📚 Chemical Equilibrium | GCSE Edexcel

Chemical equilibrium is a key topic in GCSE Edexcel Chemistry. Many reactions are reversible and can reach a state of dynamic balance. This article covers the essential principles, Le Chatelier's rule, and the industrial processes that rely on equilibrium concepts, such as the Haber process.

1. Reversible Reactions |

A reversible reaction is one in which the products can react together to re-form the original reactants. The reaction occurs in both the forward and backward directions and is represented by the symbol ⇌.

For example, when solid ammonium chloride is heated, it decomposes into ammonia and hydrogen chloride gases: NH₄Cl(s) ⇌ NH₃(g) + HCl(g). On cooling, the two gases recombine to form the solid again.

2. Dynamic Equilibrium |

Dynamic equilibrium is established when a reversible reaction occurs in a closed system and the rate of the forward reaction becomes exactly equal to the rate of the backward reaction. At this stage, the concentrations of all reactants and products remain constant because the two opposing reactions continue at the same speed.

It is crucial to understand that equilibrium is dynamic, not static. Reactant molecules are continuously being converted into products, and product molecules are continuously being converted back into reactants. Only the overall amounts appear unchanged on the macroscopic scale.

3. Features of a System at Equilibrium |

Equilibrium can only be reached in a closed system, where no matter can enter or leave. The rates of the forward and backward reactions are equal. The concentrations of all chemical species remain constant, but they are not necessarily equal. The system is at a minimum Gibbs energy under the given conditions, and the equilibrium position can be approached from either direction.

At the macroscopic level, no observable change occurs – colour, pressure, and concentration stay the same. At the molecular level, however, both reactions proceed without interruption.

4. Le Chatelier's Principle |

Le Chatelier's Principle states that if a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, temperature, or pressure, the position of equilibrium shifts in the direction that tends to oppose the effect of the change. This principle allows chemists to predict how altering a condition will affect the yield of products.

For example, if the concentration of a reactant is increased, the equilibrium shifts to consume the added substance, favouring the forward reaction. If the temperature is raised for an exothermic reaction, the equilibrium moves in the endothermic direction to absorb heat.

5. Effect of Concentration Changes |

Adding more of a reactant causes the equilibrium to shift to the right (towards the products) to use up the extra reactant. Removing a product as it forms also shifts the equilibrium to the right to produce more product. Conversely, adding a product or removing a reactant shifts the equilibrium to the left (towards the reactants).

Consider the equilibrium: N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). If extra nitrogen or hydrogen is injected into the reaction vessel, the system responds by producing more ammonia. If ammonia is continually removed, the forward reaction is favoured until a new equilibrium is established.

6. Effect of Temperature Changes |

The effect of temperature on an equilibrium depends on whether the forward reaction is exothermic (ΔH negative) or endothermic (ΔH positive). For an exothermic forward reaction, raising the temperature shifts the equilibrium to the left (endothermic reverse reaction), lowering the product yield. Lowering the temperature favours the forward exothermic reaction and increases product yield.

In the Haber process, N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ erature would give a higher percentage of ammonia at equilibrium, but the rate would be too slow for industrial purposes.

7. Effect of Pressure Changes (Gaseous Reactions) |

Changing the pressure affects the equilibrium position only in reactions involving gases, and only when there is a difference in the total number of gas molecules on each side of the equation. Increasing the pressure shifts the equilibrium towards the side with fewer gas molecules. Decreasing the pressure shifts it towards the side with more gas molecules.

For the Haber process, 4 moles of gaseous reactants (1 mol N₂ + 3 mol H₂) produce 2 moles of gaseous product (2 mol NH₃). Therefore, high pressure favours the forward reaction, producing more ammonia. However, extremely high pressures are expensive and require reinforced equipment, so a compromise is used in industry.

8. Effect of a Catalyst on Equilibrium |

A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, but it lowers the activation energy for both the forward and backward reactions by exactly the same amount. Consequently, a catalyst has no effect on the position of equilibrium. It does not change the equilibrium yield of products.

What a catalyst does is to increase the rate at which equilibrium is attained. In industrial processes, a catalyst is vital because it allows equilibrium to be reached rapidly without the need for extreme temperatures, saving time and energy. The iron catalyst in the Haber process is a classic example.

9. The Haber Process: An Industrial Application |

The Haber process synthesises ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen. The reversible reaction is N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). Nitrogen is obtained from the air, and hydrogen is produced mainly from natural gas (methane). Ammonia is a key raw material for fertilisers such as ammonium nitrate and for making nitric acid.

The reaction is carried out at about 450 °C and 200 atmospheres pressure, using iron as a catalyst. The ammonia is continuously liquefied and removed, and unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled back into the reactor.

10. Compromise Conditions for Ammonia Production |

The chosen conditions for the Haber process represent a balance between reaction rate, equilibrium yield, and economic factors. A lower temperature (e.g., 200 °C) would give a higher equilibrium yield of ammonia, but the rate would be too slow, making the process uneconomical. A higher temperature (e.g., 450 °C) gives a faster rate but a lower equilibrium yield.

Higher pressure (above 200 atm) favours the forward reaction and improves yield, but it raises the cost of compressing gases and demands stronger, more expensive vessels. Therefore, 200 atm is a compromise. The iron catalyst does not increase the equilibrium yield but allows the reaction to proceed at a useful rate even at the moderate temperature of 450 °C.

11. The Contact Process: Production of Sulfuric Acid |

The Contact Process is another important industrial equilibrium used to manufacture sulfuric acid. The key stage is the reversible oxidation of sulfur dioxide: 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g). The forward reaction is exothermic, and there are 3 moles of gas on the left compared with 2 moles on the right.

Industrially, the reaction is performed at about 450 °C, with a vanadium(V) oxide (V₂O₅) catalyst, and at a pressure only slightly above atmospheric (around 1-2 atm). Even though higher pressure would favour the forward reaction, the equilibrium yield is already very high at low pressure, so building expensive high-pressure vessels is not justified. The moderate temperature is a compromise between rate and yield. The SO₃ produced is then absorbed in concentrated sulfuric acid to form oleum, which is later diluted to produce sulfuric acid.

12. Summary of Key Points for Edexcel GCSE | Edexcel GCSE

Reversible reactions can reach dynamic equilibrium only in a closed system. At equilibrium, the forward and backward rates are equal, and all concentrations remain constant. Le Chatelier's Principle predicts how equilibrium shifts in response to changes in concentration, temperature, and pressure (for gaseous systems with different mole numbers). A catalyst speeds up both reactions equally and does not alter the equilibrium position, only the time needed to reach equilibrium. The Haber and Contact processes illustrate how chemists use compromise conditions to optimise rate, yield, and cost in industry.
