1. States of Matter and the Particle Model | 物质的状态与粒子模型
All matter is made up of tiny particles. The three common states are solid, liquid and gas. In solids, particles are held tightly together in a fixed arrangement and can only vibrate. In liquids, particles are close together but can move around each other. In gases, particles are far apart and move quickly in all directions. Changes of state, such as melting, boiling and condensing, occur when energy is added or removed, but the particles themselves do not change.
所有物质都由微小粒子构成。常见的三种状态是固体、液体和气体。在固体中,粒子被紧锁在固定位置,只能振动。在液体中,粒子彼此靠近但能相互滑动。在气体中,粒子距离很远并朝各个方向快速运动。物态变化(如熔化、沸腾和冷凝)是在添加或移除能量时发生的,但粒子本身没有变化。
2. Atoms, Elements and the Periodic Table | 原子、元素和周期表
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. All substances are made of atoms. An element is a substance made of only one type of atom; for example, oxygen (O), carbon (C) and iron (Fe) are elements. The periodic table lists all known elements in order of increasing atomic number and groups them by similar properties. Vertical columns are called groups, and horizontal rows are called periods. Metals are found on the left and in the centre, while non-metals are on the right.
原子是元素能够存在的最小微粒。所有物质都由原子构成。元素是仅由一种原子组成的物质;例如,氧(O)、碳(C)和铁(Fe)都是元素。周期表将所有已知元素按原子序数递增的顺序排列,并根据相似性质分组。竖列称为族,横行称为周期。金属位于左侧和中部,而非金属位于右侧。
3. Compounds and Mixtures | 化合物和混合物
Compounds are substances formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in fixed proportions. For example, water (H₂O) is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen. Compounds have properties different from the elements they contain. Mixtures are made of two or more substances that are not chemically joined and can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography. Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen.
化合物是由两种或多种不同元素以固定比例化学结合而形成的物质。例如,水(H₂O)是由氢和氧组成的化合物。化合物的性质与其所含元素不同。混合物由两种或多种未发生化学结合的物质组成,可通过物理方法(如过滤、蒸馏或色谱法)分离。空气是气体的混合物,主要包含氮气和氧气。
4. Chemical Formulas and Equations | 化学式和方程式
A chemical formula uses symbols and numbers to show the types and ratios of atoms in a substance. For example, CO₂ represents one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms. A word equation gives the names of reactants and products, while a symbol equation uses chemical formulas and shows the relative amounts. For instance, the reaction of methane burning can be written as CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O.
化学式使用符号和数字来表示物质中原子的种类和数量比。例如,CO₂ 表示一个碳原子与两个氧原子结合。文字方程式给出反应物和产物的名称,而符号方程式使用化学式并显示相对数量。例如,甲烷燃烧的反应方程式为 CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O。
5. Acids and Alkalis | 酸和碱
Acids have a sour taste and a pH less than 7. Common acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and citric acid. Alkalis are soluble bases with a pH greater than 7; examples are sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Neutralisation occurs when an acid reacts with an alkali to form a salt and water. For example: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O.
酸有酸味,pH值小于7。常见的酸包括盐酸(HCl)、硫酸(H₂SO₄)和柠檬酸。碱是可溶性的碱,pH值大于7;例如氢氧化钠(NaOH)和氢氧化钾(KOH)。pH标度用于衡量溶液的酸碱性。当酸与碱反应生成盐和水时,发生中和反应。例如:HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O。
6. Types of Chemical Reactions | 化学反应的类型
Chemical reactions can be classified into several types. Combustion is a reaction with oxygen that releases energy, often producing heat and light. For example, magnesium burning in air forms magnesium oxide: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. Thermal decomposition occurs when a compound breaks down into simpler substances on heating; calcium carbonate decomposes to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂. Displacement reactions involve a more reactive element pushing out a less reactive one from its compound, such as zinc displacing copper from copper sulfate: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu. Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt and water.
7. The Reactivity Series and Metals | 反应性序列与金属
The reactivity series lists metals in order of how vigorously they react. Potassium, sodium and calcium are very reactive; magnesium, aluminium and zinc are moderately reactive; iron and lead are less reactive; and copper, silver and gold are very unreactive. Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides, and with acids to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. The more reactive a metal, the faster and more vigorous the reaction. For example, magnesium reacts fairly quickly with dilute hydrochloric acid: Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂. Extraction methods depend on reactivity: metals above carbon in the series must be extracted using electrolysis, while those below can be extracted by reduction with carbon.
8. Earth Science: Rocks, Atmosphere and Cycles | 地球科学:岩石、大气与循环
The Earth's structure includes the crust, mantle and core. Rocks are classified into three main types: igneous, formed from cooled magma or lava; sedimentary, made from compressed layers of sediment; and metamorphic, formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure. The rock cycle shows how rocks are constantly recycled. The atmosphere is composed mainly of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%), with small amounts of carbon dioxide, water vapour and noble gases. The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves through the environment via processes like photosynthesis, respiration, combustion and decomposition.
