📚 GCSE AQA Chemistry: Electrochemistry Revision Guide | GCSE AQA

Electrochemistry is a core topic in GCSE AQA Chemistry that combines key ideas about ions, electron transfer, and energy changes. It covers the principles of electrolysis for extracting metals and purifying copper, as well as the operation of simple chemical cells and hydrogen fuel cells. Mastering this topic means you can confidently predict electrode products, write balanced half equations, and link laboratory processes to real-world industrial applications.

1. Introduction to Electrolysis |

Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound using direct current (d.c.) electricity. The substance that is broken down is called the electrolyte, which must be either molten or dissolved in water so that the ions are free to move and carry charge.

During electrolysis, positively charged cations migrate towards the negatively charged cathode, where they gain electrons (reduction). Negatively charged anions migrate towards the positively charged anode, where they lose electrons (oxidation).

A useful mnemonic is RED CAT (REDuction at CAThode) and AN OX (OXidation at ANode). Electrolysis only occurs when the circuit is complete and a d.c. supply is connected.

一个有用的记忆口诀是 RED CAT(还原在阴极)和 AN OX(氧化在阳极)。

2. Electrolysis of Molten Ionic Compounds |

When a molten ionic compound is electrolysed using inert electrodes (e.g. graphite or platinum), it splits into its elements. The metal ion is always reduced at the cathode, and the non‑metal ion is oxidised at the anode.

Example: electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide (PbBr₂). At the cathode, Pb²⁺ ions gain two electrons to form liquid lead. At the anode, Br⁻ ions lose one electron each to form bromine gas.

Cathode: Pb²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Pb
Anode: 2Br⁻ → Br₂ + 2e⁻

r₂. This method can be used to extract reactive metals like aluminium from their compounds, as reduction with carbon would not work for very reactive metals.

3. Electrolysis of Aqueous Solutions – Discharge Rules |

In aqueous solutions, water molecules also dissociate to a small extent, producing H⁺ and OH⁻ ions. So the electrolyte contains ions from both the solute and water. The products at the electrodes depend on the relative reactivity and concentration of the ions.

At the cathode, if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen (e.g. K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al), hydrogen gas is produced because H⁺ ions are discharged in preference to the metal ions. If the metal is less reactive than hydrogen (e.g. Cu, Ag), the metal is deposited.

At the anode, the order of discharge for common anions is: halide ions (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻) > hydroxide ions (OH⁻) > all other common anions such as SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻. In a concentrated halide solution, the halogen is produced; in dilute solutions, oxygen is often produced from the discharge of OH⁻.

Example: electrolysis of dilute sodium chloride solution. Cathode: hydrogen gas (H₂) because Na is more reactive than H. Anode: oxygen gas (O₂) because SO₄²⁻ does not discharge, and OH⁻ is discharged in preference to other anions except halides.

Cathode: 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ → H₂
Anode: 4OH⁻ → O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻

4. Writing Half Equations |

A half equation shows the electron transfer at one electrode. It must be balanced in terms of atoms and charge. Start by writing the ion or molecule before and after the change, then add electrons to balance the charge.

For reduction at the cathode, electrons are added on the left side. For oxidation at the anode, electrons appear on the right side. When writing half equations in aqueous solutions, include H₂O, H⁺ or OH⁻ as needed to balance oxygen and hydrogen atoms.

Examples:

示例:

Reduction: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu
Oxidation: 2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻
Anode in water: 4OH⁻ → 2H₂O + O₂ + 4e⁻

Note that the number of electrons lost at the anode must equal the number gained at the cathode. This conserves charge overall.

5. Extraction of Aluminium |

Aluminium is extracted by electrolysis because it is too reactive to be reduced by carbon. The ore bauxite is purified to obtain aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), which has a very high melting point (over 2000 °C). To reduce energy costs, the aluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite (Na₃AlF₆), which lowers the operating temperature to about 950 °C.

