📚 Christopher Columbus: Voyages, Legacy and Controversy |
Christopher Columbus is the European navigator whose four Atlantic crossings between 1492 and 1504 joined the Old World and the New in a permanent, irreversible way. He is at once celebrated as a bold seafarer of the Age of Discovery and criticised as the man whose voyages opened the door to conquest, enslavement and demographic catastrophe in the Americas.
1. Who Was Christopher Columbus? |
Christopher Columbus (Italian: Cristoforo Colombo; Spanish: Cristóbal Colón) was born around 1451 in Genoa, then an independent maritime republic in north-western Italy. He died on 20 May 1506 in Valladolid, Spain, still insisting that the lands he had reached were the eastern edge of Asia rather than a continent previously unknown to Europeans.
His career sits at the meeting point of three historical currents: the commercial rivalry between Portugal and Castile, the Renaissance recovery of classical geography, and the technological advances in shipbuilding and navigation that made long ocean voyages feasible.

2. Early Life in Genoa and the Making of a Sailor |
Columbus was born into an ordinary family. His father, Domenico Colombo, was a wool weaver, and his mother, Susanna Fontanarossa, came from a family of weavers near Genoa. The household was respectable but not wealthy, and Columbus received relatively little formal education — a fact that later made his self-taught mastery of cosmography and navigation all the more striking.
Genoa was a seafaring city, and Columbus went to sea young. By his early twenties he was sailing on Genoese commercial vessels in the Mediterranean and possibly as far as the Aegean island of Chios. In 1476 he was on a ship that was attacked and sunk off the Portuguese coast; he swam ashore at Lagos and made his way to Lisbon.
Lisbon was the ideal place for an ambitious sailor. Portugal was then the leading maritime power in Europe, pushing down the African coast under Henry the Navigator's successors. Columbus joined Portuguese voyages, married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo — daughter of the captain who had governed Porto Santo — and absorbed the charts, winds and rumours of the Atlantic world.
3. The Geographic Theory Behind the Westward Route |
Columbus's plan was simple in principle: if the Earth is a sphere, then sailing west from Europe should eventually reach Asia. The idea itself was not original — the Florentine physician Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli had already argued for it — but Columbus pursued it with unusual persistence.
The plan contained one crucial error. Columbus relied on the estimate of the Greek geographer Ptolemy, accepted and extended by Marco Polo's reported distances, and concluded that Asia lay only about 2,400 nautical miles west of the Canary Islands. The true figure is closer to 10,000 nautical miles. He also underestimated the size of the Earth and overestimated the length of the Eurasian landmass.
In other words, Columbus was wrong about the geography but right about the possibility. If the Americas had not existed, his crews would almost certainly have died before reaching Japan. The discovery of the New World was, in a real sense, an accident produced by a miscalculation.
4. Seeking a Sponsor: Portugal, Castile and the Capitulations of Santa Fe |
Columbus first presented his project to King John II of Portugal in 1484. A committee of experts rejected it, partly because Portuguese navigators were already confident that the route around Africa was the more reliable way to the Indian Ocean spice trade.
He then turned to Castile. In 1486 he gained an audience with Queen Isabella I, but a commission led by Hernando de Talavera kept his proposal under review for years, mainly on the grounds that his estimate of the distance to Asia was implausibly small. Columbus followed the court from city to city, surviving on occasional payments and the support of influential friars.
Only after the conquest of Granada in January 1492 did the Crown agree. The Capitulations of Santa Fe (April 1492) granted Columbus the hereditary titles of Admiral of the Ocean Sea and Governor of all lands he discovered, plus one tenth of the profits from trade within his jurisdiction. Castile, newly unified and eager to compete with Portugal, was now willing to gamble.
5. The First Voyage of 1492 | 1492 年首航
The expedition left Palos de la Frontera on 3 August 1492 with three ships: the Santa María (a carrack, owned by Juan de la Cosa and commanded by Columbus), the Pinta (commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón) and the Niña (commanded by Vicente Yáñez Pinzón). After reprovisioning in the Canary Islands, the fleet left La Gomera on 6 September and struck out west into open ocean.
The crossing took thirty-three days. As the winds failed and the crews grew fearful, Columbus kept two logbooks — a false one showing shorter distances, so that the sailors would not panic. On 7 October he changed course to the south-west after birds were seen flying inland.
At about two o'clock on the morning of 12 October 1492, a lookout on the Pinta named Rodrigo de Triana sighted land. Columbus later claimed he had seen a light the previous evening and kept the life annuity that had been promised to the first person to spot land — a small detail that already hints at the disputes that would follow him.
