1. Scarcity and Choice |
Grasp the core problem of economics—scarcity—and the decision-making tools it necessitates.
Scarcity: The condition where limited resources cannot meet unlimited human wants. Use the acronym SCARCE: 'Supply Cannot Always Reach Consumer Expectations'. It compels trade-offs.
Opportunity Cost: The value of the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made. Recall 'NBA' – the 'Next Best Alternative'. Every decision carries an invisible price tag.
Factors of Production: The inputs used to produce goods and services: Capital, Enterprise, Land, Labour. Remember the acronym 'CELL' – the basic building block of economic activity, just like a biological cell.
Production Possibility Frontier (PPF): A curve showing the maximum output combinations of two goods achievable with existing resources. Visualise 'Pushing Possibilities Forward' – it illustrates opportunity cost and efficiency.
Economic Goods vs Free Goods: Economic goods are scarce and command a price; free goods are abundant and cost nothing. Think: 'Free goods are FREE – Found Ready Everywhere Easy.'
2. Demand and Supply |
Master the building blocks of market analysis with memorable triggers for demand, supply, and equilibrium.
Demand: The quantity of a good consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices. Law of Demand: as price rises, quantity demanded falls. Visual aid: 'D for Downward sloping curve.'
Supply: The quantity producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. Law of Supply: higher price incentivises greater output. Mnemonic: 'S for Skyward sloping curve.'
Equilibrium: The price where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied, with no tendency to change. Think 'E for Equal' – market forces are in balance.
Excess Demand (Shortage): Occurs when price is below equilibrium – quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied. 'ED = Extra Demand' chasing too few goods.
Shifts vs Movements: A movement along a curve is caused solely by a change in the good's own price. A shift occurs when a non-price determinant changes. For demand shifts, recall 'PASIFIC': Population, Advertising, Substitutes/Complements, Income, Fashion/trends, Interest rates, Complements (prices of).
3. Elasticities | 弹性
Elasticity measures responsiveness—lock in formulas and interpretations with simple imagery.
