1. Understanding the CCEA Philosophy Assessment | 理解 CCEA 哲学考试要求
The Pre-U Philosophy assessment rewards depth over breadth. Each essay must demonstrate a clear grasp of philosophical problems, sustained argumentation, and critical engagement with standard positions. Examiners look for a well-defined thesis, logical progression, and evaluative commentary rather than descriptive summaries of what philosophers have said.
Typically, you will choose from a list of questions covering different areas of the syllabus. A successful answer focuses tightly on the exact wording of the question, avoiding tangential material. Remember that the mark scheme prioritises analysis and evaluation (AO2) almost as much as knowledge and understanding (AO1).
Before diving into drafting, always spend five minutes unpacking the question. Identify the key command term — 'critically assess', 'to what extent', 'evaluate', 'do you agree' — as this will determine the balance between exposition and evaluation in your essay.
2. Deconstructing the Essay Question |
Start by turning the prompt into a clear philosophical problem. For instance, if the question is 'Is knowledge justified true belief?', you need to recognise that this invites a discussion of the traditional tripartite definition, Gettier problems, and possible modifications. Underline the key concepts and ensure your essay revolves around them.
Create a quick mind map of the relevant arguments, counterarguments, and philosophers. Do not simply list everything you know; select only those points that directly address the specific question. A common pitfall is including impressive but irrelevant material that dilutes focus.
Always define challenging terms in your introduction. For example, if writing on moral realism, briefly clarify what 'mind-independent moral facts' means before launching into arguments. This shows conceptual control and sets a scholarly tone.
3. Introduction: Crafting a Strong Opening |
Your introduction should be no more than four sentences but must accomplish three goals: state your direct answer to the question (thesis), outline the structure of your argument, and hint at the evaluative stance you will adopt. Avoid grand historical narratives like 'Since the time of Plato...' — start right at the philosophical heart of the matter.
Example opening for a question on utilitarianism: 'In this essay I will argue that act utilitarianism fails to provide a satisfactory account of justice, and that a rule-utilitarian approach offers a more defensible framework, though not without its own difficulties. I will first examine the standard objections concerning rights and scapegoating, before evaluating the rule-utilitarian response and its residual weaknesses.'
Notice how this introduction directly answers, maps the structure, and signals an evaluative conclusion ('residual weaknesses'). This immediately tells the examiner that you are in control of the material.
4. Main Body: Structuring Arguments |
Organise the main body into 3–4 clearly signposted paragraphs. Each paragraph should open with a statement of the argumentative point being made, followed by explanation, supporting examples, and a mini-evaluation that links back to your overall thesis. Avoid the 'one philosopher per paragraph' trap — instead, thematic paragraphs allow you to demonstrate comparative and critical skills.
A recommended sequence: first develop your strongest supporting arguments for your thesis; then address the most powerful challenge and offer your rebuttal; finally, deepen the discussion by considering a more subtle objection or a hybrid position that refines your original stance.
Use linking phrases such as 'This leads to the further question...', 'A more fundamental objection, however, is...', or 'Building on this insight, we can see that...' to ensure logical flow. Each paragraph must earn its place by advancing the overall argument; if a point does not clearly serve your thesis, remove it.
5. Counterarguments and Rebuttals |
Strong essays do not merely list objections; they engage with them seriously and show why, despite the challenge, your thesis remains the most convincing. Always present the counterargument in its strongest form before criticising it — this demonstrates intellectual honesty and sophisticated handling of the material.
For example, if defending moral realism against Mackie's argument from queerness, do not dismiss it as 'obviously wrong'. Instead, explain precisely what Mackie means by 'queer' properties, why he thinks they would be epistemically inaccessible, and then offer a careful response, perhaps drawing on naturalistic reductions or non-reductive moral epistemology.
A good rebuttal typically does one of three things: shows that the objection mischaracterises your position, demonstrates that the objection creates a problem for all competing theories (not just yours), or concedes a minor point but explains why it does not undermine the core thesis. Never be afraid to make a limited concession; it adds nuance and credibility.
6. Using Philosophical Examples and Quotes |
Specific, well-chosen examples ground your abstract reasoning. Use thought experiments like the trolley problem, the brain in a vat, or Nozick's experience machine, but always link them explicitly to the argument. Do not simply describe a thought experiment; explain what it is supposed to show and whether it succeeds.
Quotations should be brief and integrated into your own prose. For instance, instead of writing 'Descartes says, "I think, therefore I am," which is very famous,' write 'Descartes' cogito — "I think, therefore I am" — serves as the foundational certainty upon which he attempts to rebuild knowledge.' The quotation now works for your argument, not just as decoration.
Paraphrasing core ideas is equally important. When referring to the principle of utility, you might say: 'Mill's harm principle asserts that the only justification for limiting individual liberty is to prevent harm to others.' This saves time and proves you have understood the concept beyond rote memorisation.