6. Where Did He Land? The Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola |
The landfall was an island in the Bahamas that the Taíno inhabitants called Guanahaní. Columbus renamed it San Salvador and claimed it for Castile. The exact island remains disputed among historians; San Salvador Island (formerly Watling Island) is the most widely accepted candidate, with Samana Cay and Grand Turk also proposed.
Believing he had reached the Indies, Columbus called the inhabitants "Indians" — a name that stuck for centuries. He then sailed on to Cuba, which he named Juana and believed to be the Chinese mainland, and to Hispaniola, which he named La Española.
On Christmas Day 1492 the Santa María ran aground on a reef off Hispaniola and could not be saved. Columbus used its timbers to build a small settlement called La Navidad, leaving about forty men behind. He sailed for Spain on 16 January 1493 aboard the Niña, was driven into Lisbon by a storm, and reached Palos on 15 March 1493.
7. The Later Voyages, 1493-1504 |
Columbus made three further voyages. Together they transformed a single landfall into a sustained colonial project and extended European knowledge of the Caribbean and the American mainland.
| Voyage | Dates | Key outcomes |
| Second | 1493-1496 | 17 ships, roughly 1,200-1,500 settlers; sighted the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and Jamaica; founded La Isabela on Hispaniola; found La Navidad destroyed |
| Third | 1498-1500 | Reached Trinidad and the coast of Venezuela, sighting South America and the Orinoco delta; arrested on corruption charges and sent home in chains in 1500 |
| Fourth | 1502-1504 | Explored the coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama; stranded in Jamaica for a year after ships were worm-eaten; returned to Spain in November 1504 |
Two diplomatic consequences deserve attention. The papal bulls of 1493 and the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494 divided the non-European world between Spain and Portugal along a line in the Atlantic, reshaping the entire colonial map of the following century.
8. Governorship, Colonisation and the Taíno Tragedy |
As Governor of the Indies, Columbus presided over a colonising regime that demanded tribute in gold and cotton from the Taíno population. Those who failed to deliver faced punishment; those who resisted were crushed by Spanish arms, horses and dogs. The encomienda system, formalised from 1503, bound indigenous labour to Spanish settlers.
The consequences were catastrophic. Warfare, forced labour, displacement and, above all, epidemic disease — to which the indigenous population had no immunity — caused a demographic collapse. On Hispaniola, a population estimated in the hundreds of thousands in 1492 had fallen to a few tens of thousands within a generation.
Columbus also shipped indigenous captives to Spain as slaves, and he and his brothers faced repeated revolts from both settlers and Taíno leaders. In 1500 the Crown sent Francisco de Bobadilla to investigate; he arrested Columbus and his brothers and sent them home in chains. Although Columbus was later restored to his titles, his authority as a governor was never fully recovered.
9. The Columbian Exchange and the Birth of Global Trade |
Historians use the term "Columbian Exchange" to describe the transatlantic transfer of plants, animals, people, microbes and ideas that followed 1492. It was a two-way process, and its effects were felt on every continent.
- From the Americas to the Old World: maize, potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa, tobacco, chillies, vanilla and rubber.
- From the Old World to the Americas: wheat, sugar cane, coffee, horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, iron tools and gunpowder.
- Disease: smallpox, measles and influenza travelled west with devastating results; syphilis may have travelled east.
- People: the transatlantic slave trade began in the early sixteenth century to supply labour for sugar and mining.
Financially, the voyages brought silver, sugar and later tobacco into European commercial networks, helped shift the centre of gravity of the world economy from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, and laid the foundations of what historians call the early modern world economy.
10. Did Columbus Know He Had Found a New World?
This is one of the most persistent myths in the subject, and examiners reward precise answers. Columbus never accepted that he had reached a separate continent. He continued to argue that Cuba was part of mainland Asia and urged his crews to swear as much. As late as his fourth voyage he was still searching for a strait that would lead through the islands to the Indian Ocean.
There is a nuance: after his third voyage, in a letter to the Spanish court, he described the lands he had found as "otro mundo" — another world — and compared the Orinoco to one of the four rivers of Paradise. But this was a theological and cosmological statement, not a recognition of a separate continent in the modern sense.
The person who finally established that the Americas were a new continent was Amerigo Vespucci, whose accounts led the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller to print the name "America" on his world map in 1507 — the moment the New World received a name that was not Columbus's.
11. Legacy, Commemoration and Public Controversy |
Columbus's voyages undoubtedly changed the course of world history. They established permanent contact between two hemispheres, triggered the Columbian Exchange, opened European exploration, conquest and settlement of the Americas, and began an early form of globalisation.
Yet his reputation has become one of the most contested in modern public life. The same landfall is commemorated in different ways across the world:
