1. Mass and Weight |
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. It is a scalar quantity, meaning it has magnitude only, and is measured in kilograms (kg). An object's mass remains the same regardless of its location – whether on Earth, on the Moon or floating in space.
Weight, on the other hand, is the force exerted on an object due to gravity. It is a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction (towards the centre of the planet), and is measured in newtons (N). Weight depends on the gravitational field strength (g) and is calculated using:
W = m × g
on, where g ≈ 1.6 N/kg, the same object would weigh only 1.6 N, but its mass remains 1 kg.
| Mass | Weight |
| Amount of matter | Force of gravity |
| Scalar, kg | Vector, N |
| Remains constant everywhere | Varies with gravitational field strength |
2. Speed and Velocity |
Speed tells us how fast an object is moving. It is a scalar quantity defined as the distance travelled per unit time, with units of metres per second (m/s). Speed cares only about the magnitude, not the direction.
Velocity, however, is a vector quantity. It is the rate of change of displacement – the straight-line distance in a specified direction. If an object returns to its starting point, its average velocity is zero, even if its average speed is high. The formula for average velocity is:
velocity = displacement / time
For example, a runner on a circular track completing one 400 m lap in 50 s has an average speed of 8 m/s. However, because the start and finish are the same point, displacement is zero, so average velocity is 0 m/s.
3. Atomic Number and Mass Number |
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom. It determines the element's identity. In a neutral atom, the atomic number also equals the number of electrons. For example, carbon always has an atomic number of 6.
The mass number (A), also known as the nucleon number, is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. It is roughly equal to the atom's relative atomic mass and is always a whole number. Using standard notation:
ᴀ X z (e.g. ¹²₆C)
trons, giving A=14. The atomic number does not change across isotopes of the same element.
4. Ionic Bonding and Covalent Bonding |
Ionic bonding involves the transfer of one or more electrons from a metal atom to a non-metal atom. This transfer creates oppositely charged ions: positive cations and negative anions. Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between these ions form the ionic bond, typically producing giant ionic lattices with high melting and boiling points. These compounds conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved because the ions are then free to move.
Covalent bonding occurs when non-metal atoms share one or more pairs of electrons to achieve a full outer shell. Molecules formed this way can be simple (e.g. H₂O, CO₂) or giant covalent structures (e.g. diamond, silicon dioxide). Simple molecular substances have relatively low melting points and do not conduct electricity, while giant covalent structures are very hard and have extremely high melting points.
| Ionic | Covalent |
| Electron transfer between metal and non-metal | Electron sharing between non-metals |
| Conducts when molten or in solution | Does not conduct (except graphite) |
| High melting points | Simple molecules: low; giant structures: very high |
5. Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions |
An exothermic reaction is one that releases energy, usually in the form of heat, to the surroundings. This causes the temperature of the surroundings to rise. Examples include combustion reactions, neutralisation between acids and alkalis, and respiration. In an energy profile diagram, the products have lower energy than the reactants, and ΔH is negative.
An endothermic reaction absorbs energy from the surroundings, causing the temperature to drop. Photosynthesis and thermal decomposition reactions are typical examples. Here, the products have higher energy than the reactants, making ΔH positive. A common classroom example is dissolving ammonium nitrate in water, which feels cold to the touch.
Exothermic: Reactants → Products + energy (ΔH negative)
Endothermic: Reactants + energy → Products (ΔH positive)
6. Mitosis and Meiosis |
Mitosis is a type of cell division that produces two genetically identical daughter cells, each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. It occurs during growth, repair, and asexual reproduction. Mitosis maintains the diploid chromosome number (e.g., 46 in humans).
Meiosis, on the other hand, produces four genetically different haploid cells, each containing half the number of chromosomes. It is essential for sexual reproduction and leads to the formation of gametes (sperm and egg cells). During meiosis, two rounds of division occur after a single replication of DNA, introducing genetic variation through independent assortment and crossing over.
| Mitosis | Meiosis |
| Two identical daughter cells | Four non-identical haploid cells |
| Chromosome number maintained | Chromosome number halved |
| For growth and repair | For producing gametes |
7. Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration |
Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose completely, releasing a large amount of energy (approx. 32 molecules of ATP per glucose). It occurs in the mitochondria of cells and produces carbon dioxide and water as waste products. The overall word equation is:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ a lot of energy)
Anaerobic respiration takes place when oxygen is absent or in short supply. In animal cells and some bacteria, glucose is partially broken down to form lactic acid, releasing only about 2 ATP molecules of energy. This leads to an oxygen debt, which must be repaid by breathing heavily after exercise to break down the lactic acid. In yeast and plants, anaerobic respiration produces ethanol and carbon dioxide – a process known as fermentation.
In animals: glucose → lactic acid (+ small amount of energy)
In yeast: glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ small amount of energy)
8. Series and Parallel Circuits |
In a series circuit, components are connected end-to-end in a single loop. The current (I) is the same at all points. The total voltage from the battery is shared across the components, so each gets a fraction of the supply. If one component fails, the entire circuit is broken, and all devices stop working. The total resistance is simply the sum of individual resistances.
In a parallel circuit, each component is connected on its own branch directly across the power supply. The voltage across each branch equals the supply voltage. The total current drawn from the supply is the sum of the currents in each branch. If one branch fails, the others continue to work independently. Adding more branches decreases the overall resistance of the circuit.
| Series | Parallel |
| Current same everywhere | Current splits among branches |
| Voltage shared | Voltage same across each branch |
| One fault stops all | Other branches still work |
9. Diffusion and Osmosis |
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, due to the random kinetic energy of particles. It is a passive process requiring no energy. Diffusion can occur with any particles, including gases and dissolved substances, and can happen in any medium. For example, oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the bloodstream.
Osmosis is a special type of diffusion. It refers specifically to the movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution). Like diffusion, it is passive. Plant roots absorb water by osmosis, and red blood cells can burst (lyse) if placed in pure water due to osmotic influx.
Key difference: Osmosis always involves a partially permeable membrane and only water; diffusion applies to all particles.
10. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures |
An element consists of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Examples include oxygen (O₂), iron (Fe), and helium (He). All atoms of a given element have the same atomic number.
A compound is a substance made from two or more different types of atoms chemically bonded together in fixed proportions. Compounds have properties different from their constituent elements. They can be separated only by chemical reactions. Water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are compounds.
A mixture contains two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined. They retain their individual properties and can be separated using physical techniques such as filtration, distillation or chromatography. Air is a mixture of gases; seawater is a mixture of water, salts and other dissolved substances.
Important: A compound has a fixed composition, while a mixture can have variable composition.
