📚 KS3 CAIE Science: Exam Techniques and Mark Schemes | KS3 CAIE
Knowing the science is only half of the story in KS3 CAIE Science. Examiners award marks for precise answers, correct scientific vocabulary and clear explanations, so a student who understands a topic perfectly can still lose marks simply by answering vaguely or by ignoring the command word. This guide explains how Cambridge-style mark schemes work and gives practical techniques you can use straight away in Biology, Chemistry and Physics papers.
1. Why Exam Technique Matters |
Exam technique is not a trick; it is the skill of showing what you know in the form the examiner expects. Two students may both understand photosynthesis, but the one who writes the stages in the correct sequence with the correct terms will collect more marks than the one who writes a single vague sentence.
In CAIE-style papers, marks are awarded point by point. Each mark usually corresponds to one scientific idea, one correct value or one valid observation, so a three-mark question normally expects three separate points rather than one long sentence.
Marking is positive. Examiners look for statements that deserve credit rather than deducting marks for mistakes, which means it is almost always worth writing a sensible scientific point even when you are not fully sure of the answer.
- Content gets you close to the mark; technique converts knowledge into marks.
- Vague writing such as 'it gets bigger' rarely earns credit; precise writing such as 'the volume increases by 12 cm³' usually does.
- A well-trained student reads the mark allocation as a plan for the answer.
2. Understanding Command Words |
Command words are the key to answering correctly. The table below lists common command words with their meaning, their Chinese meaning and what examiners expect from your response.
| Command Word | Meaning | 中文含义 | How to Answer (Example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name / State | Give a brief answer without explanation. | 'Heart.' |
| Describe | Say what something looks like or what happens (trends, observations). | 'The line rises steadily from 0 to 60 seconds.' |
| Explain | Give reasons or causes; use 'because' and scientific ideas. | 'The ball accelerates because gravity pulls it downwards.' |
| Compare | Identify similarities and differences between two or more things. | 'Both metals are shiny, but iron is denser than aluminium.' |
| Suggest | Apply knowledge to a new situation; offer a sensible scientific idea. | 'We can use a filter to separate the sand.' |
| Calculate | Use numbers and a formula to work out a value; show working. | 'speed = 240 m ÷ 30 s = 8 m/s' / 速度 = 240 m ÷ 30 s = 8 m/s。 |
| Predict | Say what you think will happen next, using the pattern or theory. | 'The mass will increase because more gas is produced.' |
| Give a reason | One mark for one scientific cause. | 'It is a good conductor of electricity.' |
| Identify | Pick out the correct item from data, a diagram or a list. |
| Draw / Plot | Produce a diagram or graph with labels, axes and units. | Axes: time / s and temperature / °C. |
| Evaluate / Discuss | Use evidence to judge benefits and drawbacks, then reach a conclusion. | 'This method is more reliable, although it takes longer.' |
Notice that 'describe' and 'explain' are not interchangeable. A description says what happens; an explanation says why it happens using a scientific mechanism. If a question says 'explain', a purely descriptive answer usually gains only one mark at most.
3. Reading the Question Properly |
Before writing anything, read the whole question, including any information printed above it. Scientific questions often hide the key data in a sentence, a table or a diagram, and the number of marks printed in brackets tells you how many separate points are needed.
- Underline the command word and circle the data, the units and words such as 'increase', 'compare' or 'in terms of'.
- Count the marks before you write, then plan exactly that many separate points.
- Check the required form of the answer: a unit, a direction, a balanced equation or a comparison of two things.
- Re-read the question afterwards to confirm you answered the question that was asked, not the one you expected.
If a question uses a context such as a factory, a hospital or a spacecraft, the science behind it is still from the syllabus. Read the context once to understand the situation, then answer with standard scientific ideas rather than invented detail.
4. How Mark Schemes Work | 评分标准如何运作
A mark scheme is a list of creditworthy points written by the examiners. A typical row shows one mark for an observation and one mark for a reason, for example: 'the temperature of the water increases (1); because energy is transferred from the flame to the water (1)'.
Mark scheme language is very specific. Learning these four labels helps you understand why two answers that seem similar can score differently.
| Mark scheme term | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| accept | An alternative wording with the same scientific meaning also scores