7. Evaluation and Critical Analysis |
Evaluation is woven throughout a top-grade essay, not confined to a single paragraph near the end. After presenting each main argument or counterargument, add one or two sentences that weigh its implications. Use phrases like 'The strength of this position lies in...', 'However, this move is vulnerable because...', or 'A deeper worry is that...'.
Your evaluative criteria must go beyond personal preference. Appeal to common philosophical standards such as coherence, explanatory power, simplicity (Ockham's razor), compatibility with empirical evidence, avoidance of counterintuitive consequences, or internal consistency. Explicitly naming these criteria impresses examiners.
Compare and contrast theories within your evaluation. For instance, when discussing consequentialism, show how it gains simplicity and intuitive appeal but loses deontological protections of rights. Use a table to summarise such trade-offs concisely in your revision, though in an actual essay a brief textual comparison is usually sufficient.
| Approach | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Act Utilitarianism | Simple; maximises welfare | Violates individual rights |
| Kantian Deontology | Respects persons | Rigid; conflicting duties |
Table: Quick comparison of ethical theories
8. Conclusion: Summarising and Answering the Question |
A strong conclusion directly answers the question in a clear, unambiguous statement. It then briefly summarises the key moves that brought you to this answer, acknowledges the most significant challenge you encountered, and ends with a forward-looking thought — perhaps a wider implication or a remaining puzzle.
Avoid introducing new arguments or examples in the conclusion. The final paragraph is for synthesis, not expansion. A typical structure: 'In conclusion, I have argued that... The central difficulty facing this view remains... Nevertheless, when compared with the alternatives, this position offers the best balance of... because... Further work might explore...'
If your essay has reached a balanced but decisive verdict, state it proudly. Phrases like 'while a complete resolution is elusive, the weight of evidence favours...' or 'on balance, the arguments support...' show mature judgement without claiming false certainty.
9. Time Management and Planning |
In the Pre-U examination, you will typically write two essays in two hours. Allocate roughly 10 minutes for planning, 45 minutes for writing, and 5 minutes for reviewing each essay. This disciplined division ensures you never run out of time or submit an essay without a conclusion.
During planning, write a skeleton structure on the question paper: thesis, 3–4 main points with keywords for arguments and objections, and a concluding statement. Use abbreviations (e.g. 'AU' for act utilitarianism, 'KR' for Kantian deontology) to save seconds. This blueprint will keep you on track when adrenaline pushes you toward rambling.
If you find yourself spending too long on one paragraph, cut your losses and move on. It is better to have a slightly underdeveloped point and a complete, balanced essay than a brilliantly argued first half and nothing else. Practise timed essays regularly to internalise pacing.
10. Model Essay: Epistemology (Knowledge and Belief) |
Question: 'Gettier cases show that knowledge is not justified true belief.' Do you agree?
In this essay I will argue that while Gettier cases decisively refute the sufficiency of the JTB (justified true belief) analysis, they do not warrant the abandonment of a broadly JTB-based approach. I will first outline the JTB account and Gettier's challenge, then examine two influential post-Gettier responses — Nozick's tracking theory and virtue epistemology — and finally defend a qualified virtue-theoretic account as the most promising resolution.
The traditional tripartite definition states that S knows that p if and only if (i) p is true, (ii) S believes that p, and (iii) S is justified in believing that p. In his 1963 paper, Gettier presented counterexamples where a subject meets all three conditions yet intuitively lacks knowledge. In one standard case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford (justification) and deduces the true disjunction 'Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona', where unknown to Smith, Jones has sold his Ford but Brown coincidentally is in Barcelona. Here Smith's justified true belief seems to be true only by luck, undermining the sufficiency claim.
Gettier cases force philosophers either to strengthen the justification condition (e.g., infallibilism) or to add a fourth condition to exclude luck. Nozick's tracking theory attempts the latter by requiring that the belief 'tracks' the truth across modal space: S knows that p if (1) p is true, (2) S believes p, and (3) if p were false, S would not believe p, and (4) if p were true under slightly different circumstances, S would still believe p. The strength of this approach is that it handles standard Gettier cases elegantly: in the Ford/Barcelona case, if the disjunction were false, Smith would still believe it, so condition (3) fails, correctly denying knowledge.
However, Nozick's theory faces serious objections. Notably, it forces the rejection of the closure principle — that if S knows p and competently deduces q from p, then S knows q. This result is highly counterintuitive. If I know that I have hands, and I deduce that I am not a brain in a vat, Nozick must deny that I know the latter. This cost seems too high. Moreover, the theory has difficulties with inductive knowledge and necessary truths, which make the tracking conditions vacuous.
