📚 Pre-U AQA Economics: Winter Intensive Revision Plan | Pre-U AQA
The winter break provides an uninterrupted block of time to revisit the entire Pre-U AQA Economics specification and sharpen exam skills. A well-organised plan prevents last-minute panic and ensures deep understanding. This 6-week revision schedule combines micro and macro topics, quantitative methods, and essay practice, with built-in review sessions.
The plan works best when it is treated as a working document rather than a rigid timetable. If a session overruns or a topic proves harder than expected, adjust the following days instead of abandoning the schedule. What matters is that every week ends with at least one timed, exam-style piece of writing.
1. Revision Plan Overview |
The plan progresses from core microeconomics in Weeks 1–2 to macroeconomics in Weeks 3–4, with Weeks 5–6 dedicated to skills integration and exam simulation. Each week has 4–5 study sessions, each lasting about 90 minutes. Start each session with a 5-minute review of previous work, then tackle new material, and end by testing yourself with exam-style questions.
The table below sets out the six-week structure. Use it as a map, and tick off each block as you complete it, so progress is visible rather than assumed.
| Week | Focus | Core Outcomes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Micro foundations | PPF, demand and supply, elasticity, surplus |
| 2 | Market structures and market failure | Efficiency, externalities, intervention, government failure |
| 3 | Macro foundations | AD/AS, multiplier, unemployment, inflation, growth |
| 4 | Policy and the global economy | Fiscal, monetary, supply-side, trade, development |
| 5 | Quantitative methods | Index numbers, real values, data interpretation |
| 6 | Exam simulation | Timed papers, essay structure, evaluation |
Four working principles make the schedule effective. Keep them running through all six weeks.
- Active recall: instead of re-reading notes, close the book and write down key points or draw diagrams from memory.
- Interleaved practice: mix topics within a session to improve your ability to discriminate between concepts.
- Error logging: maintain a dedicated notebook for mistakes and difficult concepts, reviewing it weekly.
- Scheduled breaks: use a timer to work in 25-minute focused blocks with 5-minute breaks, then a longer break after four cycles.
A single 90-minute session should be split roughly into 5 minutes of recall on yesterday's work, 50 minutes of new content, 20 minutes of applied questions, and 15 minutes of error-log review. This rhythm keeps the session active rather than passive.
2. Week 1: Foundations of Microeconomics |
Week 1 rebuilds the microeconomic toolkit that every later topic depends on. Begin with the fundamental economic problem: scarce resources against unlimited wants, which forces choice and creates opportunity cost. The production possibility frontier (PPF) is the standard diagram here, and you must be able to distinguish a movement along the curve (reallocation of resources) from a shift of the curve (a change in productive potential).
Next, master demand and supply. The most common exam error is confusing a shift of the curve with a movement along it: a change in price causes movement, while changes in income, tastes, prices of substitutes or complements, and expectations cause shifts. Practise drawing equilibrium shifts, then the effects of taxes and subsidies on equilibrium price and quantity.
Week 1 must end with the four elasticities and their formulas, all of which appear in data-response questions as well as essays.
PED = %ΔQuantity demanded ÷ %ΔPrice
PES = %ΔQuantity supplied ÷ %ΔPrice
YED = %ΔQuantity demanded ÷ %ΔIncome
XED = %ΔQuantity demanded of A ÷ %ΔPrice of B
Link each elasticity to a real business or policy decision. For example, if PED is inelastic (|PED| < 1), a firm raising price increases total revenue, which explains why governments tax cigarettes and fuel heavily. If YED is negative, the good is inferior, and demand falls as incomes rise — a point that frequently earns application marks in macro essays about living standards.
Finish the week with consumer and producer surplus, and the incidence of an indirect tax. You should be able to show that the burden falls more heavily on the side of the market that is more inelastic, and to shade the deadweight loss triangle on a diagram.
3. Week 2: Market Structures and Market Failure |
Week 2 moves from how markets work to how well they work. Begin with the efficiency criteria: allocative efficiency occurs where price equals marginal cost and social welfare is maximised; productive efficiency occurs at the lowest point of the average cost curve; dynamic efficiency refers to innovation over time; and X-inefficiency describes organisational slack.
Then compare market structures. Perfect competition assumes many small firms, homogeneous products, free entry and exit, and perfect information; in the long run, normal profit only. Monopoly faces a downward-sloping demand curve and can earn supernormal profit in the long run, but may also generate economies of scale that benefit consumers. Oligopoly is characterised by interdependence, which explains price rigidity, tacit collusion and game-theoretic behaviour.
Market failure is the analytical heart of Week 2. Work through each source with a diagram and a real example.
- Negative externalities: divergence between private and social cost, causing overproduction.
- Positive externalities: underproduction of goods with social benefits exceeding private benefits.
- Public goods: non-rivalry and non-excludability create the free-rider problem and missing markets.
- Merit and demerit goods: information failure leads to under- or over-consumption.
- Asymmetric information: one party knows more than the other, as in used-car or insurance markets.
- Factor immobility and market power: labour may be geographically or occupationally stuck; monopolies may restrict output and raise price.
