📚 Cloning | 克隆
Cloning is the process of producing genetically identical individuals. In GCSE Edexcel Biology, you need to understand how clones occur naturally in plants and animals, and how humans can artificially create clones for research, agriculture, and medicine. This article covers every key point, from simple cuttings to the famous Dolly the sheep.
1. What is Cloning? |
Cloning produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent organism. This means their DNA is exactly the same. Clones can arise naturally or be made artificially. In asexual reproduction, a single parent creates offspring without the fusion of gametes, so all offspring are clones of the parent. In sexual reproduction, offspring are genetically different from each other and from the parents.
2. Natural Cloning in Plants |
Many plants naturally clone themselves using asexual reproduction. Bulbs, runners, rhizomes, and tubers are all structures that allow a plant to produce genetically identical offspring. For example, strawberry plants send out horizontal stems called runners. When a runner touches the soil, it grows roots and a new plant forms. This new plant is a clone of the parent. Similarly, potato tubers have buds (eyes) that grow into new potato plants, all identical to the original plant.
3. Artificial Cloning in Plants: Cuttings |
Gardeners and farmers make plant clones by taking cuttings. A piece of stem with a few leaves is cut from a healthy parent plant. The cut end is often dipped in rooting powder containing plant hormones (auxins) to encourage root growth. The cutting is then planted in compost and kept in a warm, moist environment. Roots develop, and a new genetically identical plant grows quickly. This method is cheap, quick, and guarantees the new plant has the same desirable characteristics as the parent.
4. Artificial Cloning in Plants: Tissue Culture |
Tissue culture (micropropagation) makes thousands of clones from a tiny piece of plant tissue. Small groups of cells from the parent plant are scraped off and placed onto a sterile nutrient agar medium containing plant hormones. The cells divide and form a mass of identical cells called a callus. By adjusting the hormone balance, the callus is encouraged to develop into tiny plantlets. These plantlets are then transferred to soil. Tissue culture produces large numbers of disease‑free clones very quickly, which is ideal for conserving rare plants or multiplying crops with special traits.
5. Natural Cloning in Animals: Identical Twins |
In animals, natural clones are rare but do occur. Identical twins are natural clones. After a sperm fertilises an egg, the zygote divides by mitosis. Occasionally, the early embryo splits into two separate groups of cells. Each group develops into a separate foetus. Since both groups originated from the same zygote, their DNA is identical. They grow into genetically identical individuals – clones.
6. Artificial Cloning in Animals: Embryo Transplants |
Farmers can produce many clones from a single embryo using embryo splitting and transplantation. A cow with desirable traits (high milk yield) is given hormone treatment so she produces many eggs. These eggs are fertilised using sperm from a bull with good traits, producing several embryos. At the early embryo stage, when the cells are still unspecialised (stem cells), the embryo is split into several smaller clumps. Each clump is then implanted into the uterus of a surrogate mother cow. All the calves born will be clones of each other, but not clones of either parent — they share the same mixed DNA from the same sexual cross.
7. Artificial Cloning in Animals: Adult Cell Cloning (SCNT) |
The most advanced animal cloning technique uses a body cell from an adult. This is called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). The first successful mammal cloned this way was Dolly the sheep in 1996. In SCNT, the nucleus is removed from an unfertilised egg cell (enucleation). A nucleus from an adult body cell (e.g. a skin cell) is inserted into this empty egg. An electric shock stimulates the egg to begin dividing as if it were a normal zygote. The developing embryo is then placed into a surrogate mother. The offspring is a clone of the animal that donated the nucleus.
8. The Process of Adult Cell Cloning |
The Edexcel specification expects you to be able to describe the stages of adult cell cloning. Here is the classic SCNT procedure used for Dolly:
- Step 1: Remove a diploid nucleus from a body cell of the animal you want to clone.
- Step 2: Take an unfertilised egg cell from a donor of the same species, and remove its haploid nucleus. This makes an enucleated egg.
- Step 3: Insert the diploid nucleus into the enucleated egg cell.
- Step 4: Give the egg an electric shock to stimulate it to start dividing by mitosis, just like a fertilised egg.
- Step 5: Allow the embryo to develop into a ball of cells in a laboratory culture.
- Step 6: Implant the embryo into the uterus of a surrogate mother.
- Step 7: The surrogate gives birth to a clone of the original donor animal.
This method is inefficient — many attempts are needed before a successful live clone is born. Dolly was the only success out of 277 attempts.
9. Advantages of Cloning |
Cloning brings several benefits, especially in agriculture and medicine. Farmers can produce whole herds of animals with high yields of milk or meat. Rare or endangered species can be cloned to increase population numbers quickly. In medicine, cloned animals can be engineered to produce human proteins in their milk (a process called pharming). Cloning also helps scientists study genetic diseases and develop new therapies without needing large numbers of animal experiments. In plants, cloning allows growers to quickly multiply disease‑resistant strains and preserve unique varieties.
10. Disadvantages and Ethical Issues |
Despite its potential, cloning raises many concerns. The process is highly inefficient, with many cloned embryos failing to develop or dying shortly after birth. Cloned animals often suffer from health problems, such as premature ageing and organ defects. Dolly was euthanised at the age of six due to progressive lung disease and arthritis. Cloning reduces genetic variation, making populations vulnerable to diseases and environmental changes. There are also ethical objections: some people believe it is wrong to create life artificially or to use animals as mere tools. Human reproductive cloning is illegal in almost all countries, though therapeutic cloning using embryos to harvest stem cells remains a debated topic.
11. Cloning vs Genetic Engineering |
A common exam mistake is confusing cloning with genetic engineering. Cloning creates genetically identical copies of an organism—no new DNA is introduced. Genetic engineering, on the other hand, involves altering the organism's DNA by inserting genes from another species. For example, a cloned sheep is a copy of another sheep; a genetically engineered sheep may carry a human gene to produce a medicine in its milk. Edexcel questions may ask you to evaluate the differences, so be clear: cloning deals with whole organisms and identical DNA, while genetic engineering modifies the genetic code.
12. Exam Tips for Cloning |
In your Edexcel GCSE Biology exam, cloning questions often appear as short structured answers or as longer 6‑mark extended response tasks. Make sure you can: define clone, describe plant cloning methods (cuttings and tissue culture), outline animal cloning methods (embryo splitting and adult cell cloning), and give advantages and disadvantages. Remember the steps of SCNT in the correct order. Use key terms like “genetically identical”, “nucleus removed”, “enucleated egg”, “electric shock”, and “surrogate mother”. When comparing cloning and genetic engineering, highlight that clones have identical DNA while genetic engineering introduces new genes. Practise linking cloning to real‑world examples such as Dolly the sheep or tissue culture used to save endangered orchids.
