾,而非总结
Time management compounds these problems. If you spend too long on early short-answer questions, the extended evaluation at the end - where the marks are concentrated - is written under pressure and loses its structure first. Allocate minutes in proportion to marks, and keep the last few minutes of each paper for checking figures and units.
12. Revision Plan and Exam-Day Strategy |
An effective Pre-U Business revision plan splits practice into three layers: knowledge audits, timed technique drills, and full past-paper simulations. Knowledge audits use a syllabus checklist to find gaps. Technique drills take a single past question and rewrite it three times with different structures. Simulations build stamina and force genuine time allocation decisions.
On exam day, read all questions before writing and mark the command word in each one. Answer the question that was asked, not the one you prepared. Budget roughly one minute per mark for extended answers
