📚 Salt Lake City: Nature, Culture and Commerce at the Crossroads of the West |

Sitting between a vast inland sea and a wall of snow-capped peaks, Salt Lake City is one of the most distinctive capitals in the United States. It is the capital of Utah, the state's largest city, and a place where dramatic geography, pioneer history, a thriving technology economy and a genuinely varied food scene sit within a few blocks of one another. Known for generations as the "Crossroads of the West," it works as a business hub, a cultural centre and an outdoor playground at the same time.

1. First Impressions: The Crossroads of the West |

Salt Lake City was founded on 24 July 1847 by Brigham Young and a group of pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who crossed the plains in search of a place where they could settle in peace. The city sits at roughly 1,288 metres (4,226 feet) above sea level on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, with the Wasatch Range rising immediately to the east. Its famous nickname, the "Crossroads of the West," comes from its role as a staging point for wagon trains, the Pony Express and the first transcontinental railroad, completed at nearby Promontory Summit in 1869. Today Interstate 15 and Interstate 80 still meet here, and the metropolitan area is home to around 1.2 million people. As host of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the city proved it could stage a world event with the mountains as a backdrop.

2. The Great Salt Lake: An Inland Sea of Salt |

The city takes its name from the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the United States and the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. Its defining feature is salinity. Because the lake has no outlet to the ocean, dissolved minerals carried in by rivers simply stay, and concentration varies with the water level, in some years reaching roughly 25 to 28 percent, several times saltier than seawater at about 3.5 percent. That extreme salinity produces strange beauty: white salt crystal formations along the shoreline and the famous buoyancy that lets visitors float on the surface with almost no effort. Few fish can survive, but brine shrimp and brine flies thrive, and they in turn feed millions of migratory birds that stop at the lake each year. Antelope Island, reached by a causeway, protects a herd of bison and offers some of the best sunset views in the state. Further west, the Bonneville Salt Flats have hosted land-speed record attempts for decades.

3. The Wasatch Mountains and World-Class Skiing |

The Wasatch Range gives Salt Lake City its dramatic skyline and its most famous recreation. This is where the marketing phrase "the Greatest Snow on Earth" was born: cold, dry, light powder that falls in enormous quantities, partly because moisture picked up over the Great Salt Lake is wrung out as snow as air rises over the mountains. The remarkable thing for visitors is proximity. Several major resorts lie within roughly 30 to 45 minutes of downtown, so you can ski in the morning and be at a concert or a restaurant in the city the same evening.

Summer does not end the story. The same canyons become hiking and mountain-biking routes, with wildflowers in July and the Alpine Loop scenic drive in autumn. Utah Olympic Park, built for the 2002 Games, still runs bobsled experiences and freestyle shows.

4. The Uinta Mountains: Camping and Wilderness |

East of the city, the Uinta Mountains offer a different kind of outdoor experience. This is the highest mountain range in the contiguous United States that runs east to west, and it contains Kings Peak, at about 4,123 metres (13,528 feet) the highest point in Utah. Much of the range is protected as the High Uintas Wilderness, a landscape of glacial lakes, pine forest and open alpine basins. For visitors, the practical appeal is camping: developed campgrounds along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway make it easy to pitch a tent, fish for trout and hike without technical skills. Nights are cold even in midsummer because of the altitude, so warm layers are essential.

5. National Parks and Natural Wonders Nearby |

Salt Lake City is an outstanding base for the national parks of the American Southwest. Of Utah's five national parks, often called the Mighty Five, Bryce Canyon National Park is the closest to the city, famous for its dense forest of orange hoodoos carved by frost and rain. The other parks, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef, are each within a manageable drive. The Navajo Nation's Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, sometimes referred to in older guides simply as "Navajo," lies further south and offers the classic desert buttes seen in countless films. Closer to home, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the Wasatch-Cache National Forest provide dramatic scenery with far fewer crowds.

6. Performing Arts: The Salt Lake Palace and Beyond |

Beyond natural beauty, Salt Lake City has a lively and surprisingly deep cultural life. The downtown Salt Lake Palace is a well-known performing arts centre, hosting concerts, opera and drama throughout the year, and it anchors a compact cultural district that visitors can walk in an evening. Nearby, Abravanel Hall is home to the Utah Symphony, while the historic Capitol Theatre stages productions by Utah Opera and Ballet West. The Eccles Theater, opened in 2016, brings major touring musicals and Broadway shows to the city, and Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus hosts lectures, dance and contemporary music. In Sandy, the Hale Centre Theatre is known for its technically ambitious in-the-round staging. Not to be missed is the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, whose free rehearsals and broadcasts have drawn visitors for generations.