Government intervention follows directly: indirect taxes to internalise external costs, subsidies for positive externalities, regulation and tradable permits, state provision of public goods, and information campaigns. Each has strengths and weaknesses, and the strongest answers evaluate whether the cure is worse than the disease.
Government failure deserves a full session of its own. Look for unintended consequences, administrative cost, information gaps, regulatory capture and the distortion of incentives. A candidate who can name a specific government failure in context is usually writing at the top level.
4. Week 3: Macroeconomic Foundations |
Week 3 starts with the circular flow of income: households supply factors and receive income, firms produce and pay factor incomes, and the flow is altered by injections (investment, government spending, exports) and withdrawals (saving, taxation, imports). Equilibrium national income occurs where injections equal withdrawals.
Aggregate demand and aggregate supply provide the main analytical framework for the rest of the course.
AD = C + I + G + (X − M)
Multiplier = 1 ÷ (1 − MPC) = 1 ÷ (MPS + MPT + MPM)
You must be able to distinguish a movement along the AD curve (caused by a change in the price level) from a shift of the AD curve (caused by any other determinant). On the supply side, the Keynesian and classical AS curves tell very different stories about the effect of an expansionary policy on output and the price level, and the difference is worth an evaluation mark in almost every macro essay.
Unemployment and inflation follow. Learn the categories — frictional, structural, seasonal, cyclical and real-wage unemployment — with a cause and a policy response for each. For inflation, distinguish demand-pull from cost-push, understand how CPI and RPI are constructed, and be able to discuss who gains and who loses from unanticipated inflation.
Complete the week with the short-run and long-run Phillips curve, the trade cycle, the output gap, and the structure of the balance of payments. Precise definitions matter: the current account covers trade in goods and services plus income and transfers, while the financial account records flows of investment.
5. Week 4: Policy Instruments and the Global Economy |
Week 4 turns to policy. Fiscal policy covers government spending and taxation, both discretionary and automatic. Automatic stabilisers smooth the cycle without a deliberate decision, while discretionary changes require political approval and suffer time lags. Be ready to discuss the Laffer curve and the trade-off between redistribution and incentives.
Monetary policy operates through the interest rate transmission mechanism: a change in the base rate affects borrowing costs, asset prices, confidence and the exchange rate, and thereby consumption, investment and net exports. Quantitative easing is the unconventional tool used when rates approach zero, and its costs — asset price inflation and exit difficulty — are increasingly examinable.
Supply-side policies divide into market-based measures (deregulation, privatisation, lower marginal tax rates, flexible labour markets) and interventionist measures (education, training, infrastructure, industrial policy). Strong answers explain the transmission channel and the time horizon, because supply-side effects usually take years to appear.
International economics completes the week. Revise comparative advantage and the terms of trade, the arguments for and against protectionism, and the operation of fixed versus floating exchange rate systems. Then move to development: the Lorenz curve, the Gini coefficient, the Human Development Index and the distinction between growth and development.
Trade-offs are the currency of this week. Every instrument has a cost, and the highest marks come from comparing two instruments in a specific context rather than listing them side by side.
6. Week 5: Quantitative Methods and Data Skills |
Week 5 is dedicated to the numerical and data-handling skills that distinguish a good economist from a good essayist. These skills are assessed directly, and they also strengthen application marks across every other paper.
Start with index numbers and the conversion between nominal and real values.
Index number = (Value in year n ÷ Value in base year) × 100
Real value = (Nominal value ÷ Price index) × 100
Practise percentage change, percentage points and growth rates. A rise in inflation from 3% to 5% is a two-percentage-point rise but a 67% increase in the inflation rate; examiners use this distinction to test precision. Similarly, remember that a fall in the rate of inflation is disinflation, not deflation.
Next, handle weighted and composite measures: the construction of a consumer price index using a basket of goods and weights, the Gini coefficient derived from the Lorenz curve, and the HDI as a composite of health, education and income indicators. Be able to say what each measure omits — GDP ignores distribution and environmental damage, while the HDI ignores inequality within a country.
Finally, develop critical reading of data. Look for the base year, the units, whether the figures are nominal or real, the sample size, and any break in the series. Correlation is not causation, and an economic model's assumptions should be tested against the evidence rather than assumed away.
In data-response questions, quote a specific figure, explain what it shows using theory, and then evaluate. A sentence that names a number and links it to a concept consistently scores above a paragraph of general comment.
7. Week 6: Exam Simulation and Essay Technique |
Week 6 converts knowledge into marks. Work under timed conditions with past papers, and mark your own answers against the published scheme afterwards. Allocate roughly one minute per mark for short questions and slightly longer for extended essays, then check whether you finished and where you ran out of time.
A reliable extended-essay structure looks like this: a short introduction defining terms and stating the direction of your argument; two or three analytical paragraphs, each with a diagram and a real-world example; an evaluation paragraph that weighs the arguments and reaches a judgement; and a brief conclusion that answers the question directly.
Evaluation is where most candidates lose marks. Practise the standard evaluative moves: it depends on the time horizon; it depends on the elasticity or the size of the multiplier; it depends on other variables moving at the same time; it depends on the reliability of the data; and the policy may conflict with another objective.