A more attractive post-Gettier development is virtue epistemology. According to the basic formulation, S knows that p if and only if S's true belief is creditable to her intellectual virtues — her cognitive abilities, careful inquiry, and intellectual character. In a Gettier case, the truth of the belief is not primarily due to the agent's competence but to an environmental coincidence; thus knowledge is absent. This approach preserves the spirit of JTB while explaining why lucky true beliefs fall short. Linda Zagzebski's work shows particularly how the virtue account can diagnose a wide range of Gettier-style examples by locating the 'gap' between the exercise of virtue and the truth of the belief.
Nevertheless, virtue epistemology also faces challenges: it must give a non-circular account of intellectual virtue and handle cases where a belief is produced by reliable sub-personal mechanisms (like perception) that do not obviously count as 'virtues' in the character sense. Proponents respond by expanding the notion of virtue to include reliable faculties, but this may dilute the original appeal. A further worry is the 'credit' problem: we sometimes attribute knowledge even when the truth of a belief is mostly due to external help, as in testimonial knowledge.
In conclusion, I have argued that Gettier cases successfully undermine the claim that JTB is sufficient for knowledge, but that the core insight of JTB — that knowledge requires justified, non-accidentally true belief — can be salvaged. Virtue epistemology offers the best available synthesis by grounding knowledge in the cognitive agent's own intellectual excellences. While it faces residual difficulties with testimonial knowledge and the definition of virtue, these are more tractable than the devastating counterintuitive consequences facing Nozick's tracking theory. The project of defining knowledge thus continues, but we have good reason to pursue it within a virtue-theoretic framework. On balance, therefore, I agree that Gettier shows JTB is insufficient, but not that it is fundamentally misguided.
11. Model Essay: Ethics (Utilitarianism vs Deontology) |
Question: 'Act utilitarianism is a more satisfactory ethical theory than Kantian deontology.' Critically assess this claim.
In this essay I will challenge the claim that act utilitarianism is more satisfactory than Kantian deontology. While act utilitarianism offers a clear decision procedure and an impartial concern for welfare, I will argue that it fails to respect the separateness of persons and generates counterintuitive prescriptions in cases of injustice. Kantian deontology, despite its difficulties with conflicting duties and rigidity, provides a stronger grounding for human dignity and rights. I will begin by outlining the attractions of act utilitarianism, then develop two central deontological objections — the justice and integrity objections — before evaluating a rule-utilitarian reply and concluding that a broadly Kantian framework remains normatively superior.
Act utilitarianism (AU) states that an action is right if and only if it produces at least as much overall well-being as any alternative action. Its attraction lies in simplicity, impartiality, and direct alignment with our moral intuition that consequences matter. AU avoids the seemingly arbitrary rules of deontology and offers a flexible, situation-sensitive guide. For example, in a medical triage scenario, AU provides a principled reason for allocating scarce resources to those who can benefit most, thereby maximising lives saved.
Despite these strengths, Bernard Williams' justice objection exposes a deep flaw. Because AU aggregates welfare impersonally, it can morally require, or at least permit, punishing an innocent person if doing so would prevent greater suffering. A classic example involves a sheriff framing an innocent person to prevent a riot that would kill many. Williams argues that such an action violates the 'separateness of persons' — treating individuals as mere containers of value to be traded off against one another. This is not an incidental weakness; it strikes at the core of justice.
The second major objection is Williams' integrity challenge. AU demands that agents abandon their deep projects, commitments, and personal relationships whenever the impersonal calculus dictates. If a father must choose between saving his own child and saving two strangers, AU would require saving the two, thereby alienating the agent from the very ground of his moral identity. Williams contends that a moral theory that treats such fundamental attachments as mere preferences to be weighed alongside others fails to make sense of our lived moral experience.
Kantian deontology, by contrast, respects individuals as ends in themselves, never merely as means. The categorical imperative's second formulation makes this explicit: 'Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.' This principle directly prohibits framing the innocent, using people without their consent, and sacrificing individuals for aggregate gain. It also provides a foundation for a non-consequentialist theory of rights that protects individuals even when violating their rights would produce better overall outcomes.
However, Kantianism is not without problems. A persistent difficulty is the problem of conflicting duties. If I must lie to protect an innocent life, Kant's absolutist prohibition on lying seems to demand that I tell the truth to the murderer at the door. Interpreters such as Christine Korsgaard have attempted to resolve this by distinguishing between the form of the maxim and the particular action, but many remain unconvinced. Additionally, Kant's emphasis on rationality and autonomy raises questions about our duties to non-rational beings, such as animals and severely cognitively disabled persons.
Defenders of utilitarianism might retreat to rule utilitarianism (RU), which evaluates rules rather than individual acts. A rule against punishing the innocent, if internalised, would arguably maximise utility in the long run. However, this move is unstable: if we are committed to maximising utility, we should break the rule whenever doing so clearly produces more utility. Rule utilitarianism either collapses back into act utilitarianism or becomes inconsistent with its own foundation. Furthermore, it fails to ground the kind of inviolable protection that deontology promises.
