1. Introduction to Gas Exchange |
All living cells require a constant supply of oxygen to release energy through aerobic respiration. At the same time, carbon dioxide produced must be removed to prevent toxicity. In large multicellular organisms like humans, specialised respiratory surfaces have evolved to facilitate this exchange efficiently.
The gas exchange system works closely with the circulatory system. Oxygen diffuses from the lungs into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the lungs to be exhaled. The driving force is always a concentration gradient.
2. The Human Respiratory System: Structure |
The human respiratory system consists of the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The lungs are protected by the ribcage and a muscular sheet known as the diaphragm lies beneath them.
Key structures to remember: The trachea is supported by C-shaped cartilage rings to keep it open. The bronchi are the two branches entering each lung. Bronchioles are smaller tubes without cartilage. Alveoli are the terminal clusters where gas exchange actually occurs.
3. The Pathway of Air |
Air enters the body through the nose or mouth. The nasal cavity is lined with hairs and mucus to filter dust and pathogens. It also warms and moistens the incoming air. The air then passes the pharynx and larynx before entering the trachea.
From the trachea, air moves into the bronchi, then into the bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveolar ducts and alveoli. This branching system ensures a large surface area for gas exchange.
4. Alveoli: The Site of Gas Exchange |
Alveoli are microscopic air sacs surrounded by a dense network of blood capillaries. The wall of each alveolus is only one cell thick, as is the wall of the capillary. This reduces the diffusion distance for gases to a minimum.
Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air space into the blood, where it binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells. Carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction, from the blood plasma into the alveoli. Both gases move from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration.
5. Adaptations of Alveoli for Efficient Diffusion |
Alveoli display several key adaptations for rapid gas exchange: (1) Large surface area – millions of alveoli create roughly 70 m² of exchange surface. (2) Thin walls – the alveolar epithelium and capillary endothelium are each one cell thick, giving a very short diffusion path.
(3) Rich blood supply – a dense capillary network maintains a steep concentration gradient by continually removing oxygenated blood. (4) Moist inner surface – the layer of moisture lining the alveoli helps gases dissolve before diffusing. (5) Ventilation – breathing constantly refreshes the air in the alveoli, keeping oxygen concentration high and carbon dioxide concentration low.
6. Breathing Mechanism: Inhalation (Inspiration) |
Inhalation is an active process. The external intercostal muscles contract, raising the ribcage upwards and outwards. At the same time, the diaphragm contracts and flattens. These actions increase the volume of the thoracic cavity.
As the volume increases, the pressure inside the thorax decreases below atmospheric pressure. Air is drawn into the lungs through the air passages to equalise the pressure difference. The lungs inflate accordingly.
7. Breathing Mechanism: Exhalation (Expiration) |
Quiet exhalation is largely a passive process. The external intercostal muscles relax and the ribcage drops downwards and inwards. The diaphragm relaxes and returns to its domed shape. The volume of the thoracic cavity decreases.
When volume decreases, the pressure inside the thorax rises above atmospheric pressure. Air is forced out of the lungs. During forced exhalation, the internal intercostal muscles and abdominal muscles assist actively to push more air out.
8. Comparison of Inhaled and Exhaled Air |
The composition of atmospheric air differs markedly from exhaled air due to gas exchange in the lungs. The table below shows approximate values:
| Gas | Inhaled Air (%) | Exhaled Air (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Oxygen (O₂) | 21 | 16 |
| Carbon dioxide (CO₂) | 0.04 | 4 |
| Nitrogen (N₂) | 78 | 78 |
| Water vapour | Variable | Saturated |
Exhaled air contains less oxygen and more carbon dioxide. It is also warmer and saturated with water vapour. Notably, nitrogen is inert and its concentration remains unchanged. This can be tested in the laboratory using limewater, which turns cloudy in the presence of exhaled air due to carbon dioxide.
9. Gas Exchange at the Tissues |
Once oxygenated blood reaches the body tissues, the reverse gas exchange occurs. Tissue cells continuously use oxygen for respiration, so the concentration of oxygen inside cells is lower than in the capillary blood. Oxygen diffuses out of the blood into the cells.
Similarly, metabolically active cells produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, which dissolves in the tissue fluid and blood plasma. The concentration of carbon dioxide is higher in the tissues than in the blood, so it diffuses into the blood. This maintains a supply of deoxygenated blood returning to the lungs.
10. Transport of Respiratory Gases in Blood |
Oxygen is transported mainly by binding to the iron-containing protein haemoglobin inside red blood cells, forming oxyhaemoglobin. A small fraction dissolves directly in plasma. Each haemoglobin molecule can carry up to four oxygen molecules.
Carbon dioxide is transported in three ways: (1) about 5–10% dissolved in plasma; (2) about 20–25% bound to haemoglobin as carbaminohaemoglobin; (3) the majority (about 70%) is converted into bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻) in red blood cells, a reaction catalysed by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase.
11. Effect of Exercise on Breathing Rate |
During strenuous exercise, muscles contract more rapidly and require more ATP. This increases the rate of aerobic respiration, leading to higher demand for oxygen and greater production of carbon dioxide. The breathing rate and the depth of breathing both increase.
The brain's respiratory centre in the medulla oblongata detects rising CO₂ levels in the blood (actually a slight drop in pH). It sends impulses to the intercostal muscles and diaphragm to speed up and deepen ventilation. This helps to remove CO₂ and take in more O₂ efficiently.
After exercise, oxygen debt may occur. Lactic acid produced by anaerobic respiration needs to be oxidised, so breathing remains elevated for some time to supply extra oxygen for this process.
12. Smoking and Damage to the Gas Exchange System |
Smoking severely damages the gas exchange system. Tobacco smoke contains tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide and other carcinogens. Tar damages the cilia lining the airways, reducing the ability to sweep mucus and pathogens out of the lungs. This leads to smoker’s cough and increased infections such as bronchitis.
Carbon monoxide binds irreversibly to haemoglobin with a much higher affinity than oxygen, reducing the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. This can starve tissues of oxygen. The carcinogens in tar can cause cells lining the airways to mutate, leading to lung cancer. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema are also strongly linked to smoking; emphysema destroys alveolar walls, reducing surface area for gas exchange.