The electrolysis cell has a steel case lined with graphite, which acts as the cathode. Large graphite blocks serve as the anodes. At the cathode, Al³⁺ ions are reduced to molten aluminium, which sinks to the bottom and is tapped off. At the anode, oxide ions (O²⁻) are oxidised to oxygen gas. The hot oxygen reacts with the carbon anodes, producing carbon dioxide and gradually burning them away, so the anodes must be replaced regularly.

Cathode: Al³⁺ + 3e⁻ → Al
Anode: 2O²⁻ → O₂ + 4e⁻
Overall: 2Al₂O₃ → 4Al + 3O₂

6. Purifying Copper by Electrolysis |

Copper can be purified using an electrolytic cell containing copper(II) sulfate solution as the electrolyte. The impure copper is made the anode, and a thin sheet of pure copper is used as the cathode.

During electrolysis, the anode dissolves: Cu atoms lose two electrons and enter the solution as Cu²⁺ ions. These ions migrate to the cathode, where they gain two electrons and deposit as pure copper. Impurities like silver and gold do not dissolve and fall to the bottom as 'anode sludge', while more reactive impurities such as iron dissolve but are not discharged at the cathode because they are more reactive than copper.

Anode: Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻
Cathode: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu

This process produces copper of high purity (about 99.99%), suitable for electrical wiring.

7. Electroplating | 电镀

Electroplating uses electrolysis to coat a thin layer of one metal onto the surface of another object. The object to be plated is made the cathode, and the plating metal is used as the anode. The electrolyte contains ions of the plating metal.

idise: Ag → Ag⁺ + e⁻. At the cathode, silver ions reduce and coat the fork: Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag.

Electroplating is used for decoration (jewellery), to improve resistance to corrosion (chromium plating), and to increase surface hardness.

8. Simple Chemical Cells (Galvanic Cells) |

A simple chemical cell consists of two different metals dipped in an electrolyte. Because the metals have different tendencies to lose electrons, a potential difference (voltage) is produced. The more reactive metal acts as the negative electrode (anode in a cell) and undergoes oxidation, releasing electrons that flow through the external circuit to the less reactive metal.

At the positive electrode (cathode in a cell), reduction takes place. If the electrolyte is simply a conducting solution, hydrogen ions are often reduced to hydrogen gas. The greater the difference in reactivity between the two metals, the larger the voltage produced.

This principle is used in batteries, where chemical energy is converted directly into electrical energy.

9. Hydrogen-Oxygen Fuel Cells |

Fuel cells generate electricity through the reaction of a fuel (such as hydrogen) with oxygen, without combustion. In a hydrogen‑oxygen alkaline fuel cell, hydrogen is fed to the negative electrode and oxygen to the positive electrode, with a potassium hydroxide electrolyte.

n is reduced: O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻. The overall reaction is 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. The only by‑product is water, so fuel cells are considered zero‑emission at the point of use.

Advantages of hydrogen fuel cells include higher efficiency than petrol engines, no greenhouse gas emissions (provided hydrogen is made from renewable sources), and quiet operation. Disadvantages include the challenges of storing and transporting hydrogen safely, and the current high cost of the technology.

10. Exam Tips and Common Mistakes |

Always check whether the electrolyte is molten or aqueous before predicting products. For molten compounds, it is straightforward; for aqueous solutions, you must consider the discharge of H⁺ and OH⁻ from water.

Be precise when using the terms 'electrode', 'cathode' and 'anode'. Remember that reduction always takes place at the cathode and oxidation at the anode, irrespective of the type of cell.

Do not confuse half equations for electrolysis in water with those for simple cells. In electrolysis, electrical energy forces non‑spontaneous reactions; in cells, spontaneous chemical reactions produce electrical energy.

is not enough to write O²⁻ → O₂; you must link it to the consumption of the carbon anode.

Finally, practice drawing and labelling electrolytic cells with the direction of electron flow (always from anode to cathode in the external circuit) and ion migration.
